Pitt and Clemson have agreed to cancel the home-and-home for 2010 and 2011. I think this was a mutual thing. While, it may have been a mutual thing, I think Pitt really wanted out for a couple reasons. The 2010 schedule already had Miami and ND making it a bear of a non-con even assuming they added patsies from 1-A and 1-AA to round out the schedule. It also means they might be able to do a home-and-home with a team starting in 2009 where they already have 7 home games set (UCF, Navy, ND, Cinci, UConn, USF, ‘Cuse) where Pitt can start on the road.

Unrelated, but with amusing timing, an early Clemson verbal now appears ready to switch to Pitt.

Madison (Ohio) tight end Nic DiLillo, ranked No. 12 nationally by Scout.com, has reneged on his commitment to Clemson and favors Pitt.

The 6-5, 225-pound DiLillo took an unofficial visit to Pitt on Friday, then called Clemson coaches last night and informed them that it was too far away from home, according to the fan site, CUTigers.com. Thanks to the recruitment by newly promoted Panthers tight ends coach Brian Angelichio, Pitt appears to be the frontrunner for DiLillo.

Scout.com has DiLillo as a 4-star recruit and Rivals.com puts him at 3-stars and the 19th best TE prospect. Michigan and Syracuse are also interested. Not sure what that does for Pitt’s recruitment of Hubie Graham and possibly still going after Mike Cruz. Kevin Gorman seems to think Pitt may also land Graham as well. Graham is ranked higher than DiLillo and holds offers from Michigan and Oklahoma as well.

I disagree with this move. Of course I do not know all the details involved, but id rather see a Clemson over a Youngstown St, Grambling, or any 1-AA school. I know Clemson isnt a powerhouse school, but they wouldve been another ACC school that couldve gotten their ass kicked by a Big East school (Pitt). But thats just my view.

at first I was also disappointed to hear this but as Chas stated above we already have Miami and ND in our non con. Plus the Big East schedule should continue to get tougher as well. WVU is always a tough out, Louisville, Rutgers is getting better and better, South Florida is on the rise, Cinci made a bowl game. So we could potentially be playing 5 or more top 25 teams in one season which is great bt we also need a few breaks.

You may be right Rex. I just think that Pitt should be a good enough program to beat Clemson, most years. We should be superior to that. Plus I believe you get better from playing good competition…. I can understand that everyone has a few games that are supposed to be “automatic wins,” but for Pitt these games havent been automatic. Only bad things can happen when you play 1-AA-like competition. If you win it was expected. If you lose, its pretttty bad…

Comment by Matt D 06.19.07 @ 9:28 am

Sorry to say that I disagree with Rex unless this is an opening for PSU to be added to the schedule for a very long time. The two ways to improve our program especially since we are not winning and also in a conference that does not get any love from the media- is to add Top BSC schools to your schedule to give them the ole fashion Pitt A$$ whopping and get on NATIONAL television(this will enhance recruiting). If Wanny beleives he will get this team back to prominence (i beleive it will happen) than lets build our scheudle to match the big boys so theirs no questions when we hoist the trophy in the coming years. No more pasties games like this year’s disqusting schedule. Keep Clemson on or add a team from the so called powerhouse conference SEC or Big 12.

It is time that PITT STEPS UP ON THE FIELD and WITH A SCHEDULE TO MATCH.

I guarentte PITT stand wont be empty and season tickets increase if we bring in the bigs boys to play.

Sorry- I missed read Rex and Matt’s comments- Keep Clemson on the ledger.

I grew up in Clemson, so I’m disappointed…

Bigger issue down here in Clempson country – it’s a very real possibility that Tommy Bowden will be fired after the disappointing season that’s about to happen, so there may be some forward thinking to clear the schedule a bit for whoever they bring in next.

Still, those games would have been a lot of fun, certainly a more interesting match-ups than most of the BE lineup.

CD, the problem is that Pitt hasnt yet proven it can play with the big boys and until they do no need to embarrass ourselves on a national stage – see Miami, Utah, WVU, and so on. If you remember, Walt Harris actually built the program by scheduling some patsies, it got Pitt in to some bowl games and gave the team some confidence. Getting your ass beat by a bigger school on national tv doesnt serve much of a purpose until you are ready. Hopefully we will get better but until we see some wins on the field there is no evidence that is going to happen. As I said earlier I think we already have a tough schedule for 2010 and 2011 so why not wait to do something with Clemson later on when we may need them more.

