Game, Set, and Match

Filed under: Basketball — Dennis @ 12:13 am

There you go everyone, the end of the season. There will be plenty of time to analyze everything and I’m sure we’ll do that to the fullest extent.

I’m way too frustrated to put together a post in a coherent state of mind that doesn’t involve ripping the team to pieces. I’ll wait and think it out and hopefully that ticking time bomb inside of me will be defused after some sleep.

Here, I’ll do it for you. They should call us the Pittsburgh 10%er’s. That’s right. O and 4 in sweet sixteen and 1 and an6 in Big East Championships. I am sick of hearing about the Pittsburgh system and players who fit the Pittsburgh team mold. Go out and get a player who doesn’t screw up the fundamental like hitting ft’s and layups. Also, try getting a blue chipper for a change instead of complimentary players.

I am sorry for this rant. I am drank, angry, and sick of this shit.

listen at least we’re guaranteed one of our upcoming recruits (blair this year, nasir robinson next) will have actually won something meaningful by the time they get here. someone’s going to learn how to win the big games.

Goodbye Gray. Good luck in Europe!!

Comment by tray 03.23.07 @ 12:57 am

I want to add that I think it is ridiculous that Howland and Dixon won’t schedule games against each other.

Comment by TMGPanther 03.23.07 @ 1:05 am

I’m druink….I’m angry…but I’m not going to bash these guys into the ground at Pitt Blather….

I remember watching Graves as a Freshman, when he missed the 3 pointer at the end of regulation during the regular season to tie the game, at UCONN, and Dixon ran out onto the court and said something to the likes of “dont worry, you wont miss the shot again in the future.”

Well now graves. gray, and others are gone. I can say I enjoyed their time at Pitt, and enjoyed the effort they gave.

I wish them all the best of luck in the future.

Hopefully we can get over the hump in the next 4 years. Hail to Pitt

Shit. Piss. Fuck.

There, I said it. Now it’s outta my system.

Having said that, and having been grossly disappointed tonight, let me just say this: Jamie Dixon is a good coach and is only getting better. My fellow Yinzers need to realize that and stop being so bitter. This guy’s a keeper ,and while I’m disapppointed that there’s a “glass cieling” vis-a-vis the Sweet, I’m still happy that we kept this guy as our coach. We’ve had a solid recruiting year in roundball as well as football and we have a good coach. Also, we’ve made the NCAAs six years running and made it to the Sweet 16 half of that time. I’m not saying we ought to be satisfied with just that or that we should accecpt mediocirty. What I am saying is that we’ve achieved a fair level national competitiveness in under a decade. Take the long view and realize that this could only be the beginning.

And besides, the Jayhawks are gonna hand UCLA their ass, so at least we can bask in the schadenfreude of a gaggle of SoCal solipsists getting their asses handed to them by a team from “flyover coutnrty.” Heh. And to think I’d never root for a “Red State” like this. 😛

Comment by Shawn 03.23.07 @ 1:42 am

nice rant shawn. thanks for the sour grapes but i’ll pass. we beat you guys tonight with solid defense and on top of that your boys couldn’t throw a pea in the ocean. i respect the pitt team for all they’ve done and congratulate them for a great season, and now you piss on ucla and try to represent the pitt fan base with your classless comments. i’ll have fun seeing my bruins put the clamps on rush and the rest of the jayhawks. go have a beer and chill out. btw, this is what it feels like to reach the elite 8 for a second straight year.

Comment by Joe 03.23.07 @ 2:34 am

Like I said in the other thread, we fought the good fight, it just didn’t work out.

I’m not going to rip our seniors, now’s not the time for it.

Best of luck to Aaron, Levon, and Antonio. I enjoyed watching you guys.

Fuck it, 06-07 is in the past. We STILL have a championship to win someday.

HAIL TO PITT!!!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 03.23.07 @ 3:31 am

Joe Pitt defeated themselves tonight just as much as UCLA did. The Panthers put up 55 shots tonight, and only made 20 of them. UCLA only got the ball off 42 times, and they made 18 of those. Where was the game won? Pitt went 8 of 14 at the foul line, while UCLA put in 23 of 26. Even Mata made both his free throws, and he’s a 37% shooter.

