Obviously, these are subject to lots of alterations, especially once Terrelle Pryor makes his decision. There are still kids out there who haven’t signed and might still make moves up and down the rankings. Even for Pitt as players like DeVoe Torrence and Dominick Britt are still out there.

Brief aside. Pryor is not going to Pitt. I wish otherwise, but I’m not going to rip on a high school kid simply because he won’t go to my school (until it becomes time for my kids to pick a college). I also think there is no reason for any kid to sign his NLI on the very first day. With a talent like Pryor, why should he sign at all? Think any school would stand on some principle if he told them, “Yes I’m coming but I won’t sign the NLI.” Hell, no. They’d hold the scholarship regardless.

It sounded good when Pryor told everyone at his high school and ESPN-U that he was waiting to take more time. Saying that he just hasn’t had the time to digest everything from all the schools with his HS work, the football and now basketball season. Sounded very mature, and everyone praised the maturity. Dismissing out of hand any thought that he was doing this to keep the attention on him. That said, isn’t it a little remarkable that he didn’t have time for really considering all of the schools, but has had no problem with every interview. Every publicity moment? Every extra appearance? Showing up on TV to say he hadn’t made up his mind? I mean, don’t you have to wonder a little if it isn’t a bit about milking extra attention?

Moving on.

The defections of A.J. Alexander and Zack Stoudt knocked Pitt out of the top-20 recruiting class in the major recruiting rankings.

Rivals.com has Pitt the lowest at #29

Scout.com puts Pitt at #25

ESPN/Scouts, Inc. the highest with #21

Good for Pitt, and bad for the Big East as a whole, though, that Pitt is the highest ranked Big East team in all of the national rankings:

Team —— Scout.com —– Rivals.com

WVU ——— 37 —————- 44
Rutgers ——– 44 ————– 46

USF ———- 46 ————— 56
Louisville —— 54 ————— 55
Syracuse —— 49 ————- 48
Cinci ———- 55 ————– 68
UConn ——– 70 ————– 72

ESPN.com only goes top-25.

USF and Cinci have the widest disparity in the rankings. Louisville is clearly the most disappointing. Arguably, UConn could be considered more disappointing, but recruiting for football in their geographic base is much like Pitt recruiting basketball in Western PA.

Syracuse, all things considered, didn’t do too badly. WVU could be considered a disappointment, given their season, but all the crap that happened after the Backyard Brawl makes it somewhat stunning how well they recovered.

Didn’t I see that Louisville brought in alot of highly regarded JUCOs………..?? Of course their NLI ranking would look poor………. since JUCOs aren’t ranked with High School signups……..

Comment by mtoolmn 02.06.08 @ 10:37 pm

Louisville did indeed bring in 9, yes, 9 JUCO players. Kragthorpe clearly feels the heat. That’s a huge chance to try and get 9 two-year players ready and up to speed in time. The reason JUCO players are not ranked as high is because there’s a lot of questionmarks as to their actual talent level given the competition they face.

So, do we still have the single best win of the year in bball? What else compares to giving the number 2 team its only loss (neutral, not at home like the ksu over kansas loss)?

Comment by Stuart 02.06.08 @ 11:12 pm

Another great recruiting class! Its only a matter of time now…

Duke destroying Carolina tonight @ Carolina has to be a big help to PITT. I dunno if our win over DUKE is the “best” win. But it’s certainly at least honorable mention! Must win game tomorrow vs the hoopies in the hardcourt addition of the BYB. Ill be doing my best to contribute to the home court advantage in the ZOO!! Hail to PITT!

Comment by Matt D 02.06.08 @ 11:37 pm

Think of where we’d be right now if we didn’t lose our only 2 returning starters…

We favored by 3 tomorrow…

BTW – Gray scored 14 for the Bulls in 18 min on Monday. They got former NBAer Mike Brown as a “Big man” coach for the bulls about a week ago to coach him and noah up…

‘”This actually gives me a really good opportunity to do some bonding with these young guys, because I have a lot of free time,” Brown said. “So if guys want to get into the gym at 8 o’clock at night, they can say, ‘Hey coach, let’s go shoot.’

“Or if they want to hit the weight room at 4 in the afternoon or maybe go get some dinner or grab a movie, it’s an opportune time for me to do some real good bonding with these guys and try to instill some different work habits for them.”

Will it help?

Well, in Monday’s 118-108 victory over Seattle, Gray tied his season-high with 14 points and the Bulls outrebounded the Sonics 50-35. So no one can say Brown has done a bad job after three days with the team.

“If he’s paying, I’ll go to dinner with him every night,” Gray said. “It’s great to have him around. Our post play has progressively gotten better this year, but I think it’s going to improve even more.”‘

CSTV has Pitt as the #19 in their recruting rankings done by Tom Lemming.

Britt signed with Jackson State and Torrence is being accused of rape so Wanny wont take him.