Comment by Rex 06.19.07 @ 9:55 am

Rex the issue is that we’re at Clemson’s level now… the usually a bowl team – should be better – recruits well type of program… those are the type of teams you MUST beat to finish out the year as a top 25 team.

Walt didn’t build a program as much as he built an illusion, as you referenced. Scheduling lesser programs may give the feel that progress has been made because the Ws add up… but, once we’d leave our comfort zone in the Walt era, we’d get crushed – mentally, as well as on the score board.

Playing teams, like Clemson, who have similar expectations make catching the upper echeleon more realistic, while getting the program ready, mentally, to play the Miamis of the college foootball world. So, if we can’t keep the Tigers (for whatever reason) we must replace them with a similar team because we need that type of competetion now. At this point, those games mean as much as playing Miami or a dominant WVU team.

dont misunderstand me, I would love to see clemson on the schedule. But at this point it might be a little much with Miami and ND already there, and dont we have Iowa coming up? How long does our series extend with MI State?

Comment by Rex 06.19.07 @ 10:57 am

I guess asking for Pitt to play some reputable competition is asking too much. They should have not canceled this series. If Pitt wants to be respected we need to play and beat BCS schools, not Div 1-AA schools.

Comment by C 06.19.07 @ 11:21 am

I agree. It is not like we are playing USC, Florida, Okalhoma and OSU. We are playing legit teams and no more cupcakes. Would you buy season tickets for the season with miami, nd iowa and clemson along with big east. i would. To be honest, I am hoping that one day we play okalhoma, texas, florida, lsu or any of those top schools.

Comment by cdmoore25 06.19.07 @ 11:36 am

we should play these schools but not until we’re ready – or we can at least finish .500. getting the tar beat out of you on national tv in no way helps the program. we need some baby steps here. heck we got crushed by MI State at home after starting out hot, do you really want to see the disaster that texas or USC would throw on us. I would love to line up against them once we get our program on solid ground and that will not happen overnight. And just because clemson is gone doesnt mean we cant replace it with another decent game.

Comment by Rex 06.19.07 @ 11:47 am

Rex- if we arent ready to play like Miami, ND Iowa and Clemson by the start of the 09-10 season than we will never be ready. Wanny has built this team for the 08 season. This year with a cupcake schedule will get us to atleast a bowl game. The main goal here is to compete for four quarters against the big boys. We already proved that we can hang for a little while but now with the talent in place expect great strides this year and 08 is our run.

Question- I was looking at our prospect list for the 08 recruiting class. where are the defensive and Offensive linemen at? yes, there are plenty of LBs to go around which I hope we can snag at least two of them (Yancich, Hale or Wilson). Here is my wish list,
Nix, Baldwin Collier, Yancich, Hale, Graham or Dilliou at TE, Mackey and Sales to go along with the first four commits.

I dont have inside information but dont be surprise if Pryor’s name come back up. His dad wants him to go to Pitt and with that Schedule we are guarentte to be on TV

Comment by cdmoore25 06.19.07 @ 11:57 am

Exactly…..by 2010 Pitt should not still be in rebuilding mode. Wannstedt would be in his 6th season. Pitt needs to be playing reputable schedules.

Comment by C 06.19.07 @ 2:23 pm

The Big East isn’t deep enough to play a patsy non-con schedule. I don’t think WVU Rutgers and Louisville are built to last, and the rest of the conference will be lucky to repeat last year’s success – especially if Pitt starts winning again.

Sure, if we had ND, Miami AND USC, that would be pretty tough non-con; Clemson is no USC, and likely never will be. Clemson is a VERY beatable team, they’re in Division 1-A, and they are in a semi-respectable conference (i.e. not the MAC or C-USA). Our non-con must compensate for the Big East’s shortcomings, and replacing Clemson with a MAC school or worse doesn’t do that.

Comment by Patrick 06.19.07 @ 3:16 pm

Patrick- If what you say is true that you dont think rutger, wvu and the ville are bulit to last than it is impertive that we boost up our non conference schedule to make up for those teams. Are you scared as a fan to play the best and ask for the best out of your alma mater? No more cupcakes for us after this season. a Tougher out of conference schedule like the 09-10 will get us the exposure we need.
Tougher out of conference games not only for the team but for the FANS..
Your money deserves to be rewarded with top flight teams coming into the burg.

[…] Last week there was word that Nic DiLillo out of Madison, Ohio had backed off of his verbal to Clemson, and was looking to Pitt. According to Scout.com, he has given Pitt a verbal. DiLillo is a 3- to 4-star TE prospect and considered the 12th best in the country according to Scout.com. Rivals.com lists him as the 20th best player in Ohio. […]
