According to spokespeople from Penn State, renewing the football rivalry isn’t going to happen anytime soon. PSU’s student newspaper, The Daily Collegian, has a story on the rivalry that made me sick, especially hearing what this Penn State spokesman says.

“Current discussions by the Big Ten regarding the possibility of adding another conference game to the football schedule would limit our ability to schedule out-of-conference games,” he wrote.

Yes, it must be very hard to schedule and fit in all of those games against the Florida International’s and Buffalo’s of the world.

MacCarthy also said an additional football game would be a financial burden.

Yeah, it’s a huge financial burden to have the stadiums full at both schools while local hotels and bars fill up for the weekend. Other than the big wigs at Penn State, everybody else wants to see these games happen.

Borghetti said it is a shame that students at both universities do not know the importance of the rivalry that he “knew and appreciated.”

Some Penn State students said they would like to see a Penn State versus Pittsburgh rivalry reinstated.

Penn State doesn’t even have a real rival right now. They play Michigan State every year for a stupid trophy, but a yearly trophy doesn’t make a game into a rivalry (see: Pitt vs. Cincinnati).

we all know we will never see another pitt-psu game until JoePa (aka Joey ShitPants) is 6 feet under.

Pretty harsh name calling, Rex.

Comment by Reed 04.11.07 @ 10:18 am

is it really name calling when its factual?

F Joe-Pa

Comment by frankinchicago 04.11.07 @ 11:01 am

haha. I cant even hate Joe right now, because i get such a kick out of seeing him injured each week. Hell, he is in the trainers more than any one of his players. No one in the world takes him seriously anymore. Everyone knows that its his assistants that run the team. What idiot would want to finish his career with the public not taking him seriously. I just have to laugh at what a pathetic mess he has become

Comment by adam 04.11.07 @ 11:52 am

As much as I want to see them play again, it’s PSU loss..we have WVU every year which is becoming as good as any rival game in the country not to mention we also have Notre Dame back on the schedule.
Does PSU really think MSU thinks MSU/PSU is their big game…Try Michagan/MSU or even OSU/MSU.
Pitt/PSU will play again in the future, just ain’t going to happen for at least 10 years or so.

Comment by Bill 04.11.07 @ 4:44 pm

It’s pathetic to see Penn State pretend they have a rivalry with Michigan State. What a joke. Because of Joe Pa, Penn State has to pretend that it’s not the biggest football program in the country with no rival. The old man has them by the balls. I think deep down they realize their program loses something by not having an actual rival with real hatred and history rather than the made-up farce they have now.

Comment by Danster 04.11.07 @ 5:12 pm

Why even bother with this. Good luck to PSU, they are only hurting their ability to recruit in WPA and will soon end up on par with Indiana. Just look at the state of their Basketball team.

Comment by Ron 04.11.07 @ 9:30 pm

Hey Danster – a rivalry suggests that there is some level of competition involved. Considering sPitt’s record against Penn State since 1960 is 7-25-1, I would venture to say that the ‘competition’ has been gone for some time, now. If getting the crap beat out of you each year constitutes a rivalry, then Pitt is good for 5 or 6 ‘rivalries” each season.

Comment by JoePa 04.12.07 @ 3:53 pm

Trust me, here guys:
I am a freshman student at PSU (but a Pitt fan) and even I know that it is PSU’s loss by being greedy and not wanting to play Pitt in football. Some of the fans at PSU are truly delusion and irrational by thinking that their team is going to win the National Championship each year. It is truly annoying and turns everyone else off.
No one realizes that the longer that the Nits’ overrated decrepid piece of crap excuse that they try to pass off for a coach is still around, it will actually keep Penn State behind other teams in the Big 11 like OSU and Michigan, as well as possibly Wisconsin, Iowa, Purdue, Michigan State, and even Illinois in the future.

Comment by Nick in State College 04.12.07 @ 11:31 pm

Hey JoePA:

Scoreboard. It still says 0 from the last game we played. Go fuck yourself. Talk shit after you beat us – IN ANY FUCKING SPORT. What kind of moron talks shit after losing ALL of the last games played?

Nick – what are you doing? Transfer.

Comment by Stuart 04.13.07 @ 4:22 am

Nick transfer!

Comment by Chris 04.13.07 @ 10:38 am

Last I checked, sPitt was the team that choked their way through their final 6 games. And, yet, you are talking shit. So, yes Danster. Scoreboard. Next time sPitt beats anyone of consequence, let me know. And even then, you’ll still be playing in an empty stadium, on Thursday nights against the likes of UConn.

Comment by JoePa 04.13.07 @ 1:50 pm

And Nick, if it’s Penn State’s loss that the alleged rivalry not be renewed, why does this issue eat at sPitt fans so much?

Comment by JoePa 04.13.07 @ 2:06 pm

I don’t know, JoePa, if the story appeared in “The Daily Collegian” then there must be a fair number of PSU fans that care a little. It’s probably because Penn State really does not have a true rival. Seriously, who do you think is PSU’s rival? It’s an honest question.

Let’s look at a few facts:
Pitt leads the overall series with WVU by more than 20 games, and although they’ve been dominated recently, the last 10 years has been 6-4 WVU. I think that Pitt-WVU is better than any rivalry that PSU has.

As for PSU, sure, they’re one of the better teams in the Big Ten, but the “Land-Grant game” is honestly one the biggest jokes I’ve ever seen, it’s very competitive it’s just not a rivalry, I’m sorry.

PSU v. Michigan has Michigan winning the last 9 meetings, so that hasn’t been good, and not to mention that Lloyd Carr is 9-3 all time against Paterno.