You’d better hope the Bruins don’t give Kansas 55 shots, or some Jayhawks fans might be coming over to a Bruins blog to rub it in YOUR face. 😛

i absolutely LOVE this – yet ANOTHER Pitt CHOKE!!! can never win the big game – basketball or football. Doesn’t matter the sport – they don’t show up when needed!! ALL HAIL HOWLAND!!

See ya LOOSERS!!! Figure out now who will knock you out next year – cause ITS GONNA HAPPEN!!!

ALL HAIL HOWLAND!!! ALL HAIL HOWLAND!! ALL HAIL HOWLAND!!

Comment by UCLASPORTSGOD 03.23.07 @ 6:27 am

I wont even address the above jackass. The last thing I would be doing if Pitt had won would be gloating on a ucla blog. Honestly not too much to brag about. Pitt played like a junior high team and had their usual free throw performance. UCLA suddenly discovered how to shoot foul shots. I was just amazed how such a veteran team could just continuously throw the ball away and look so sloppy at this point of the season????? And as usual, nobody steps up in the big game. And so the disappointments continue. Its funny, I got my football season ticket renewal form yesterday…..I actually started laughing when I saw it…then I promptly threw it in the garbage. Next year is going to be a long year for both football and basketball. We should all start drinking right now to prepare to numb the pain that is coming.

Comment by Rex 03.23.07 @ 7:27 am

What an absolutely boring and pathetic showing, not as bad as the GT game, but nothing I want to remember, chalk it up with the other depressing Sweet 16 performances….if you can’t make layups or shots two feet from the basket you don’t deserve to win. I counted at least 10 shots that we missed that were gimmies….that my friends is 20 points…we lost because we were intimitated by UCLA and never responded, never took it to them physically….nothing else to say

Comment by Marco 03.23.07 @ 8:01 am

Dokish and followers simply do not appreciate what an average coach Dixon is and assistants are sub-par. There are 35 better Div 1 staffs, Consider poor schemes, lack of inside picks, failure to adjust in games, failure to switch to zone defense when so necessary, failure to teach foul shooting, etc. Another problem never addressed is our AD Long is strictly minor league.

i never in a million years thought i would say this but i will…..i will miss antonio graves and what he brought to this team….down the stretch, the last 10 or so games, he was incredible…..thanks antonio…..

i feel bad for aaron….he probably lost $2-3 million dollars coming back this season…..and what did he get for it……a couple 2nd place big east finishes and an all big east spot (although who doesnt get one of those)…he took a big risk, and its most likely not going to pay off…..i hope he enjoyed his senior yr of college……but at least he took a chance…thanks aaron……

to kendall – im just happy i dont have to hear about the 40 pts, the piano lessons, and the rodman comparisons anymore…..i hope you enjoyed f’ing half the broads in the burgh…….

it was another fun yr, disappointing at the end, but who isnt disappointed besides the nat’l champs……gotta enjoy what got you here……

“UCLASPORTSGOD” you’re clearly just a WVU or PSU fan pretending to be a UCLA fan.

1) No UCLA fan really cares about Pitt enough to be gleeful that they lost a game (in the sweet sixteen remember).
2) They don’t see enough Pitt basketball or football games on the West Coast to know how often we choke.
3) A UCLA fan is over the idea of the head coach being Howland. Someone from around Pittsburgh isn’t. If OSU wins a game, the fans don’t say “All hail Matta”. It makes me think you’re a Paterno cultist.
4) Google shows no hits for “UCLASPORTSGOD” so you obviously just made that up and it sounds retarded anyway.
5) And speaking of retarded, you can’t even spell “loser”. So it’s clear you live someplace where when you look out the window you see a cow’s ass.

Sorry about not making it to the tournament this year though, whoever you are.

Comment by bill 03.23.07 @ 8:38 am

Dixon is in over his head. Some Pitt fans, for whatever reason, are not capable of seeing that this Pitt team is EXTREMELY talented. We deserved better.

