Deep breath everyone. It may be a lousy logo replacing a lousy logo, but it is only a secondary logo. For example, that needed replacement of the 1997-era “Pittsburgh” logo and panther head in the Pete that was in the paper today. It’s not like it’s going to be with the new dino-cat. They will just have the block “PITT.” Right?

That’s because a giant tile logo that reads “Pittsburgh,” built at a cost of more than $100,000 into the main lobby floor of the Petersen Events Center, will be torn up and modified under an effort to put the “PITT” back in Pitt athletics.

Jeff Long, the school’s athletic director, yesterday confirmed the planned work this summer inside the 12,500-seat arena, which opened in 2002 and is home to the school’s basketball teams.

He said the Panther head inside the logo also will be updated to a newer, sleeker version announced last month.

Oh, wait. Crap.

It would have been fine with just the big block lettered logo. Clean, simple and uncomplicated. On the bright side, when you go into the Pete, you will at least be able to stomp on that dino-cat to get some of the frustration out of your system.

I was thinking the exact same thing, just put the PITT block letters and be done with it….what a waste of money. In 2 years we will have new and “improved” logo anyway.

uh.. how about the sides of the seats at heinz field..they all have old logo emblazoned on them.

How much money are they going to waste before they finally just give it up and go back to the script Pitt? It’s going to eventually happen. EVERYBODY wants it. Why not just suck it up and go to the script now? $100,000 for a new logo on the Pete floor is just ridiculous.

they won’t because “marketing” tells them not to. athletics run by marketing people stink!

Chas, when are you going to revert back to the old PSB comic sans script?

I think I speak for the majority of readers when I say we miss the script and the new colors look too much like the Blue Gray Sky blog.

I would even settle for one post per year using the old throwback comic sans. Joking.

Seriously though, if the Pitt script fanatics had their way we would still be playing in Pitt Stadium and Fitzgerald Field House.

It’s time to move on. The script isn’t coming back for at least another 20 years, so you all may as well get used to seeing block letters and Dino-cats or whatever you call it.

The only reason I would want the script back is if it would guarantee no more whining about how the uniforms look. Even then, somebody, somewhere will take issue with an element of the uniform – be it helmets, logo, colors, lettering, stripes, matching pants, blue socks or whatever.

Football fashion chat is, however about 3x as interesting as recruiting speculation, for what it’s worth.

I say we just change colors all together…pink is always hot. A pink dino cat giving the other team’s running back the finger is worth $100,000 in my opinion. For further promoting, the Defensive coaches should also wear pink(only for road games though). Naw, nobody wants the script back…it was only a sign of football greatness and a spreader of fear across the mightiest nation on Earth.

And what’s to become of the big old Dinocat sculpture on the team store in the Pete?

I think our mascot should be the matador. Ole’

I actually like the current colors better than the old ones, and I was a student there during the national championship days. When I watch old film of Dorsett and Marino I think the uniforms look fine, but what I’m actually liking about that look is the way they PLAYED. Unfortunately, the uniform does not make the players better, and reverting back to the old look won’t make us national champion contenders every year. If it did, I’m all for going back to the old days. It’s time to move on.

When I thought that Dinobeagle was going to just be on ballcaps and shotglasses and maybe the football players’ sleeves I wasn’t so perturbed. But now they’re going to mosaicize it into the floor? I thought it was our “secondary” logo. In 5 years everyone will have come to the realization that it looks like the Hound of the Baskervilles and want to tear it up again. They should have used the $25,000 for a prize to whatever artist, anywhere in the country, could come up with the best new Pitt logo. Then they could have put some generic Home Depot tiles in the lobby and everyone would have been happy.
