I realize, he wasn’t going to be the starting back and may have been #3 on the depth chart behind LaRod Stephens-Howling and LeSean McCoy, but the news that Kevin Collier broke his wrist and is done for the season is barely mentioned. Did this happen during the FanFest open practice?
That stinks for Collier. He has the medical redshirt available, but on the last day of camp. Jeez.
“What this does is puts [backup fullback] Shane Brooks back in the tailback position and I would think that the possibility of redshirting [freshman] Henry Hynoski is not going to happen because he’ll move up a spot on the depth chart and become the No. 2 fullback,” Wannstedt said.
I have to admit, I’m not totally following why Coach Wannstedt believes that Hynoski will not be redshirted now. He seems to be insisting on having a 3 backs in the tailback depth chart and 2 in the FB. Exactly why, when Coach Wannstedt has insisted that it won’t be a tailback by committee. It seems unnecessary to decide (or at least declare) the likelihood of Hynoski’s redshirt status immediately with 2 tailbacks and 2 fullbacks presently set on the depth chart.
What am I missing?
Questions, did anyone play college football 2008 for xbox 360? If yes, what do you think about Pitt in the game? I must say that am throughly pleased with Pitt. The qb is very average but the left side of the line is solid and we are deep on defense. Surprisingly our secondary and defensive line are not that bad. DD is a beast. Super fast but always out of position. Shady is solid but LSH is better in the game but shady shows alot of signs. The TE are solid, led by Bynham.
Yezovich, by all accounts, is a fine blocker but brings nothing more to the position — see Kevin Gorman’s series in the Trib (8/13-14) in which he lists offensive/ defensive position battles (per unit), if but only for the sake of providing fans with a preliminary depth chart.
In the article, Conredge Collins gets “puff[ed]” with honorable mention going to “ultraback” Shane Brooks. Hyno gets the nod over Yezovich, who is located at the bottom of the heap with the abovementioned pro-cons.
In any event, that’s what’s being reported at FB.
I don’t know, but with the amount of injuries PITT seems to have in the preseason and during the games it seems wise to me to have everyone who might be called on to play in a game be given the maximum amount of practice and preparation time.
Plus I think when you tell a kid he’s redshirting – even if you preface it with “we might still need you just in case” – he’s going to check out a little mentally and perhaps in the amount of effort he puts into the practices.
Young players need to be engaged regularly especially if they are going to be called on to step into the game in the span of one play. Hynoski is one play away from being a starting FB now.
Bottom line with me is that I think us fans get too carried away with the idea of redshirting everyone and stockpiling for the future. Fans think in very theoretical terms – like 3-4 years in the future. Burn up redshirts now and if a kid goes down – like Kinder and Collier (throw a Fields situation in there also) – in the third game, as opposed to the preseason, then he’s completely screwed.
According to all the reports – DW’s time is now to start showing results, we need that to happen for the team, the program and for future recruits. Why leave some of your best talent behind when you’re in that position?
On the other side of the coin, the 2 deep at FB were to be Collins/Brooks. Brooks going over to TB elevates Hynoski to the number 2 spot.