Now is the time we really need to start looking at him realistically. He was handed a top program and has consistantly underachieved with it. How many good NCAA wins do we have with Dixon? One? Wisconson? I know we’ve been busted out by teams like Bradley and Pacific but have we ever beaten a team we were the underdog against? Is there one person who really thinks we would have such an awfull NCAA track record with Howland? Granted there is only one Howland but, unfortunatly for us, there is only one Dixon too.

BIGGS WITH 4 MINUTES LEFT?!?!? REALLY?!?!? AFTER NOT PLAYING THE ENTIRE GAME?!?!?

kendall 0-4 senior leadership?

Comment by alco fan 03.23.07 @ 9:03 am

At least with this game, I just can’t put it on the coaching staff. The reason Pitt lost was simple. They can’t shoot. Gray may be a great passer but he can’t shoot. And neither could the rest of the team last night. They can’t shoot free throws, they can’t make the close put-backs, and they don’t regularly shoot the three well. I haven’t seen the stats, but generally I though Pitt played better D than UCLA last night. I thought they out rebounded UCLA by a significant margin. UCLA left guys (particularly our bigs) open underneath all night. This was a very, very winnable game if not for the shooting.

Comment by frankinchicago 03.23.07 @ 9:04 am

I still can’t get over the number of missed shots within 2-3 ft. That’s inexcusable. Ask Acie Law IV about it; his spectacular season is going to be marred by one missed lay-up.

As poor as our offensive game was, that was still a winnable game. Really makes you wonder what would happen if we ever got running on all cylinders this season.

Oh well, time to move on. We’ve got Schenley and Aliquippa about to bring home state titles.

I dont know how some of you are balming this on coaching, did any of you actually watch the game? Pitt was 10 of 30 in the second half from the field and the real killer was free throw shooting, we were 8 of 14 while ucla went 23-26. And how can we forget all the missed layups – is that the coaches fault? The coaches dont shoot the ball my friends. I am not saying Dixon doesnt deserve some blame but sometimes you just have to look at the reality. I agree with someone else who said we looked intimidated. And once again the refs didnt seem to exactly be doing Pitt any favors.

Comment by Rex 03.23.07 @ 10:01 am

Investing so much emotion into these games has really affected my ability to sleep at night. In any event, I would like to thank the Pitt players and fans for their hard work and efforts this season. Obviously, we’d like to see them advance a little further but quite frankly, it wasn’t their destiny. GO PITT and f*** UCLA! Hahaha…i had to get that in…

Comment by MoE 03.23.07 @ 10:23 am

I thought Pitt had a hell of a season. Dixon is a pretty good coach. Basically, he won with a bunch of players who weren’t exactly blue chippers. Where is must improve is in his recruiting. I heard on the radio that Roy Williams schedules early morning practices so he can fly out afterwards to recruit the top prospects in person. If Dixon can’t land a blue chipper the program will never make it to the next level

A word of caution, to the Dixon haters. Be careful what you wish for. Look at the Pitt football program and the steps backward it has taken and yes the football program has taken steps backward.

Comment by rob 03.23.07 @ 10:23 am

tough game, but we lost to a better team so it’s not as hard to swallow as the bradley and pacific games. next year we should be good if young’s knees hold up, he will be a beast when given big minutes. cook, fields etc have more experience now. plus, the dejuan blair era begins.

question: who will replace gray? are austin wallace, casin diggs, etc. any good ?

Comment by sid 03.23.07 @ 10:26 am

Just want to say, as frustrating as that game was – man, UCLA can guard and trap. Every time someone seemed open, there were three guys that appeared out of thin air. Yes, Pitt shot poorly, but that UCLA defense showed how it was done. Seriously, look how aggressive that scheme was. I know we missed a lot of close in looks, but those shots look a lot easier on TV than they are when the UCLA guys are swarming.