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 02.07.08 @ 9:00 am

I didn’t rip on the kid yesterday because he’s not going to Pitt. If someone doesn’t pick my alma mater, that’s fine, I’m not going to hate the guy.

The reason I felt it appropriate to question the kid’s sexuality yesterday was that a) these schools have been recruiting him for the last year and a half, maybe two years. What good’s a couple more weeks going to do him now? And b)his finalists are PSU, OSU, and Michigan. Is there really a dime’s worth of difference between any of these three schools, other than maybe that OSU is located in a mid-sized city while PSU is in in the middle of nowhere?

Seriously, you’re picking a college, not a religion. It’s not that difficult a choice, and anyway, it’s not entirely that important, anyway.

The kid needs to make up his mind already so we don’t have to hear about him anymore.

Comment by Jeff 02.07.08 @ 9:32 am

Kevin Gorman of the Trib said last night that Lucas Nix has some academic issues he needs to deal with. Has anyone heard anything about this?

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 02.07.08 @ 10:42 am

Did someone mention basketball??? I think there is an important game comin up. That’s the best part of having an instate school that has a Football and Basketball team that are now competitive and very enjoyable to watch. Touche’ PSU……..

Comment by Ironhead 02.07.08 @ 11:34 am

Jeff:
It is his life and he can take as long as he wants. It is not his fault you have no life and nothing better to do than worry about where he is going to school. You give people a reason to call Pitt fans classless. Also, I would question the sexuality of someone so concerned about an 18 year old kid.

Comment by Julius Dawkins 02.07.08 @ 11:36 am

The reason we are 25th on Scout is because we only signed 19 players… if you sort by “quality” of recruit (# of stars) we move up to 13th.

I think the scholarship opened by Stoudt should be offered to Kevin Hart. He fills the need at O-line, and can contribute immediately.

Comment by Maz 02.07.08 @ 12:57 pm

Funny Maz. Giving that kid a scholarship will fill nothing more than his need to fit in.

I’m so glad that recruiting is over – it’s 1 day of fun stretched 260 days thin.

I don’t know about anybody else, but i come to this site exclusively for the sexuality comments.

Comment by ChrisA 02.07.08 @ 1:06 pm

Julius,

I’m not “worried” about where the kid is going to school. On the contrary, I don’t really care at this point and I just want him to shut up and go away.

On the other hand, one might wonder why you’re so concerned about sticking up for an 18 year old kid? Gay much?

I kid, I kid.

Comment by Jeff 02.07.08 @ 1:27 pm

Where did AJ Alexander end up? I still haven’t seen that yet.

Comment by Patrick 02.07.08 @ 2:07 pm

Great, so now we can determine one’s sexual orientation based on one’s position regarding Pryor… I knew one’s fandom of Notre Dame was a reliable indicator of sexual preference, but an 18 year old from frickin’ Jeannette, c’mon???

Comment by Greg in Columbia 02.07.08 @ 2:09 pm

Alexander signed with Florida State. No word on his sexual orientation.

Comment by Maz 02.07.08 @ 2:32 pm

Rivals should include that in their coverage.

Comment by Greg in Columbia 02.07.08 @ 2:33 pm

I’d also like to point out the absurdity of linking attention-seeking to sexuality. Narcissism is a sexuality-neutral trait. Being obsessed with attention, one’s self, etc. is fairly common…I can think of some extremely prominent athletes, movie stars, and politicians that I’d count in that group. Let’s not pretend their obsession tells us anything about their sexuality.

Also, if you disagree with me you’re gay.

Comment by Maz 02.07.08 @ 2:35 pm

Do you think its a coincidence that the other main recruiting site is scOUT.com? Obviously its a big homo index.

Comment by Maz 02.07.08 @ 2:36 pm

Maz i think you are on to something. Have you seen the pictures on scOUT.com…half naked…sweaty…clearly a big homo index.

[…] National Letter of Intent Day has passed, and our Pitt Panthers finished with the best recruiting class in the Big East for the third straight year.  This class has been ranked anywhere between 19-29 depending on the myriad different recruiting outlets you listen to.  I have seen reports that finagle the numbers to get Pitt all the way to number 13.  (Pitt Blather has several posts and extensive coverage, as well as lengthy comment threads on this.  See: Snap Football Rankings, The Official Word on the ‘08 Recruiting Class, and NLI ‘08: Open Thread for their coverage.) We lost another assistant today. Partridge is going to Wisconsin.

[…] Apparently Rivals.com — despite putting Pitt at #28 in the national recruiting rankings, which is actually a place higher than right after signing day — likes Pitt’s recruiters. Greg Gattuso was named Big East recruiter of the year and Matt Cavanaugh made the list of top Big East recruiters. Rivals.com highlighted an assistant coach for their recruiting prowess from seven conferences, including each of the six BCS leagues. Gattuso was lauded by the website for “(pulling) off a huge upset when he reeled in cousins Cameron Saddler and Shayne Hale from Gateway.” […]
