Farewell Rhoads

You know, when this AP story on how the Pitt win over WVU has produced such huge dividends, it was even before Paul Rhoads was able to ride finally getting a handle on the WVU spread to jump for the Auburn Defensive Coordinator gig. Words can’t adequately express how happy that Rhoads has finally moved on.

I didn’t think it would happen. I now have such optimism for 2008, that I am a little stunned. I do get a kick out of how he got characterized as an “excellent recruiter.” There’s little evidence of that. The talent on the defense started sliding after he got there, it has only rebounded since Wannstedt and Gattuso came to Pitt and started recruiting. As much blame as Walt Harris gets for letting the recruiting slip, after a good few years, there has been little evidence to suggest that Rhoads did much to help.
Consider, the areas Coach Wannstedt most wanted recruited were Western Pennsylvania and the rest of the state. Ohio was where Rhoads was assigned geographically. He had him recruit the area, of least concern and lowest expectations. That seems telling.

The good news for Auburn is that they have a good recruiter and coach in Tuberville. And Tuberville is a defensive guy.

See you in hell, Rhoads. Goodbye and good riddance.

Woot! There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Hail to PITT!

You are all idiots, this just set us back another 2 years. Rhodes is a good coach. Let’s see who he hires before you celebrate. Hopefully we won’t lose any recruits over this.

Comment by Dave 01.17.08 @ 10:10 am

Dave… You are crazy dude. I would say Gattuso is a great coach and Ball was a good coach. Rhoads was a very mediocre coach. He had some of the worst defenses imaginable and some good ones while he was there. More bad than good. This is one of those it doesnt phase me kind of things. No recruits are going to be affected because rhoads was a bad recruiter and only Kevin Harper was recruited by him.
Whoever Pitt hires will most likely be better than Rhoads was. Most Pitt fans are hoping for Sal Sunseri or Tim Lewis. Idk if they are realistic, but either would be far far better than Rhoads. Sal Sunseri is a hell of a recruiter too

Rhoads is a good coach and Wanny kept him around for continuity. Hopefully we can parlay his departure into a great coach. There’s never a good time to absorb a change like this but I doubt it’s going to set us back two years…

OL coach might just be our own Bill Chirpak per a credible source. He’s trying to decide whether he wants the gig or not.

YES!!!!!!!! its a great morning. name me one good thing rhoades has done outside of pitt’s last 4 games (when it was rumored that wanny had full control of the defense). theres no evidence hes even a good recruiter. i wish him well in auburn, but I’m THRILLED that hes gone.

The rest of the SEC is going to love this hire. Cutting loose Rhodes like this couldn’t have worked out better for us, just awesome news!

Comment by Greg in Columbia 01.17.08 @ 10:43 am

I think Tony Wise is still the guy from everyone i have talked to
I forgot to write this, but i would not have a problem with Gattuso as dc. He was the genius behind our defense anyways. Rhoads was a very very mediocre coach. I think it is definitely time for change

Comment by Adam 01.17.08 @ 10:45 am

I think this is good news for Pitt as well. First, the SEC is superior to the BE. That means that Rhoads leaving to take the same job at Auburn is a step up. I’m always happy to see our coaches step up. UCLA > Pitt in terms of jobs for a college basketball coach. Akron HC > Pitt OC. Auburn DC > Pitt DC. This is good for the program.

Also, Rhoads is a guy who a lot of people thought would get tossed under the bus after the Virginia, Navy and UConn juggernauts scored 40+, and to be fair, turnovers played a big part in those scores. But Rhoads could very easily have been fired several times in the past few years (like pre-2007, when we were one of the worst tackling teams in the country for six years in a row). To go from possibly getting fired to getting a better job is a welcomed change. I have never heard a single recruit credit Paul Rhoads for selling them on Pitt, and I think that whatever he was, good or bad as a DC, he wasn’t a recruiter. Good luck to Coach Rhoads, I’m glad we’re waving goodbye to him under these circumstances rather than trying to blame him for some or another disappointment.

I don’t mind Rhodes leaving, just was hoping for this news on Feb 7th.

THIS WILL MEAN ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO RECRUITING.
His only land is kevin harper the kicker who will play under partridge anyways.

Comment by Adam 01.17.08 @ 11:29 am

Here is what I think happened: Based upon the fact that Rhodes recruited only one player this year, I believe DW advised Rhodes to look for work elsewhere. He probalbly saved his job for one more year with the win at WVU, but I don’t think that Rhodes was in the long term plans. I wish him luck. There is no way this “sets us back” at all. Assistant coaches come and go all the time. He is not leaving on bad terms, so his players will be happy for him. I’m sure DW will bring in, or promote, a well qualified candidate.

Comment by HbgFrank 01.17.08 @ 12:27 pm

I wasn’t saying that he was presonally responsible for any one recruit, but it’s still another shake-up on defense. I’m even more concerned about Coach Ball’s departure. I really like how the class is shaping up, that’s all. I am confident that Wannstedt will find a great DC.

Comment by Joey T 01.17.08 @ 12:39 pm

I read with interest the comments by Wanny over losing Rhoades…..nice, general…positive stuff…however, I found it curious that he did not mention the defense he “put up” in the Backyard Brawl, which leaves me to believe that Wanny was the main ingredient in that scheme, and not Rhoades….any thoughts?

Comment by Ernie, "The Bear" 01.18.08 @ 10:57 am

Sorry for the absence, I was out of the country. First, a note to Rhoads: goodbye and good riddance. Now, a note to Wannschmuck: you’re lucky he left, because you are WAY too loyal to sucky coaches. Now I know that Cavanaugh isn’t going to leave Pitt until Wannschmuck leaves Pitt (which, thanks to WVU choking, has been put off for 3 seasons), so the offense will continue to be the same stilted self as Wannschmuck attempts to push the Ricky Williams offense at Pitt. How long until we hear stories of Shady doing pot and going into Ayurveda medicine?

Finally, Tony Wise? Don’t make me laugh. He was an awful OLine coach with the Dolphins under, you guessed it, Dumbsh!t. He was one of the main reasons why any time the Fins had a pocket passer in at QB (as opposed to Jay Fiedler), defenses went blitz-happy.
