By now you’ve heard that Joe Paterno has decided on a punishment for his football team after some inexcusable behavior: have the entire team clean the stadium after a game day and give all of the money earned to the club teams which use such income to fund their sports. Sounds pretty good, right?

No doubt Paterno is a smart man, at least in some sense. Not smart enough for a few people to see right through his punishment though.

If you peel back the warm and fuzzy blanket, it’s as much a preemptive strike at the University’s Office of Judicial Affairs as it is corporal punishment for the players.

Consider the timing of the announcement. It comes before the Judicial Affairs folks begin their hearings into the incident.

In the pecking order of justice, the legal system is first, then Judicial Affairs and finally, Paterno’s court.

It is also a calculated move to undercut the Judicial Affairs office by taking matters into his own hands and meting out his own punishment. That will make anything Judicial Affairs decides to do look like overkill and further advance the perception that Judicial Affairs has some vendetta against the football team.

Yes, Joe Paterno is smart, but Ron Bracken is just a step ahead.

I love how some are bitching on BSD, comparing Rod Rutherford kicking out a car window with players from PSU getting a gang together to go and assault a group of people. Almost the same thing. Seems like typical PSU logic. Did the car window end up in the hospital? Its a good thing they have to clean up some empty cups, thats almost the same thing as getting bottles broken over your head and your face smashed in. As usual, PSU is a joke.

The worst, most worthless walk-ons will be punished. The best players will not miss a microsecond of practice (Justin King already was let off Bobby-Scott-free). The kid who started it might have to miss the Florida International game, though.

The female students will continue to be expected to bare their naked anuses to the players for wanton penetration whenever they demand it. Their fathers will be honored.

Your obsession with BSD and all things PSU is amusing. Do you guys watch other programs as closely?

Far be it from me to ever defend anything Penn State, but I think it’s important to note that King was let off the hook because he was actually trying to stop the fight.

Assistant District Attorney Steve Sloane said prosecutors had no evidence that King’s entry into the West College Avenue apartment was malicious and no evidence that he hurt anyone or damaged anything. “As a matter of fact, we have evidence to the contrary,” Sloane said. He said King was seen trying to pull people out of the apartment. After the melee ended, Sloane said, King stayed at the scene and tried to apologize to the apartment residents.

He seems like a good kid who ended up in the wrong place, and is unfortunate that his name got dragged into this in the first place.

Joe Paterno should make a deal with Pitt where he gets free hospitalization at UPMC and pitt gets to play them again. UPMC can supply wheelchairs and mental help for the old fart.

I figure its a two for one for pitt.
we keep paterno alive, which ultimately slows down psu football… We also get to beat the hell out of the rednecks again

I can’t help but notice how the stories surrounding this incident suddenly died down when that unsigned letter showed up asking the residents of the appartment not to press charges, but to contact the athletic department instead. Note that the Justin King story about him trying to break up the fight only surfaced after the letter.

Ask yourself this, though, Mr. Utah… if Justin was trying to break up the fight, why was he there in the first place? Every football player who was in that apartment was automatically guilty of breaking and entering by definition, and should be punished in Centre County Court. But Bellefonte let all but two of them go.

Even the most jaded Penn State fan has to smell a little “Nittany Lion Justice” there.

And yes, blahblahblah, I follow Penn State and root against them. What’s wrong with that? Most Penn Staters in town root against Pitt, or doesn’t that bother you so much? It’s just a game, my friend. Lighten up.

Unless, of course, there’s Penn State football players knocking on your door.

These comments are absolutely brilliant!

I have to tell you, I read BSD frequently, but I have to check out this site daily because the comments are so damn hilarious!

I’m truly disappointed when I come out here and don’t see Stuart or Geeman2001 spouting some kind of gibberish.

You guys are really like a scorned girlfriend! Unbelievable! Keep up the good work!

