Pitt Power Rankings

Filed under: Power Rankings — Dennis @ 3:58 pm

Everyone likes Power Rankings, yet never before have we seen them completely dedicated to our Pittsburgh Panthers. Every week or so we’ll take a look at the biggest news makers related to Pitt sports — all in Power Ranking form.

5. PittsburghPanthers.com Writers
At the bottom of this article, they write:

Single-game tickets, if available, will not go on sale until August.

If available?

4. Joe Clermond, DE, Pitt football
Clermond was named to the watch list for the 2007 Bronko Nagurski Trophy. He’s going to be the only player on this year’s football team that will even be close to any sort of award, and yet we could finish with a better team record than last year.

3. Terrelle Pryor, Basketball/Football Prospect, Jeannette HS
Pryor said he wasn’t going to come be a Panther with little explanation.

“They’re just not in it,” Pryor said. “That’s my picks.”

Thanks, Terrelle. You’re really giving us all the info you can. Good luck with that NFL career. If you were planning on playing hoops in the long run then I’m sure you wouldn’t rule out Jamie Dixon’s team as quickly as you did.

2. Pitt and Michigan State
Jeff Long will be bashed in a moment, but being able to work with MSU and their AD, Ron Mason, to get the September 15 game nationally televised is a solid job.

1. Jeff Long, Athletic Director
There’s definitely some backlash towards the football starting times released so far. Most of the comments questioned the times and what the athletic department was doing. Long hasn’t been the most popular guy in Oakland for a while now and he’s yet to do something that really gets him in our good graces.

There is no way Pryor is playing b-ball. If he does try to play both sports he will probably end up like Ronald Curry, the 2 sport high school star who played at UNC(QB and PG)in the early 2000 and is now with the Raiders. Curry could have been great at one in college but he did turn out to be a decent 2 to 3rd receiver in the NFL.

Chris Hayden-Martin (GCC) gave his verbal to the staff today. Probably the #DB in the state this year and I have ranked very close to Holley. Very good pick up for Pitt.

I like this Power Rankings thing..nice idea and a good way to make it thru the rest of the off season.

lets be carefull about the pryor bashing..I am not convinced we are out of it and remember mccoy was heavily considering state (again) before he learned of the blog community bashing him as a traitor.

Comment by scoocher 06.16.07 @ 5:34 pm

True, that. It’s fairly classless to bash a 17 year old kid. It seems clear his emphasis has switched to football so how can anyone really blame his diminished interest in Pitt right now? At this time, we don’t particularly deserve it.

I wouldn’t call anything I’ve said “bashing,” unless you were talking about other commenters.

… I agree there Tim. Nice twist Dennis.

On Pryor & McCoy:

Compare all you want, scoocher, just don’t hold your breathe on the prospect; you’ll not see him a Panther of any type lest for a change of heart (and subsequent transfer) following a vexed freshman year (elsewhere).

At that point I think you’ll be safe to exhale.
It’s a good dream to dream, however, albeit nevertheless unadvisable.

Story in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle about Averin Collier and the text-messaging ban. Brief mention of Pitt:

link to democratandchronicle.com

“The recruiters ruined it because they overdid it,” he (Churchville-Chili coach Paul Dick) said. “It was a classic case of overkill, of trying to keep up with the Joneses. Syracuse sends you seven text messages in a day, so Pitt figures it has to send eight, and so on and so on. It just escalated to a point where it became ridiculous.”

Comment by David in Orlando 06.17.07 @ 8:47 am

What’s wrong with what Pryor said? Would you have prefer him to state the negative reasons as to why he’s not going to Pitt and further humiliate the Pitt program?? He kept it short and simple, while not making any negative comments towards the program.

Comment by C 06.17.07 @ 4:03 pm

Good call C. We don’t need anymore bad pub from recruits that dont want to come here.

Comment by Chris 06.18.07 @ 9:55 am

stop, just commenting. Often view other boards and other teams (do not post though) and they bash players for not choosing their school-especially state…I think they’re immediate reaction to mccoy for example hurt them.

I actually think he wo’y play football-just hoops, too tall.

p.s. I like the power ranking theme
