It might be time to shy away from recruits in upstate New York for a few years. There seems to be some bad karma or something going on with the kids from there.
Syracuse tight end Tom Ferron (Clyde-Savannah) and Michigan lineman Justin Schifano (Webster Schroeder) quit their respective teams. Pittsburgh receiver Derek Kinder (Albion) is out for the year with a torn ACL in his right knee, an injury that occurred Aug. 11 during a non-contact drill.
Now comes word that tailback Kevin Collier, Kinder’s Pitt teammate and Section V’s all-time leading rusher, also will miss the 2007 season after breaking his right wrist Thursday in the Panthers’ final preseason practice.
“I hate to use the word unusual or freak play, but we saw it on film,” Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt told reporters. “He fell on that wrist 10 times every day for the last month, and why this time it broke, I have no idea. So, we’ll use this as a redshirt year (for Collier).”
Add in McKenzie Mathews quitting last year along with the ongoing Greg Paulus ineptitude at Duke, and it just isn’t good times for those players right now.
We would still like to see Averin Collier commit. So many college players are going to get something once in their tenure that it is not surprising nor career threatening to see a broken wrist lead to a redshirt. Collier could end up being a really good back for Pitt by the time he finishes. That extra year is so big in terms of size, strength, skills and maturity. Many players need it to get to the top.
Me, I thinks it’ll be a fair trade. Anything that’ll give wingnuts the apoplexy to that degree will most entertaining.
‘Til then, we’ve Larry Craig.
Beyond that, how’s the dance team gonna be this year?
And the dance team is going to be….fat. As usual. The female students at fan fest are upgraded over the girls that went to school with me…as they have been steadily increasing…but the dance team and cheerleaders still look like butt. I just don’t understand. Is there a minimum weight or something? FCS we should give out scholarships to attractive cheerleaders/dance team members. We have a billion dollars, time to use it on something useful. Except stop letting them get the “athlete” meal plan. Ban them from the cafe under towers – or whatever its called now – no more all you can eat. Its embarassing when they show those girls on TV – what kid is like “oh shit! i gotta get me some of that!” Its not helping in recruiting students. You see, its not for me to look at, its for the kids I tell you!
…sad, but true
