Good News For Levance

Amid all of the football ugliness, the news of Levance Fields’ attempted assault of an off duty police officer added to the misery. He was charged with aggravated assault, public drunkenness, disorderly conduct, and others. Luckily, it looks like he’s out of most legal trouble. Today, his charges were reduced to simple assault, which will require him to enter a nine month program. If he makes it through the nine months without another incident, his record will be cleared.

He hasn’t worked out with the team since his September 16 arrest, but how he’ll be able to participate.

“I think this addresses the government’s concern for punishment, but also allows us to earn a clear record,” DelGreco said.

In a statement, coach Jamie Dixon said, “The initial report of this incident did not reflect the young man I have come to know.”

“We have let the judicial process run its course and acknowledge today’s decision,” Dixon said. “Levance has been, and will continue to be, held to our team’s disciplinary standards. Those disciplinary actions will remain within the confines of our program.”

I’m feeling a bit better about the upcoming hoops season now that we’ll have our point guard with the team — not in prison.

Upcoming hoops season? That gives me an idea. He’s fat and likes to hit people – maybe he could fill in an oline spot until then. He’s shown more agression this year then anyone on the football team.

He probably did it for free considering how much he makes off steelers, penguins, pirates, etc.

Since ’93 (CAS), most of my work has entailed interaction with adjudicated youth and offender populations in max-security prison. So I’m pleased by the outcome here because, as indicated earlier by those with law degree and/or background, these incidents rarely coincide with favorable outcomes; reaching for an officer’s belt is typically met with heavy-handed proceedings, no matter how accidental-unintentional, and regardless of age.

I’m hopeful for Fields. He’s been given a second chance where without, his life experience and direction (the latter influenced greatly at Pitt) could easily be for naught, defined only by a wasted scholarship.

For those who feel differently (above), you’ve obviously not considered your tax dollars, or your neighbors’ for that matter. I’m willing to believe (for now) that this is the exception — not the rule — when evaluating Fields, the person. (Assessing him as a bball player over the past years, it’d be wrong to deny benefit of doubt.)

The University should nevertheless ensure suspension. Any other course of action without consequence would mock whatever standards in place by the School and its athletic programs.

Quick note to the friend alum (N.Y. native) I met earlier this year (with wife and child) at the Fox & Hound in King of Prussia, PA. The game: Pitt v. Georgetown; outcome: Pitt loss.

How’s Kinder doing?

Watch a game with my fiancée (you’ve met), twin brother, and me before season’s close, I hope. Reach me at markon8@yahoo.com if interested. Hope all’s well. –Neil

So if this was Scirrotto and PSU, we’d be hearing cries about “kangaroo courts” and “PSU justice.” Can I ask what’s the difference here?

Yeah, I’m thinking Fields got some leniency because he’s an athlete, too.

I still think this is a little more defensible, though, if only because Fields didn’t manage to hurt anybody. And he was drunk. Assaulting people when you’re sober is worse.

[…] So Levance Fields is essentially in the clear as long as he keeps his nose clean. Obviously this is good for Pitt basketball. Fields had not been permitted to practice with the team or the coaches since it had happened. He is now, apparently back in the fold. All punishment by Coach Dixon will remain in-house according the brief statement released to the media. “Over the last three years, I have viewed firsthand the very positive way Levance Fields has conducted himself as a person, student and athlete while at the University of Pittsburgh. The initial report of this incident did not reflect the young man I have come to know. […]

I guess there aren’t 15 people sitting around agreeing on the same version of events. The funny thing is your criminals are going to trial, but still haven’t missed a single day. Ours has resolved his issues, and was punished more than yours. And if you didn’t notice the other half dozen criminals on your team already got at least this good of an outcome, or better. Quit you whining – he got the same deal anyone else would have in this case.

I don’t think he has to be suspended for any games. He hasn’t been allowed to work out, or be involved, with the team since the incident. That is similar to a suspension. If they don’t decide to suspend him, which I don’t believe they will, then it doesn’t mean we don’t have standards. The kid didn’t get into any trouble prior to this incident and was given an opportunity to prove that this was an aberration by the court. Any first time offender with a decent attorney would have received a similar punishment.