I am just so frustrated considering the amount of TOs we generated and the fact that we got the ball inside where we wanted it, yet, we couldn’t convert.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Comment by RyanSilverSpring 03.23.07 @ 10:32 am

This season has been kind of a mystery. Looking back though, it appears that we beat all of the teams that we were clearly better than (at that time), we lost to all of the teams that were better than us, and we split with the teams that seemed to be at about our caliber. Although you hope that you can pull together a great game and beat a better team that doesn’t always happen. So our season kind of seems to be exactly the way it was meant to me.

I know people want to pile on Gray, but in the bigger view he was very effective in helping us win. But boy when he underachieved we were in trouble.

The one thing that kept gnawing at me all year was that our guards just do not seem to penetrate as much as you would hope. It seemed in many games, like last night’s, it was do or die from the perimeter. I wondered why UCLA had so few fouls, but I think you have to take it at them and we tend not to.

I know everyone wants a great shooter and a top recruit, but I am pretty sure they don’t have those things readily available at the Dollar Store that often. Its not like every other team except Pitt gets those guys either.

Acie Law, Kevin Durant, Alando Tucker and Dominic James are all watching the NCAAs on TV just like Levon Kendall.

I’m trying to stay positive because I love Pitt basketball.

I do not know where we stand for next year, but my gut tells me that we will be floating around the bubble.

Comment by panther84 03.23.07 @ 10:34 am

it will be interesting to see what dixon does next yr…will blair start? diggs looks like he’ll step into gray’s shoes…..it looks like fields cook and young will all start which means our defensive prowess will be a thing of the past….will benjamin start at the 2 so that we some defense…id rather see that with ramon and blair coming off the bench….should be interesting to see if dixon can adjust to a team that might be better running and gunning then in the half court…….

Comment by schoe 03.23.07 @ 10:37 am

We had 15 more shots than them and lose. That says it all.We cant shoot when it counts(choking) Fields has a couple of years to get better. His shooting is awlful. He completely miss the rim from top of the key. My 11yr old at least hits the rim. Also they need the Shot Doctor to come in and teach foul shooting. Winning one game more because of better foul shooting could be that game that gets us over the hump. Also concerning GRAY if he was a first round pick last year he should have left. His was a classic case of leaving when they “Show you the Money” He will not be picked by any NBA team.He will be in Europe with Carl or playing with the Explosion with Pittsnogle. Sorry AAron you blew it and your so called advisors should be taken out an shot.

Comment by Buzz 03.23.07 @ 10:42 am

One of the brightest spots for me last night was Ramon. He had a few dumb turnovers, but who didn’t. But he played excellent D and he finally seemed to do the little extra things he needed to get good looks from 3. Ramon may not be that fast, but if he can learn to use the fake pump on the perimeter to create more opportunities for penetration and if the team can work to set more good screens to get him open looks, I think he can average 13-15 pts/game next year.

As for Dixon, even with the mystery insertion of Biggs into the game in the last 4 minutes, his in-game coaching seemed to improve late in the season.

But these Pitt teams have got to develop better game-time intensity and confidence. And that has to come from the top. There is no way in hell anybody from UCLA’s front court should intimidate anybody on our team. Mata? Mhba a Moute or however the fuck you say/spell his name? Are you kidding me? I played with tougher guys on the playgrounds in the shady parts of Alexandria, Va. I found that to be terribly disappointing.

Next year, somebody, somehow, needs to instill real intensity and confidence in this team. Bring in Jaron Brown for a few practices. I’m sure he could use the work.

’til then, any wagers on how many 300-yard+ rushing games the Pitt D gives up this coming season?

Comment by Carmen 03.23.07 @ 11:31 am

J-Maile someone you can count on to always be there with the positive spin after a loss.

Three questions J-maile.

1. Since you feel this team had tons of talent, who do you see on this past year’s roster starting in the NBA?

2. Since you dislike the coach and half the players why do you follow the team so closely? It seems that you think they should win every game and when they don’t you want to get rid of or fire anyone that won’t meet your expectations. That has to be rough to expect no loses in any season since it hasn’t happened for any team since 1976.

