Stoudt Is Out

Zack Stoudt previously verballed to Pitt, but is backing out and will sign a letter of intent tomorrow and play for Louisville. [NLI day is tomorrow?!? Whoa, the Terrelle Pryor mania and hype could be over after tomorrow. Unless he somehow decides to come to Pitt…]

As of now, we’re still bringing in two QB’s for the class of 2008. Greg Cross is already enrolled after transferring from JuCo and Central Catholic’s Tino Sunseri decided a few months ago to switch his verbal from the very same Louisville team to stay closer to home. The quarterback race this season is going to get very interesting. It looks as if we’ll have 4 QB’s competing in camp — Stull, Smith, Bostick, and Cross — with Sunseri likely getting the redshirt fairly quickly.

Smith needs to find another position to play because he is not

competive at qb, maybe lb or te.

Probably the right move for him. The QB position was starting to look awful crowded.

Comment by Jeff 02.05.08 @ 7:04 pm

Yeah, I don’t blame him. It sucks that he is going to Louisville but it could turn out to be a good move for him.

Comment by Panthoor 02.05.08 @ 7:22 pm

Louisville is a good opportunity for him, he would never see playing time at Pitt.

Stoudt only started 1 yr in HS. The only thing he has over tino is the measurables. UL prioritized tino over stoudt, so that speaks to how coaches view these prospects. Maybe Dave can use this spot to address a position of need (like OL, LB).

I’m going to make a wild prediction here.

Kevan Smith WILL

not be our starting QB next year.

Call me crazy but I thought Smith looked a lot better in the Rutgers game then he did in the beginning of the year. His drop backs looked smooth and quick and he looked more confident.

If he didn’t hurt his shoulder in that game I think he plays well enough for Pitt to win.

I wouldn’t count him out just yet. He is a phenomenal athlete and was incredibly raw at the QB position last year.

I think he could surprise some people.

Agree with Jon…Smith may not be the starting QB next year, but considering how he got flustered at MSU and his subsequent recovery at Rutgers, I’d say he could be in the mix in the future.

Jon, good points and a lot can happen to a college player in the offseason to improve in all phases of the game. That’s why they came up with the concept of “redshirting”. Don’t rule anyone out. That will happen on the field in the Spring. We’ll see. i’m just glad we will have some excellent options and competition. Of course, when Pryor signs tomorrow, all bets are off.

Comment by TigerPaul (aka Jon Pryor ) 02.05.08 @ 9:14 pm

Smith just looked rattled too many times last year. He seems to have some talent, but I seriously have to wonder whether he’s got the poise and mental stamina to be a college quarterback.

Forget Pryor get jenkins

[…] Pitt took Tino Sunseri from Louisville, so naturally Louisville takes Zack Stoudt from Pitt. Can’t say I have strong feelings one way or the other. […]

Did you guys really watch the Zack Stoudt video? This kid is going to be a really good college QB. I would have played him over Bostic this year, and he’s only in high school. Stoudt appears to have a strong arm, very good throwing mechanics, good physical size, and decent mobility. His dad did a good job of teaching him the QB position. Of all the QB’s I feared would decommit, Stoudt was the one I hated to see go. Sometimes we PA guys get to hung up on our local players. Keep in mind, Ohio regularly turns out quality players, and Stoudt may be the best QB in Ohio this year. In my opinion, this is a major loss for Pitt, because I believe Stoudt was our QB of the future. I am aware this is open for debate, but I believe more attention should have been given to a kid like Stoudt than dreaming we were going to get the golden boy “Pryor”. Now we have neither!! Watch for the development of Stoudt in the future compared to Sunseri. My bucks are on Stoudt to be the better of the two. This should get a rise out of all the local Sunseri supporters, but this is only an opinion, not a slam on Tino. Being a Pitt fan, I hope Sunseri proves me wrong and leads Pitt to a national championship.

LTL – you said “I am aware this is open for debate, but I believe more attention should have been given to a kid like Stoudt than dreaming we were going to get the golden boy “Pryor”.”

I wonder if you are confusing what is written on blogs and message boards with what actually id done behind the scenes by the coaching staff.

Just how much more could the staff have done for Stoudt? They wooed him into coming to PITT, but do you think they should have then just dropped all contact with the nation’s #1 recruit who lives in the city? That is unreasonable and would have been pretty stupid – as it would have sent a message to every kid on the team that DW wasn’t committed to trying for the best players possible. So how much ‘more attention’ does a coaching staff with 85+ kids on the roster give to a middling recruit that hasn’t signed an LOI yet? Kiss his feet? Pat him on the back and lie to him? He’s 18 years old and obviously conflicted with all that’s going on, but you don’t stake your team’s future on one kid (just ask RR if Pryor signs with OSU how that tactic worked out).

Stoudt has come out and said that he felt slighted because supposedly the staff told him he’d be the only QB taken this year, and then they went out and accepted both Cross and Sunseri’s verbals. Sorry, but if Stoudt actually believes that DW would bank his QB future on Stoudt’s ego after the debacle we experienced at QB last season then Stoudt is a bigger prima donna then imaginable. Goodby and good luck to him – I’d have liked to see him stay but there is something fishy about how Stoudt acted over the last month.

I think Stoudt would have had his problems playing in Pittsburgh. I was at that Maulers game when Three Rivers went nuts on his dad. I mean … when I see a QB play bad, I still say “he pulled a Stoudt.”
