For the Big East media days, Rivals Radio interviewed a player from each Big East team. Pitt’s representative was Derek Kinder and the interview can be heard here. Before even finishing greeting one another, the interviewer immediately asks, “Who is going to be your starting quarterback?” The answer was pretty much what you’d expect: he’s seen three different guys in practice and didn’t say if any where ahead of the others.

He says the upcoming season isn’t looking too bad and that last year’s 6-6 record was a failure in the end. When he talks about them needing to finish games better, I automatically gag and think of the Michigan State and UConn games. In all, it’s a quick little interview, and not a bad listen.

Also, for your Penn State fill of the week, two articles about PSU and more specifically, their fan base. The first is from Rakes of Mallow, a Notre Dame blog. Penn State and Notre Dame are two of the three teams I dislike the most (WVU the third) but the ND writer makes some great points; highly recommended reading.

I don’t blame Penn State for trying to find a rival, as they don’t really have one. Ohio State is considerably more concerned with Michigan, and vice-versa, while the Irish are more focused on the Wolverines and Trojans. They could restart the local rivalry with Pitt, but the Lions envision themselves on some sort of blue-and-white pedestal when it comes to playing the Panthers.

There was also a reader submission from Mondesi’s House about college allegiances. The reader says that his Penn State co-workers dislike his favorite coach, Jim Tressel.

You would think Jim Tressel stole some of these fans’ dates to the prom, they HATE him with such passion.

This is the classic case of where PSU fans are looking for a rival. They try to act all tough towards Ohio State when Buckeye fans simply shrug it off since they have more important teams to throw their animosity towards.

Well shit, if bloggers say it then it MUST be true. If you want crazy fans, maybe you should read the comments section of the previous post.

Kind of reminds me of how Pitt fans “try to act all tough towards” Penn State when Nittany Lion fans “simply shrug it off since they have more important teams to throw their animosity towards.”

You mock us for behavior that you are guilty of.

PSU – always the bridesmaid never the bride.
Too good for Pitt, supposedly, but not good enough for OSU, Michigan, USC or ND.

This is old-our rival is WVU..we play them in both sports and we are both pretty decent at both.

Comment by scoocher 07.25.07 @ 2:50 pm

Scoocher,
I really hate WVU, and I agree they are our rival right now. Can you honestly say that if we played PSU next year, along with WVU, you wouldn’t want to beat PSU a little more? I know I would.

Comment by dan 07.25.07 @ 4:41 pm

Our rivals are the Mountaineers as scoocher says. It has gotten to the point where Penn State to us is the Marshall to West Virginia…we will play you but we have better fish to fry. I would love to see PSU on our schedule every year but how can we compete with the allure of Temple?! How CAN we I ask you?. Penn State likes them more and I feel like an old rag on fire . In the end if we play PSU every other year at their place then problem solved but they like money more than they like “The Pennsylvania Football Fan”. Other schools know this and find it ridiculous. PSU is now the snooty high school girl that all the boys wanted to be with but now see her as a girl that poops herself during football games. Nobody wants a stinky girlfriend that wants you to come over her house more times than she comes over to yours. Stinky poopie pants gets the hose at my house!
I rather have Slaton break the rushing record against us than see Joe Paterno giggle as he poops because he thinks he won a battle of contracts and television deals. Take your $10.00 popcorn and your $1.00 smile and have fun beating Temple 13-3.
I have more to say but I have to run to the bathroom…maybe later.

“It has gotten to the point where Penn State to us is the Marshall to West Virginia…we will play you but we have better fish to fry”

I think your dislike of PSU is getting in the way of your common sense. They are the ones who don’t want to play us, remember?
If we could schedule PSU for football, they would be our rivals.

Comment by dan 07.25.07 @ 4:59 pm

If you do your research, it is not about the money for PSU. Paterno just needs to one up us after what we did to his precious all eastern conference. They know they will bring in a lot more money playing Pitt then they will Temple.

