The SEC/Big East half-hearted invitational has announced the locations, teams and dates for next December’s games. Pitt doesn’t play in them. USF-Vandy and Marquette-Tennessee in Nashville on December 16. Mississippi St.-Cinci and Ole Miss-Louisville Cinci in Cincinnati on December 18. As usual, the Big East ducks the fun game by not having Ole Miss — who is coached by Andy Kennedy who was interim coach at Cinci after Huggs was fired — play Cinci.

What a joke this thing is. 4 teams per year. Lame.

UConn will be without starting guard Jerome Dyson for the month of February with an automatic 30 day suspension for failing his second drug test. Doug Wiggins, surprisingly, passed his drug test and will probably play against Pitt on Saturday.

Some esoteric stats based only on conference games. Pitt has the 3d slowest tempo in the Big East. Pitt is also tied for most efficient team on offense.

Pat Forde at ESPN.com argues that the Big East in basketball is a lot like the SEC in football. A brutal guantlet without real soft areas.

Even the team that has established itself alone in first place is hardly bulletproof. Georgetown is 6-1 in Big East play, but half of those wins are by a total of six points and required an extraordinary escape. Against Connecticut, the Hoyas needed a 3-pointer by 7-foot-2 Roy Hibbert with six seconds left to win by three. Against Syracuse, a Jonny Flynn 3 just lipped out at the buzzer of overtime. And Saturday against West Virginia, the Hoyas needed a Patrick Ewing Jr. shot block at the rim at the buzzer to win by one.

“They’re winning, and that experience of winning close games has got to help them,” Crean said. “But the games have been so close, it’s going to give everyone else confidence they can beat them.”

Between the top and bottom, there are 11 teams with either three or four league losses.

“It’s going to be a jumbled mess at the end in the middle,” Cronin said. “But there are a lot of teams good enough to go in [the NCAA Tournament] — maybe 12. The question is whether we’ll ever get nine or 10 in.”

I hate the conference supremacy arguments. It is silly and only based on fans who want to make themselves feel better about their team or justify something. It does make for fun bar arguments, though, living here in Ohio.

You have Cincy playing twice, is that correct?

Louisville is the 4th team

Every game is a war in the big east!

If you don’t play hard or if you have an off night any team is capable of beating the other.

Look at what Rutgers did to Pitt and what UC did to WVU. Pitt is hanging in there, they have to focus and hopefully Fields will return in 2 weeks to give them a big boost!

Based on John Hollinger’s statistical model for NBA prospects on ESPN, it looks like DeJuan Blair may have a legit chance at making it to the next level. He is the 11th best prospect on the list. Here is the insider link: link to insider.espn.go.com

“Let’s start with DeJuan Blair, who is at least something of a prospect — Chad Ford’s big board has him at No. 91 right now. He is an undersized power forward in the Jason Maxiell mold, with an insane rebound rate (nearly one every two minutes) and a great nose for the ball (1.9 steals per game). Even with a ding for being an undersized 4, his numbers are eye-grabbers. But he is only 6-7 and he plays inside, so you can understand why NBA teams are skittish.”

Just moved back to Pittsburgh. I wanted to get season tickets to the football and basketball teams. Does anybody know what the waiting list is for BBall. Also, what would be good seats at Fball.

Thanks

There is no “waiting list” for basketball. They seat by “points” you get for donations. And if you donate $300, you’re pretty much guaranteed 2 seats on the second level – i’ve never heard of someone donating and being left out. If you donate ~ $7500, i’m willing to bet you’ll end up with enough points to end up on the first level with 2 seats. ($50 = one point). Either case a pair of tickets are another $700 you have to pay on top of the donation no matter where your seats are.

Football – uh, i think you can get those for 15 bubble gum wrappers and $4.50 shipping and handling. I’m sure they’ll be able to find you seats somewhere…

Thanks..

I sent in for info on the Football season. Are the tickets available now. Round about, what does two seats for a season go for at Heinz

You can get 2 seats in the lower level near an end zone for either $200 total or $200 each I think. Even if I’m wrong, they’re not too expensive and they’re easily worth it, especially with WVU coming to town this year. The other games are Iowa, Buffalo, Bowling Green, Rutgers and Louisville.

If you donate over $2000 per year you can get great seats at the Pete or Heinz.

“If you donate over $2000 per year you can get great seats at the Pete or Heinz.”

At the Pete? What do you consider great? Behind the baskets?

If you donated 2k per year for SEVERAL years, you might eventually be eligible for “great” seats…

Football tickets aren’t available yet. You have to donate by March 15th for football tickets, and June 30th for basketball tickets, and then in the summer they send something out for football tickets, and late summer for basketball tickets.

Here’s the “panther club” application you need:

It kind of explains what you get for what donation. Its totally vague on football tickets though – i have no idea how those work. So few people go though, i wouldn’t worry much about it.

This is the best i could find for football:

If you have any more questions, just ask…for reference, I have 174 points, and my bball seats are in 115, about 2/3rds of the way back…

…and if you send in that panther club application, could you put me down as the “Referred to by:”? Just write in “PCID# 96377” – thanks.

If you were just concerned about football, most of the sections don’t require donations at all. the 3 sections at the 1xx level, flanking the 50 on each side require $50 to $100 donations per seat for season tix (beyond the prices of the tix, which aren’t much). Club Seats (2xx level) more so, but not exactly sure how much more (I think as much as $1000). But most other levels, including the other 100 levels, not at all. You can get some really decent seats for very little (per game). And as Stuart says, to be brutally honest, for just about ANY game, if you aren’t particular you could walk through the lots a few minutes prior to game time and literally find folks giving extras away. My crew ALWAYS has at least one we give away or eat each week. But again, you need to donate much more substantially to get a chance at hoops tickets.

Stuart I have been donating 2k or more every year since 1980, that might even be a longer time span than your age. I have very good seats at the pete, not under the basket and excellent football tickets.

Comment by Brass Villenheuva aka The Devil 02.02.08 @ 11:19 am

Uhhh…that’s what i said…telling someone new to donate 2k isn’t going to get him “good seats” at the pete next year. I said if its over many years, then, yes, you’ll have good seats….not sure how that helps the guys asking questions above…
