Big 33 Fun

It’s the 50th Anniversary of the Big 33 game, and I think it’s safe to say that most college football fans just hope that the kids coming to their school don’t get hurt. The offline world kept me from doing this yesterday, but judging by the comments at the end of this thread, the general view to knowing Pitt commits are playing is fear of injury.

Now, the story on Linebacker Travis Wolff from Shaler is nice. I like very much that he wants to come play for Pitt. That said, I don’t know if or when that would happen.

After that, he will head to Milford Academy, a prep school in New Berlin, N.Y., where he intends to play in the fall.

Wolff hopes Milford is just a stop on his way to bigger things. A lifelong Pitt fan, his dream is one day to play collegiately with the Panthers, but he must get his academic resume in order first.

“I’m trying to look at this as a three-step process,” Wolff said. “The Big 33 is the first step and Milford is the second step. Hopefully, Pitt will be the third step.”

See, the NCAA has put new rules into effect with prep schools. Effectively funneling most kids who don’t have their academics in order to junior colleges.

But the NCAA changed the rules this year after thorough reporting by the Washington Post and New York Times exposed so-called diploma mill prep schools. So starting in 2008, to be eligible, a student will need 16 core classes and only one can come from a postgraduate year.

The article on Wolff doesn’t say what he needs to do academically at Milford. It seems though, that he needs more than one core class. If he’s serious, he may find himself in summer school instead trying to get as many core classes improved as he can.

This game is being shown on the NFL Network as well as FSN locally.

Travis is my cousin. Wish him luck everybody! If Pitt offers him, he will be there.

Hearing a lot of good things coming from the first day of Pitt’s Prospect Camp.

Too bad we just don’t need linebackers right now.

Do we have any commitments coming up….seems like it’s been pretty quiet for several months now….?

Anyone see the “hammer” they brought down on the felons across the state?

Watch out! No summer school for you (but be sure to be back in time for football, ::wink::). Oh, and remember they have to pick up a few empty cups to (I can assure you they won’t be doing the real cleaning like getting the piss and cow dung off the floor of the bathrooms). Once again, a joke. Can’t wait for the PSU “judge” to scold them all and give them probation…assuming all charges aren’t quietly dropped before a trial…

I expect a maybe 1 or 2 commitments after the prospect camp and the 7-on-7 camp. Watch out for the extremely large group of Florida players coming up and the possibility of getting one of them.

A lot of good vibes coming from the players/coaches in terms of some of the big time players level of interest in Pitt. Graham and DiLillo where there despite one already being a verbal to Clemson and the other having just had surgery and drove from Scranton to just check out the camp. DiLillo and the Pitt staff are very close. Graham and Byham hung out the whole day and from what I understand is that Graham really likes what Cav wants to do with the TEs (see Todd Heap). Add in players like Baldwin (who appears to be have Pitt clearly in his top 2 with Michigan IMO), Carraway (Pitt made his cut and have family ties), Collier (brother and a close relationship with his family), and Nix (expect a commitment sooner rather than later). A lot of good names that have Pitt either in the lead or among the top 2 or 3.

We got a basketball commitment for 2008 from a New Jersey guard named Ashton Gibbs. Apparently he is a point guard with some size (6’2″). Hopefully we can land Eloy Vargas and finish up another solid recruiting class.

I played with Travis since the 8th grade and he is a great player. He blew up his SR yr after he finally got the chance to play MLB. Played DE his Jr. yr and was not able to play his sophmore yr cause of grades but still came to all the pratices.

As a player there was not a bigger hitter in the WPIAL last yr he blew kids up everygame I had pretty nice view of it as I played LB next to him. His only downfall besides his grades is his 40 time he probley is a high 4.7 or 4.8 but he makes up for that with his great instincts he was near the ball on almost everyplay last season hes an old school LB that loves to heart people.

On his future Travis would go to Pitt in a second if he can make grades he goes to all the games an truley bleeds blue and gold. A great pick up if he can get it together at Milford with his grades best LB i have ever played with or played against in a high school game and I played against Shane Hale one of the so called best LB’s in the country.
