Like it or not, the whole conference supremacy crap that goes on forces us to pull for teams that at times we wouldn’t cross the street to spit on them.
Having said that, West Virginia absolutely humiliated the Oklahoma Sooners with a 20 point win, 48-28. I admit it. I was cheering for them. If for no other reason, then the whole Big East bashing crap goes away for another year.
Everyone was picking against them — for good reason.
The only downside, and I heard it near the end of the game, the excuse/revisionist history will be that Pitt beat WVU because Pat White got hurt early in the game. White wasn’t playing well when he got hurt.
Seeing Owen Schmitt break down on national TV actually moved me. Well, except for the whole, “I love this state,” part
Hail to Pitt!
I hate WVU, obviously.
But I couldn’t help but feel bad for their players that were abandonned by DickRod and be happy for them when they prevailed in the end.
And the Owen Schmitt thing after the game was, I admit, moving.
So for one night, congratulations WVU.
….and White or no White, WVU wasn’t the better team in the Brawl (White played more than half that game and didn’t do jack squat BTW).
I’m glad they won too (i knew they’d roll up half a hundred – you just don’t stop that crap the first time you see it) – i’m just glad the win didn’t come in the NC game. Now we can give a big FU to all the big “least” bashers out there. OU was supposed to be some amazing juggernaut. Not so much.
Now i just need LSU to walk all over the pig eleven and my season will be set.
BTW – I was talking with a graduate assistant today and he told me that there have not been any staff changes and he doesn’t think there will be either, unless someone gets a better job in a different program. But he didn’t think Dunn or anyone else was going to go…take it for whats it worth…
I pull for every Big East team this time of the year.
Right now the we’re 2-2 in Bowls:
Cinci and WVU winning in convincing fashion, while UCONN and South Florida both got beat pretty decisively.
Would be nice to see Rutgers beat Ball State this saturday to finish above .500
After Pitt beat WVU I heard some idiots rationalize saying, “that’s not good for the conference”.
Well what has the Big East ever done for Pitt football? has it fractured our rivalry against our best in-state competition? has it handcuffed Pitt fans into attending yearly home games against the likes of UConn, Cinci, Temple, Rutgers, etc..? Oh, yeah I forgot… one BE football title, fantastic. 8-4 Pitt ties 4 ways for the BE title, glory days indeed.
I’m sorry, but I am about as big a fan of the Big East as an entity as I am of that cro-magnon guy with the gun for WVU.
It’s constant uncertainty with this league, and the only redeeming factor is that it should be a walk for a school like Pitt or Syracuse or even West Vaginia to go 9+ wins every single year.
If I hate the team I will root against them – it’s as simple as that.
To me, Pitt represents the conference and until Pitt strings together some BE championships I will root against every single BE team past or present.
It was nice wearing my PITT shirts around town this week though.
Hate to admit it, but Schmitt would make a great Steeler.
I couldn’t help but root for WVU for 2 reasons-
1: if WVU got blown away by Oklahoma, right or wrong, Pitt’s win in the brawl gets devalued by the rest of the country.
2: the bullshit bigeast bashing. After USC beat up on Illinois, all the commentators immediately started saying that USC is probably the best team in the nation- that despite 2 losses they should get #1 votes from pollsters (not that the votes even count). You won’t hear that about WVU since they’re in the Big East, even though WVU’s losses were against better competition, and they destroyed a much better team in their BCS bowl game.
That perception can be a killer for Pitt in the future- which is why every Big East win over the Big 12, SEC, etc is welcomed by me.
Now- if we had lost to WVU this year in the brawl, totally different story.
The Big East tried to fuck us out of a win in the Brawl. And I really don’t think that the conference is that good. I noticed that WVU can be good or bad, depending on how a game unfolds. This one just unfolded their way. USF, UConn, and Cincy were all pretty mediocre teams (at best) to be honest.
I wasn’t even rooting for them. I don’t like the team or their fans. But for their players, individually, I was happy because after their coach skipping town on them and all, I just felt that those guys kind of deserved it.
But crappy officiating and mediocre teams are all I see when I see the words “Big East”.
Pitt should be a flagship Big East school, and until the Big East’s flagship schools are its best schools, then the Big East isn’t so great.
“If a team from your conference makes the BCS title game and is a sworn rival, you cannot root for that team. Not now. Not ever. Not even if under duress, gunpoint or waterboarding in an Eastern European black site CIA detention center.”
Well thanks to us they didn’t make that title game, but this rule applies. Never cheer for WVU.
As dumb as it is, your conference has to have legitimacy in order for you to ever get the nod for the national championship game. That is why OSU played a cupcake schedule and lost a game and is in the NC over a Hawaii team that went undefeated – because the pig televen is viewed as “down a little, but still very very tough.” If WVU gets blown out, that hurts *our* chances for better bowl games in the future, or the NC.
And i don’t give a shit if they won, cause everytime they look at that Fiesta Bowl trophy, they’re going to think “if we only had beaten Pitt….” Fuck em.
Thus the injuries to Stull, Fields, Cook….
Oh – and i heard Wannstedt is the reason Miami has been awful forever, the reason they’ve had 5 coaches in 5 years, and their coach was fired today.
Great point…can you imagine a Michigan fan cheering for Ohio State in the BCS championship?
The commentator who made that comment obviously didn’t watch the Pitt/WVU, which is why we should believe only half of what you hear.