Comment by Scott 07.25.07 @ 5:17 pm

West Virginia is our rival. I remember the good games we had against PSU but those days are over. You need to see that Pennsylvania State University does not want to play US. We are very high risk because 1. We could have a bad season like we have had and still beat PSU. That would kill them because they could drop to a whole lower tier of bowl games with the defeat. 2. Recruiting Wars…a PITT win could send undecided kids our way and if they win it doesn’t really help them as much. At this point they have too much to lose. 3. They want to keep their options open. They want a freebie and they don’t want Pittsburgh to be mouthy. If they think Clemson is a better get in 2068 then they don’t want us to get ahead of ourselves after 2065. It’s a stiffarm right in the University of Pittsburgh’s face. That’s why we balked at their proposal. It’s something called “Pride”….would you have taken the deal, Dan?. The University of Pittsburgh is not beneath PSU, nor are we above them or West Virginia University. It’s not my dislike that gets in my way of common sense, it’s the idea of us being treated as lower primates. I see us at the same level as PSU and WVU. PSU sees themselves higher than us and apparently is trying to climb higher up that tree to reach other “higher beings”. Are you kidding me? Just play the damn game. As I said above I would love to play PSU every year but they would not feel like a primary rivalry anymore. We play WVU in football once a year and we play them in Basketball twice, maybe three times a year(BE Tourney)….that’s our main rivalry.
If I sound angry it’s because I haven’t expressed myself about this topic before until now. Cut me some slack..or respond with anger, whatever. Either way it’s a blog and we can vent…it’s my mind and heart controlling my fingers.

Comment by dan 07.25.07 @ 7:09 pm

Panthoor,
I apologize if I offended you, it was not my intention. That said, I totally understand where you are coming from, My dislike for PSU is great and the arrogance of that program is disgusting. Pitt is treated by PSU as a castoff and not worthy of their time. I hope when Pitt returns to national prominence and PSU is suffering through some lean years we will be more than willing to set egos aside and play the game.

Comment by dan 07.25.07 @ 7:20 pm

I wasn’t offended, Dan. We PITT fans gotta stick together hehe. I just had to get some stuff off my chest…I apologize to anyone if I went off and rained on a bit.

Comment by Panthoor 07.25.07 @ 10:28 pm

Honestly, Penn State is our rival. Just because we don’t play, doesn’t mean anything has changed. Look, Pitt fans know we don’t need to play Penn State. It would benefit Pitt from a $$$$ standpoint, but that’s about it. But Pitt and Penn State is a great rivalry because the school are so different, but many of the kids are from the same areas. So it’s somewhat even, just different, both with great history, etc. That’s a great rivalry.

West Virginia is just such a bunch of redneck fans and hoods for players, yeah, Pitt fans hate to lose to them, but in general, Pitt fans don’t brag about beating them. Pitt fans feel like they should beat them as Pitt is a more prestigous program with better history and in general a more attractive school to play football at. WVU gets many of the leftovers from the other schools, either because they aren’t that talented, have a criminal record, or are as dumb as a post. Now WVU is smart by running a gimmick defense that can take advantage of undersized kids that can’t get in othter places and by having a glorified high school offense that do the same thing with athletic QBs that could never play in the pros.

The Penn State Pitt rivalry is also more about JoePa than anything. Yes, their fan base is very arrogant, generally older, snobbier, more elitest. So that’s annoying. Penn State grad also think Happy Valley is this amazing place, which anyone with half a brain know it’s actually pretty weak when it comes to college towns. So there is some differences that irritate fans of each. But they still have way more in common. It’s JoePa’s hatred of Pitt that has made the rivalry nastier. But he’ll be dead soon, Pitt will be too talented to continue to lose to WVU, and all will be well.

Comment by Ryan 07.25.07 @ 10:44 pm

Need I remind you all that PSU was very gracious in playing Pitt in Pittsburgh for decades. There were times we played several years in a row before Pitt was willing to throw PSU a bone and play a game in Happy Valley. But that’s when Pitt was a good team and PSU was still a growing program. Now the shoe is on the other foot and PSU is the team with National appeal and we see that Pitt is the one not willing to humble themselves to play in State College more often than Pittsburgh for “the good of the rivalry”.