3. Since you feel Dixon is to blame for this loss tell us who would you suggest (other then yourself) that Pitt bring in to coach this team? Don’t say Sean Miller I am sure you would have killed him for not fouling in the Ohio State game with a 3 point lead and under 10 seconds left on the clock.

Comment by Tony In Harrisburg 03.23.07 @ 11:40 am

On a great night of basketball, it is typical that Pitt was involved in the worst game of the night!!! What peeves me the most is that I had to sit and watch us lose to a team with the Captain of the All-Ugly team, Lorenzo Mata. Mata plays like basketball like a retarded kid on speed.

Comment by Jeremy 03.23.07 @ 12:29 pm

It’s all been said above, you could have the combination of all the greatest BB coaches ever to coach in one coach, but if you miss more than a dozen shots from under the basket in a Sweet 16 game, you are not going to win. Combine that with an opponent that hit 23 of 26 FT, and I’m surprised the score was as close as it was. It was a fun season, I’d rather have ours than WVU’s or PSU’s. I too really loved watching Graves play over the course of this season. Gray, Kendall, and Graves had a great four year run. Let’s hope that next years seniors and beyond will move the program to another level. P—I—T—T P-I-T-T LETS GO PITT!

Comment by HbgFrank 03.23.07 @ 12:32 pm

Inna my country, they would love Kendall and Gray in the professional league. Graves, not so much.

Comment by my nameh Borat 03.23.07 @ 12:55 pm

I think we were a bit intimidated – Afflallo could drive and get fouls, we shied away from contact – Gray didn’t even get to the line.

Biggs being in, I think, had everything to do with Ramon and Fields hitting the late 3s – they pulled Gray out to set the screens and we finally got open, and Biggs was sitting in the paint. Should have thought of that idea a lot sooner.

Comment by Kevin 03.23.07 @ 12:59 pm

1. Since you feel this team had tons of talent, who do you see on this past year’s roster starting in the NBA?

Is that what qualifies a team to be talented in this era of college basketball? Correct me if I’m wrong but Kevin Pittsnogle was a hell of a college player as was Marcus Hatten, Khalid El-Amin, and any number of All-Big East performers you’ve never heard of. Hell, there are guys who are college all-americans (including GRAY!) who won’t ever start for an NBA team. How many players, exactly, on UCLA, SIU, Butler, Tennessee, Texas AM, and Memphis COMBINED are going to ever START in the NBA? 3? 4? You need some edumacation about the college game, son.

2. Since you dislike the coach and half the players why do you follow the team so closely? It seems that you think they should win every game and when they don’t you want to get rid of or fire anyone that won’t meet your expectations. That has to be rough to expect no loses in any season since it hasn’t happened for any team since 1976.

I love Pitt and, unlike you, was actually watching them when they couldn’t even make the NIT. And most of the players, through the years, I’ve supported. Dixon just has an amazing inability to figure out personal. From Yuri D, to Krauser, to Kendall, I can’t think of a coach we’ve had in the last 25 years who can’t figure out who should and should not be on the court in the way Dixon can’t.

If everyone had your mindset, we’d have Ralph Willard right now and still wouldn’t be making the NCAAs. When something doesn’t work, you change it. Simple as that. That’s how we got Howland dummy.

I actually would give Dixon another year. He has improved and does one thing I really like: The team does not take many “bad” shots. Unfortunatly, we always play scared and choke up in big games. He mishandles personel on a grand level, and makes decisions like the Biggs subsitution that seemingly have no ryme or reason to them that literally no one in the world could explain beyond sheer panic and incompetance.

I can’t say I’m familiar enough with Xavier to say that Miller is a good candidate. Belein is probably unrealistic because of the buyout and a guy like Bzdelik probably wouldn’t leave Air Force. But if I were the AD I would seriously start looking around. Open up talks with Prosser again, look into a guy like Grgurich and see if he’d come back to college. Let’s put it this way, I’d rather have Everheart right now.

Comment by J-Maile 03.23.07 @ 12:59 pm

Just watched the replay and was struck by a number of things.