Call us idiots, instead of saying something that makes sense. We’re getting used to it. Go back to the blog that is apologetic for felony assault because the players were drunk. I’m sure most of us had one or two to drink in our day, but didn’t get a gang together to rush a house and commit several felonies. And comparing it to a “bar fight”? Like when you get drunk, get 15 guys together and kick in the front door of a bar and attack people? Its one thing if two people at a party get into an argument/fight in the heat of the moment, but to get a group together with the intention of attacking a group of people is completely different. And who said jocks should be held to a higher standard? WAKE UP – if i commit a felony, I go to jail, and I do lose my job when i don’t show up for work because i’m in jail. Hold them to the SAME standard that us normal people are held to. Too bad thugs at PSU are held to a lower standard. It would take a moron to think that because the players are tough on the field, they can’t seperate a game from reality and should be allowed to be thugs. Like I said the first day this happened, i’m sure the kangaroo court out there will eventually make sure this goes away – it has for most of the felons already.

I wish it were as funny as Mr./Ms. JoPa finds it. First of all, I would agree with the Nit apologists that the most recent incident is probably not all that big a deal. Drunken players fighting with other drunken Nit students is fairly harmless stuff and happens everywhere (as all Nits have taken pains to point out, it happened at a Pitt fraternity a few years back). I’m sure some smartmouth drunk instigated it with the kid who assembled the posse. In my day at Pitt, I saw guys who had a few too many try to get badass with the football players.

But I have a family member associated with a social agency that does women’s advocacy work for rape and domestic abuse issues (and I have a wife and daughter). In that perspective, Paterno’s repeated denigration of rape victims is all too real and unforgivable. Maybe the most glaring was two years back when Bobby Freakin’ Bowden of all people punished one of his players and PATERNO came out and said he was crazy. Basically he has echoed Bobby Knight’s reprehensible comments (they should relax and enjoy it = pretty girl knocks on your door, whaddaya gonna do, etc.). It’s reprehensible that both of those guys still have their jobs. I’m sure that attitude permeates with everyone associated with the progam and school, since he has such influence. Anyone with a daughter should tremble if she expresses interest in going to Penn State.

Ironically enough, I’ve been up there a few times, even considered going there when I was in high school. It’s a nice campus and nobody can really argue that it is a good school in many ways. And nobody can argue that Paterno has had an amazing coaching career, W/L’s considered. But what an abhorrent attitude, and how shameful that an entire institution and its alumni and the media look past this because of their blind hero worship. Pitt is far from innocent either … I’m not thrilled about the retention of Keith Benjamin on the hoops team, for example. Hit a woman, maybe unless she has a gun pointed at you, is intolerable to me.

I await JoPa’s apology …

“Anyone with a daughter should tremble if she expresses interest in going to Penn State.”

Oh my God how over the top is that? I think women do quite well at Penn State. Our women’s sports programs are some of the best in the nation, and they have Joe Paterno to thank for that since he was the athletic director and shaped them into what they are today. Double Wanny’s annual salary, and that’s about how much money Joe Paterno and his wife have donated to the university. His name is on the freakin’ library. How many women have benefited through the various scholarship funds he and his wife have created?

You rudeness is only surpassed by your ignorance.

Comment by blahblahblah 05.25.07 @ 8:49 am

Blahblahblah,
Wanny can’t help that the bulk of his salary is dorected towards Mustache Wax. He has to find something to bide his time during the post season, while wathcing Magnum PI reruns.

Comment by JoePa 05.25.07 @ 10:06 am

Blahblah (appropriate handle), your response speaks volumes. “It’s ok if Paterno’s players rape women, because our sports programs are good.”

Pretty much the same rationalization the people of Germany had for accepting Hitler and the Nazi’s. And that’s not “over the top.”

I’ll say it forever: Society will be better when Paterno mericifully dies.

Comment by geeman2001 05.25.07 @ 10:43 am

JoePa-

How are you going to hate on wannstedt’s ‘stache when JoeyShittyPants looks more like a troll than a human???? Paterno is one of the most alarmingly ugly people on the planet – that’s what will make your daughters tremble. We have a saying down south, and Paterno fits it, UGLY AS SIN!
