Mike Cruz seemed like he was more than excited to play for Pitt when he verbally committed at the beginning of April.

“Pitt’s been my dream school,” Cruz said. “It’s always been my favorite school.”

Don’t be too quick to picture him in a Panthers jersey though, since he’s backed out of his verbal.

Johnstown Bishop McCort junior tight end Mike Cruz has reneged on his verbal commitment to Pitt and will reopen his college recruitment.

“Unfortunately, I did,” Cruz said. “I think I rushed my decision.”

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Cruz was the second player from the Class of 2008 to pick the Panthers. Verbal commitments are non-binding until prospects sign a binding national letter of intent in February.

For more on Cruz, here are other posts about him on Pitt Blather.

What’s up with that?

Comment by Marco 04.22.07 @ 5:15 pm

What an idiot. We don’t need another tight end anyway.

Comment by Omar 04.22.07 @ 9:17 pm

That could be just what he realized as well … at that size, conversion to lineman looks to be his future. That’s probably true wherever he ends up, but some greaseball from another school has probably been sending him 100 handwritten letters each day telling him otherwise.

Cruz said his mother, Martha Bernard, “likes the closed-campus college atmosphere, not the big city” and that “everyone feels that I can go (to a program) way bigger and better” than Pitt.

Cruz said the atmosphere at Pitt’s Blue-Gold Game, which drew a crowd of only 2,103 to Heinz Field on April 14, caused him to reconsider and look at other programs.

“It was kind of an 80-20 thing,” Cruz said, “80 percent wanting to keep my options open and 20 percent seeing that they really don’t have a great fan base.”

OUCH!

I almost can’t argue with him. I wouldn’t want to play for a team that draws 2,000 people to their spring game when Alabama drew 90,000.

Comment by Chris 04.23.07 @ 8:14 am

I don’t want to play in a stadium with 90,000 people if my coach has low credibility and integrity.

But that’s me…

Comment by Ryan M 04.23.07 @ 8:40 am

I would just want to play at a place with huge tradition, fanbase, and premium tang.

Comment by Chris 04.23.07 @ 9:23 am

either way we have a good crop of tight ends. would be nice to get him but we dont want anyone that doesnt want us.

Comment by Rex 04.23.07 @ 9:46 am

Agreed, f him. Also, f any Pitt fan who doesn’t support the team by showing up at the stadium.

Comment by Chris 04.23.07 @ 9:54 am

I totally agree, Chris- especially with the second statement.

Comment by Dan35 04.23.07 @ 10:36 am

Reneging and transferring happens all the time.

This jagoff from MD decommitted from his UMD verbal signed with PSU and now he might transfer back to College Park, MD.

Mr. Cruz obviously has an exceptionally small brain and a very large mouth. He should not have committed and he should stop talking to the media. Not only has he disrespected the coaching staff at Pitt, but now he has also managed to disrespect the fans. The coaches should immediately pull the scholarship offer and move on. It appears Mrs. Cruz has encouraged her son to say stupid things and make a fool of himself. Mission accomplished and may I commend you on a job well done.

Comment by Omar 04.23.07 @ 11:19 am

I think he may have seen how stacked we are at tight end, and realized that he has no chance here.

Comment by Chris 04.23.07 @ 11:22 am

good luck riding the pine at ohio state

Comment by Rex 04.23.07 @ 12:10 pm

With his size he would almost definitely end up playing Tackle anyway.

Comment by Jon in NOVA 04.23.07 @ 12:15 pm

yeah our tight end situation looks good for us and not for recruited TE’s, but Cruz should have kept his mouth shut. They obviously do not know how to deal with the whole recruiting situation(The Cruz Family). I agree with Omar about pulling his scholarship after the show he put on. I don’t blame a kid for backing out of a scholarship but I do blame them for opening their mouth like a child…a 16 or 17 year old football player is not a child. They may not be adults but they should be held accountable for their stupidity. I don’t want more babies on this team. I think we all have had enough of the home sick puppy crap(I have a heart but don’t disrupt the team)..and the whole ego-I want to start or I’m transferring player. What do these kids think?, that because it’s their home state team that they won’t have to fight for their lives just to be third team?
I’m not angry at kids for expecting and dreaming because if you have the talent then it SHOULD be your job to lose, regardless of how many all-Americans are ahead of you. Dreaming is what makes the college game different from the NFL, and why we love the college game so much. But when you open your mouth and bring down a program because their wasn’t enough asses on bleachers then I have a problem. This may not be a big deal to the casual PITT fan but to the hardcore fans like most of us it feels like a stranger bad mouthed our family and we still showed love(Wanny saying we wanted him even after the fact). Sorry if I am ranting and being a bit harsh but I haven’t posted in a while and have some backed up “angry goo”.
Cruz, apologize to the players first and then walk your ass to Akron and compete with your big brother for the back-up tight end job your whole career there. *lights a cigarette and waves*

…..I rant because I love

Comment by Panthoor 04.23.07 @ 12:25 pm

Panthoor, you beat me to it. I don’t care that he changed his mind. It’s his life to live, but for him to take shots at the school/fans (no matter how true the shots are) while he backs out is just a no-class move. The scholarship should be pulled.

Chris, thanks for saying what needs to be said. If Pitt fans want this to be a “big time” program, then Pitt fans have to show up at the stadium on game day. Win or lose, a full house will help recruiting. I can’t stand the “win and I’ll show up” fans. I said this here before (and got pounded for it), but I’m going to say it again: While PSU was enjoying four losing seasons (out of five), they still averaged over 100,000 butts in the seats. Their play clearly removed them from the elite of college football, yet the perception is still there that they are an elite program. Why is that? Could it because their fan base is so strong? I don’t care why it’s strong (such as they have nothing else to do), the fact is their fan base is impressive….on TV, to recruits, and in person if you have ever been there. We don’t even have to sell out…If we could just get 50,000 per game to show up, and have the ones who do show up stay in their seats and watch the damn game, we would be OK. In the alternative, we could just change our home jersey color to the same shade of yellow as the seats at the stadium!

Comment by HbgFrank 04.23.07 @ 12:46 pm

I think hardcore fans like us can do our part by trying to get friends to buy season tickets, but the Pitt athletic department also has to do its part. Twenty bucks should get you a good seat at a Pitt football game, if that was the case it wouldn’t be so hard to get people in their. Pittsburgh is a football town, and people will come support this team, just not for $40 a ticket. To bring a family of 4 that starts to get a little expensive to see a Pitt vs Eastern Michigan football game or a Pitt vs Grambling State game.

You can read what I feel about the whole situation in the above article. Basically to sum it up. Cruz burnt a bridge just like his brother. How he handled the situation of wanting to look around exposes some character issues (committing only to turn around in a only a small time interval to change your mind). Cruz is not the typical-TE mold Pitt wants at the position (no offensive threat. Cruz most likely does not have a Pitt offer anymore. Pitt is better off putting the full press on Graham, Williams, and DiLillo, all who meet what we are looking for at the position.

[…] There has been a little bit of uneasiness about Nix not making any type of commitment, even a soft verbal. I’m not worried yet because no matter what we’ve seen on the field the last two years, we know Wannstedt is a master recruiter and won’t let any player slip through easily. It’s also not uncommon for a young player to want to go through the entire experience (in stead of committing too quickly then dropping out). […]
