The Big East announced the 18 game conference schedule. Every team in the conference plays each other once, and 3 home-and-homes. How do they decide those?

The conference said that the opponents a school plays twice were based on “natural interest, geography, rivalries and television contractual obligations.”

Well,  for Pitt obviously WVU is one of them. In basketball, Marquette-Pitt has been well on its way to being a “rivalry” as the games have been heated and tough in every meeting. So, naturally Marquette and Pitt only meet once. These are Pitt’s 3 home-and-homes.

Pittsburgh: Cincinnati, Villanova, West Virginia

WVU and ‘Nova make sense. But Cinci? WVU should have the home-and-home with Cinci but they end up with Providence and St. John’s as their other two? Huh? Yes, there’s things that make sense. Private, small, East Coast schools are a natural fit to play WVU.

As for the the other 12 conference games for Pitt.

  • Away: UConn, Marquette, Notre Dame, St. John’s, USF, Syracuse
  • Home: DePaul, Georgetown, Louisville, Providence, Rutgers, Seton Hall

I’m still trying to accept playing Cinci twice.

Didn’t we always play Syracuse and UConn twice? Was that just before the expansion?

These are just some of many reasons I advocated splitting the conference up, dividing into schools that play both sports and breaking away from the others. I’d always prefer playing UConn and Syracuse twice. If Nova moved up to I-A football they could come along also. Cinci isn’t great now but has potential. Louisville is a definite. Marquette unfortunately would be out in this scenario. But really, once James is gone, all that’s left to despise is Crean.

And yes, I know, we’d lose the hallowed Big East name. Pffffft. That name doesn’t do us much favors for football, frankly (not that we’re helping it any). And I know, losing MSG for the tournament. NYC is a factor for recruiting, yes, I’ll concede that. But, y’know, MSG probably could host a 2nd tournament too. What it comes down to is that I never have cared much about Georgetown (since the Ewing days anyway) or St. Johns or Providence (or DePaul or Marquette, not much anyway). Probably my football bias. Anyway, my side lost that argument, obviously. But these little shafts from Tranghese and co. always give me the “I told you so” opportunity…

SU somehow pulled South Florida twice.

Feel the tradition of Orange-Bulls basketball!
