This Year’s Verbal Day

The big HS All-Star game is as much about some top players having a bigger stage to announce their verbals. A little extra publicity, and maybe drama. That is unless the news hasn’t been steadily leaked for a while.

The big thing Pitt can expect from the US Army All-American Bowl is that Shayne Hale will make his decision known. And that Pitt will be the hat he puts on. Even the Virginia papers are acknowledging this.

Several other highly touted players will be making college decisions Saturday in San Antonio. Shayne Hale, a 6-3, 235-pound defensive from Gateway High in Monroeville, Pa., will decide between Virginia, Ohio State and Pittsburgh. He is expected to choose Pittsburgh.

My only promise if the announcement comes is that I will avoid the obvious post headline of “Hale to Pitt.”

The big question mark and potentially huge coup, though, would be if OG Josh Jenkins from Parkersburg, WV were to select Pitt.

Jenkins, who led Parkersburg to back-to-back state titles, said Pitt entered the picture mainly because it’s close to home. He will visit Pitt on Jan. 18 and he said it would take an exceptional visit to sway him toward the Panthers.

“It’s going to have to blow me away probably, so it’ll be interesting if they do,” he said.

Unfortunately, Pitt basketball will be at Cinci on the 19th, so no Oakland Zoo treatment to help the case. I wouldn’t be surprised with the hiring of Bill Stewart by WVU, if it doesn’t swing him back to the Mountaineers.

The game is on at 2 pm tomorrow on ABC (whoops, mistake made) 1 pm on NBC. There’s an Under Armour All-star HS game on ABC at 2pm.

The US Army AA game is on NBC at 1pm. THe PG is incorrect in their reporting. The ESPN all-start game is at 2pm on ABC.

Ooops. Thanks. Correction made.

Good article at SI.com on greatest players in college football history at each jersey number. PITT guys (Marino, then Dorsett & Green) are the lead-in for the list:

Scout.com is reporting that 3-star TE Mike Cruz has (again) committed to PITT:

Badly needed for depth at the TE position

Rivals reported as well on the Cruz committment

Anyone have an idea of where we are at as far as the number of scholarships remaining? I know there’s been much talk about this, but is it reasonable to believe we may not have open scholarships for good recruits going forward?

Comment by JohnFromDC 01.04.08 @ 10:56 am

just eyeballing it- we lost ~28 players this year and have ~15 commitments.

nm just realized when i added up the seniors i didn’t consider whether they were scholarship player or not

According to another site, Holley and Hale have committed as well.

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 01.04.08 @ 12:00 pm

psi is saying that holley has committed and hale is tomorrow. I heard holley did it over the radio. nothing is credible yet though. i know alot of people dont think we have a shot at jenkins, but i think pitt will make a good run and will eventually be in his final two or three with a decent shot at landing him. If you read his answers to fan questions at the all-american game you might get the same feeling.
I would say ohio state is first but they have alot of talent and he is a little worried about that
Pitt and WVU second- but he wants to be in the nfl and doesnt think wvu’s offense puts guys in the league
fsu- will be a long shot, because he wants to be close to home

Well if he’s worried about getting early playing time and getting in the NFL, Pitt is probably his best choice- in my 100% completely biased opinion.
Imagine Pinkston, Jacobson, Jenkins and Nix in a couple years… GEEEEEESH

Do you have the link for PSI?

Pinkston, Jacobson, Jenkins & Nix…with McCoy in the backfield. WOW! I would be ecstatic if Jenkins committed to Pitt, but I have to put those odds around 20%. (Ohio State probably at 50%, WVU at 30%) Those West Virginians are crazy, WVU is the world to them. I think he’d have a hard time committing to the “enemy” when he has offers from WVU and the potential national champion. But…if he does, our offensive line will be unbelievable in a year or two.
