Past Football Names

There was the story from Joe Starkey on Brian Davis. Essentially about what was and might of been.

What happened at Pitt?

“Basically, I stopped going to class,” Davis said. “Can’t blame anyone but myself. I’m not the only one who’s ever done that, won’t be the last, but I can’t blame anyone but myself.”

Davis believes he erred in staying too close to home. He put too much time into entertaining his homeboys from Washington and too little into taking care of business at Pitt.

Davis, though, is content with his life and has one.

Not so for Todd Becker.

Becker made waves as a true freshman on special teams for Pitt, a top-10 program at the time, and was named special teams captain as a sophomore. But on Dec. 16, 1982 — the day before the team was set to fly to Fort Worth for the game — his life came to a tragic end.

At the time, Becker had been banned from a dormitory for several minor infractions, most notably squirting a fire extinguisher. He snuck into the building to attend a party thrown by several of his teammates, but when authorities were called, he fled for fear that he wouldn’t be able to play in the bowl if he were caught.

Becker ultimately fell to his death from a third-story window. He was 20 years old.

The program hasn’t been the same since, enduring just 12 winning seasons in the ensuing 25 years. Pitt lost that year to SMU, reached another New Year’s Day bowl in ’83, but didn’t return until 2004 — and even then, was highly overmatched.

Something that has more to do with coaches, recruiting and players since then; but it makes an interesting time mark.

I was at Pitt with Brian Davis, lived two doors down in Tower A. Often rode with him in the elevator, which he would emergency stop to get out on are floor, (remember, it didn’t stop on every floor). He was a real good dude, but, loved to party. His roommate was Reggie Williams , the standout receiver from Beaver Falls, who was the complete opposite. Too bad he didn’t pan out, still remember that run starkey mentions agaisn’t BC, was there. Zeke Gadson also lived on our floor, anyone remember him? I would like to find out whatever happened to a couple of my best friends while at Pitt, they played football, anyone know of a way to find out? One was named Dave Shuck, from Connellsville, Dunbar actually, he was a tight end, and, Charlie Swink, also from there, he was a linebacker who had transferred from PSU. And Matt Bradley. They were all my best buddies, but, haven’t heard from them since I left Pitt. I know one, Matt Joseph, is a dentist or something in Sharon Pa, maybe I can get a hold of him. Just wondering if anyone had heard of these guys, or , knows how to get in contact. The Brian Davis story brought back some great memories!!!! Hail to Pitt!!!

20+ years later, kind of lost touch, but, guess you are right. But, in case anyone has any info on them, let me know.

How about contacting Pitt’s Alumni Office? They published an Alumni Directory. It is a few years old, but every name that you mentioned is listed there. As for Dr. Matt Joseph. You know where he lives. Try dialing (724) 555-1212 and asking the telephone operator for his number!

I just watched Brian Davis’s highlight reel and I can see why they called him one of the best ever. His video was just as good/or better than Noel devine, Sam McGuffie or Reggie Bush. This dude was the real deal and I am happy that he choose Pitt as his school.
I must say that i enjoyed the article and Brian’s candor and honesty that he partied too much and that is why he failed.
I wish he would write a book about his life because I would love to read about all the negative people that came into his life for the sole purpose of making money.
Lastly, I really enjoyed the quote- I did what I did and … I know I wont be the last…

Good Luck Brian
