It’s All About the Past

No Pitt game today. The present is bleak. The future nebulous. Time to take not of past Pitt greats.

As most are aware, Curtis Martin will be honored by Pitt at the Navy game on Wednesday.

Also attending the game will be two former teammates who will be rooting for different teams that night.

Navy’s last win over Pitt came in 1985 during the senior season of tailback Napoleon McCallum, a two-time honorable mention All-American who would play in the National Football League.

Navy and Pitt were once regular opponents, playing 19 consecutive games between 1961-1979 and seven straight times from 1983-89. The Panthers hold a 20-13-3 lead in the series, which dates back to 1912.

Two of the finest players to participate in the rivalry – former Pittsburgh tailback Tony Dorsett and ex-Navy quarterback Roger Staubach – will be in attendance at Heinz Field on Wednesday. Dorsett and Staubach were longtime teammates with the Dallas Cowboys, playing in two Super Bowls together.

The article added another tidbit that made me go, “What, 1, 2, 3, 4… crap.”

However, the once-proud program has never been quite the same since head coach Jackie Sherrill left after leading Pitt to an 11-1 record and Sugar Bowl victory in 1981. Longtime assistant Serafino “Foge” Fazio took over and mediocrity soon set in. The Panthers have suffered 14 losing or non-winning seasons since and gone through six head coaches.

Urp.

I remember watching Napoleon McCallum’s last NFL game. Ugh – knees are not supposed to bend 90-degrees THAT way…

WHy cant we get some recruiting traction from recently great nfl players like martin, fitzgerald, brown?

We need our pro alumni to come back to the city and work with these players in the off season similar to what the U and all of the other big time programs do.

typically its the retired players that help out in this department. I know Marino and Dorsett do a lot to talk with recruits. I’m sure others like Fralic and Ditka do their part as well. And it helps having Mark May on tv almost every day. The only thing that will really help is having a program thats on the rise and right now we are not.

We have recruited well. We should have augmented some trouble areas with more juco’s to get better faster, but by and large raw talent isn’t the problem. The coaches deserve props for that. But they have sucked in their actual coaching, schemes, game day execution, game plans and play calling, which by and large are failures. Perhaps the biggest sin of all is how boring the team is. This is supposed to be entertainment. Even when we win it’s tedious and drudgery.

Jackie Sherrill was the last decent coach Pitt has had. Dave W. may recruit well – but he can’t coach. People criticized Ron Zook and look at the job he has done with Illinois. As an aside, why do so many O-lineman get hurt? Maybe bad technique!

Mike Gottfried had the program going in the right direction….I recall a night game against #1 Notre Dame where Pitt just beat the crap out them in the first half…and hung on the 2nd for a well deserved win…sniff …with this current regime…what’s the chance of that ever happening in the near future….2 to 3 years ?…ever ?…