Have fun playing West Virginia and Louisville. Hope you go to a bowl game to gain some respectability so we can maybe someday renew this rivalry.

Comment by blahblahblah 07.26.07 @ 8:52 am

The bottom line is that everyone wants the rivalry to be renewed except the coach, el poopypants. Pitt should man up ( i am pitt grad) and accept the offer from sharts draws of two for one and beat the living daylights out of those snobs (game played on or around thanksgiving and maybe one year in Philly at the linc).

We must attest that pitt has not lived up to the national college football standards this past decade. Let get those preppies on our schedule as soon as possible. Lets earn a home a home by beating their arse on the field (Plus, this will call chocolate streaks bluff)

We need those snobs and deep down those snobs needs us the same.

Hail to Pitt-

This will be a Huge Year for the Panthers. I am thinking 9-3 but mostly likely 8-4.

Get excited

Comment by cdmoore25 07.26.07 @ 9:57 am

Chief ShitsinPants will be gone in a few years, we just have to wait him out.

Comment by Rex 07.26.07 @ 10:10 am

Exactly Rex. Once Paterno’s out, his successor, possibly Bradley, will schedule Pitt, and on a fair home and home basis. Until then, we still have WVU, which is far more of a rivalry than Michigan State-Penn State or Ohio State-Penn State will ever be, and we still will after we start playing PSU again. How great will it be to play two genuinely hated rivals every year?

Comment by Chris 07.26.07 @ 11:20 am

How can UPS schedule Pitt when they have to fill the openings with the worst programs college football has to offer:

link to sports.espn.go.com (bottom 3 on schedule…in same season)

By the way, here is the nitters record against their “rivals” in the Big 10 since joining:
ohio state : 5-9
michigan : 3-9

Comment by MikeO 07.26.07 @ 2:33 pm

“blahblahblah” PSU wanted to play in pittsburgh whe the games started because their stadium sucked and was too small. If only your history department was as good as your farming department.

You have had a better record than us in 2 of the last 7 years. I guess your math department is not doing so well either.

Your “national appeal” is being a school 4 times as large as us. You have a larger fan base, and live in farmland where that is the only thing to do. Get over it. We don’t want to play for money, or recruits, or any of that bullshit. We just want to beat your ass.

12-0.

Comment by Stuart 07.26.07 @ 5:39 pm

Reply to Ryan. You need to learn some truth, not the lies from Old Joe. Way back in the 1920s, 30s & 40s, Penn State wanted the big rival game in Pittsburgh because of the size of the gate. Beaver Stadium has only 25,000 seats and the difficulty of getting there on inadequate 2 lane roads made playing in Oakland a better prospect. With Joe still mad about the long-dead Pitt AD and University President ruining the All-Sports Conference , he evidently wanted to run, he has to engage in revisionist history to justify ruining a great college rivalty. Just as he lays out terms that he knows are unacceptable to today’s living Pittsburgh athletic administration. No BCS conference team demands a greater amount of home games in a series with another BCS conference team. All Penn State fans who diss the notion of again playing the Panthers should note the fine slate of out-of-conference games that Joe has for you in 2007. There are 119 Division One schools. And you got 117 ( Temple), 118 ( Buffalo ) and 119 ( Florida International ) . Do tell yourselves that these are the teams you prefer to see rather than opening with the Panthers this Labor Day weekend. If Pitt is just the road kill for Joe’s stalwart young gentleman scholar-athletes, why not play us? What chance would we have against a second echelon Big Ten team?

Comment by Roberto 07.27.07 @ 12:45 am

Roberto, please don’t try to reason with the morons. They don’t understand history. They make it up as they go along to suit themselves. Didn’t you know that PSU is the greatest ever and never loses and i can’t hear you lalalalalalala…

12-0.