PSU v. Ohio State has OSU with a 7-0 record at the Horseshoe, and Paterno is 7-11 all time against OSU.

Those don’t appear to be the definition of a ‘ competitive rivalry’ either. Sure, the renewal of the rivalry may help Pitt more, but PSU needs a rival if they are to be taken seriously on a big stage eventually.

Also, I think that even when Pitt’s been real bad over the last couple of years, a hypothetical Pitt-PSU game would have been a decent game, even at Penn State, PSU would have probably won, but it wouldn’t have been a blowout with PSU’s subpar offense. Pitt is getting better recruits, and I think the gap will close over the next few years, and the rivaly will be renewed. I just don’t like it when PSU fans act like they are just miles ahead of Pitt in everything (I should mention the PSU basketball team here, just as one example).

And lastly, let’s keep in mind that three teams that Penn State lost to (Notre Dame, Michigan, and Ohio State) ALL got utterly obliterated and embarrassed in BCS bowl games. In my opinion, PSU fans should cringe just at the thoughts of them having to face the likes of Florida, LSU, or USC from last year. But hey, time will tell…let’s see what’s going to happen this year…I think both teams might have improved overall.

Comment by Nick in State College 04.13.07 @ 6:09 pm

As fans, I’m sure there are a number of people who would like to see the series renewed. But the desire for such a series is fairly one-sided.

I still don’t see how a singular “rivalry” is a prerequisite to to validate a program. Take Rutgers, for instance. Who is their “rival”? A lack of a rival hasn’t hindered the improvement of their program.

In fact, I wouldn’t have considered Pitt a rival to Miami, yet that series assisted in Pitt’s recruiting efforts in Florida. How many of those guys came north to Pitt simply because they were scorned by “The U”?

I just don’t understand your logic that Penn State, as a program, requires a “rival” in order to be “taken seriously”. Taken seriously by whom?

By your logic, Pitt has no rival, either. Does that mean Pitt is taken less seriously “on a big stage”

I think the bottom line is that it makes no sense for Penn State to play Pitt in a 1 for 1. They can schedule anybody to play a home-and-done series (FIU or Buffalo) and then play in a 1 for 1 series with a team like Notre Dame or Nebraska once a year. Moreover, those games would end up being ABC prime time games. That sounds, to me, like a more serious game than an ESPNU broadcast of PSU/Pitt.

Comment by JoePa 04.14.07 @ 4:17 pm

I agree, while it is rather strange that PSU has to rival, its really a geography thing and your comment about PSU needing one to be taken seriously is one of the dumbest things ive ever read. I didn’t hear any pollsters say “well, i want to rank them #3 in the nation this year, but they dont have a REAL rival and I can’t take them seriously.”

They are developing a rivalry with OSU, while its no OSU-UM, most rivalries aren’t. While it would be great to play Pitt, the through of having to go to that stupid city, play on a thursday night in a pro stadium with 12,000 fans in it just doesn’t appeal to anyone. Like was mentioned earlier, i’d just assume play Nebraska, Miami, ND, Alabama and so on…you know, a team that doesn’t go 6-6 and still not get invited to a bowl game…now that is something to be proud of.

Who wants a wanstash ride?

Comment by JoePa 05.16.07 @ 2:50 pm

I want to sing you all a song:

(to the tune of ‘if you’re happy and you know it’)

IF YOU CAN’T GO TO COLLEGE, GO TO PITT

IF YOU CAN’T GO TO COLLEGE, GO TO PITT!

IF YOU CAN’T GO TO COLLEGE, IF YOU CAN’T GO TO COLLEGE, IF YOU CAN’T GO TO COLLEGE, GO TO PITT!!!

Comment by JoePa 05.17.07 @ 5:07 pm

All I know is that PSU has been good for the last two years, while Pitt has not. When before this time Pitt always was better than PSU, it just happens that the tide has changed. PSU holds nothing over Pitt in the sports world. Pitt is a great college, PSU has a nicer campus…but in sports PITT is if not as good as or even better than PSU. Oh and to help fix the basketball problem in PSU, recruit some black kids…Hail To Pitt

Comment by Mike 07.18.07 @ 5:49 pm

Doesn’t anybody get that penn state fills their stadium no matter who they play when Shitt is exactly the opposite. If penn state can have FIU and Buffalo play at state college with penn state getting the profits(and the win) we don’t mind not playing Shitt. Pitt fans have to swallow their pride and take the 2-1 deal if they want to play us so bad. penn state is 25-7-1 against pitt since 1960

Comment by kkells 08.13.07 @ 6:51 pm

I second the above….last few times I’ve been at Pitt, the stadium is less than half full. In addition, the Pitt administration took advantage of PSU fans the last time we played and made everyone buy multi-game packages just to see the game. It’s not as one-sided at Pitt fans make the rivalry seem…..

Comment by Tim 10.11.07 @ 10:25 pm

It is a shame that the rivalry can not be continued. As much as it should be, it will never happen till JO PA is gone. I am a loyal WVU fan, but also cheer for PITT and Penn St. Growing up in Western PA., that game was part of the fall season. Maybe they legislators need to step in like they did to see Marshall/WVU play. I guess Temple, Akron, and Buffalo A&M will remain on the schedule

Comment by bernie 01.21.08 @ 7:02 pm

Love the loyality of Joe and the dedication. He needs to get over the bad blood of the Major era in the Burg and the damage done by the good old southern boys.

The Orange, Mountaineers, and especially the Panthers would great additions to the schedule.

Lighten up Joe!!

Stop playing the MAC and lesser programs. If your the BIG 10 power, play a better non conference schedule.