In the first half Antonio and Sam were dribble penetrating and getting fouled. Granted we did not convert 100% of those, but we had their bigs in early foul trouble. In the second half Graves did not seem to want to drive and we had very few dribble penetrations. Levance had one early but turned the ball over.

The in close misses, I think, were as much the UCLA defenders altering shots as us just blowing them. Looking at the tape again, some of the “easy” lay ups weren’t all that easy due to guys rushing because of pressure.

I was also struck by the absolute number of open looks we had, particularly in the first half in which we took what appeared to be great shots but missed. Ugggh!!!!

Why was the game even sort of close? Sam Young. To me he was the most valuable guy for Pitt. Sam got a lot of baskets when it looked like UCLA was going to just run away with it. Sam always seemed to get the basket to bring it back to 7 or 5 or whatever. Nice job.

Antonio played nicely in the first half but not as well in the second half.

Levon Kendall had probably his worst game ever. I like Levon but he was atrocious.

Mike Cook had some early points but overall he was just a mess all night.

Interesting early on UCLA had more fouls and Howland was barking hard at the refs. Pitt had some early ticky tack fouls and Dixon seemed to smirk at the refs. The second half Howland got all the calls and Pitt not many. It appeared as if Howland did a better job getting at the refs than Dixon did.

Notice at the end of the first half the referee was physically moving Dixon off of the floor at least twice while play was going on. Not sure I had ever seen that before.

Comment by Panther84 03.23.07 @ 1:01 pm

Don’t get down on Dixon, he’s a good coach. I think Howland and Dixon have a very similar systems that really focus on defense and the TEAM. Even though Afflalo or Gray don’t have a good night, the system allows the team to still succeed. As a result, Pitt and UCLA are very good fundamentally. Thats on the coach, and Dixon and Howland’s abilities to instill that perspective in the kids is what makes them good coaches. The offense is not “attractive” because there is a lack of blue chip recruits and also becuase it is not necessary to be successful. I think Dixon is a good coach; not too sure whether he is a good recruiter. The recruiting comes with establishing a portfolio of success, and that comes with time and hardwork. I consider Pitt to be a top level program now, and the desire to play for Pitt is being instilled in the kids that will be playing ball in the future. Just have some confidence in Dixon.

Comment by opinion 03.23.07 @ 1:16 pm

i think pitt has great potential for next season. sam young will mature. dejuan blair arrives on campus. we get to see the debut of the mythical gilbert brown. i’ve seen wannamaker play once or twice here in philly, and he’s definitely a solid player. certainly our inside presence will not be there, but that’s something that was easily overcome in the pre-Gray years (Lett was a beast inside for being so undersized…well, vertically).

“Open up talks with Prosser again”

Really??? The guy has won about 8 games the last two years in the ACC and failed to make the NCAA or NIT.

Not saying he isn’t a good coach because he had some good years with Wake and before, but I’ll keep Dixon and the 25-30 wins per season and the NCAA tourney every here. Not saying Dixon is the best coach out there, but he is doing a pretty darn good job and it is at least nice being able to follow Pitt in the NCAAs, which never occured when I went to school at Pitt (Willard years).

Ditto, with an empahsis on, “Take the long view and realize that this could only be the beginning.”

It is so hard to accept that Pitt’s recent run of success has been relatively short. How long did it take UCON, Cuse, GU, UF, and others to get a firm deep run foundation laid? He** before Coach K arrived at Duke, they were an afterthought!

You guys should be proud of the over-achieving players of this year’s squad and the others in the BH/JD era. Not many great recuits there but look at the success.

“If you build it they will come,” and better recruits will come. The foundation that has been laid is solid. JD IS a good coach. You cannot expect him to do miracles with the talent he has.

I for one, tip my hat to the players and Coach D. They give their all, you can’t expect more, BUT you can hope for more to come in the future.

Comment by Kenny 03.23.07 @ 1:39 pm

Why has it been years and years since Pitt has had a guard or forward who can consistantly hit an outside shot? A pure shooter. I will take a defensive “liability” or a decline in “athleticism” for someone who can spot up and stroke it from the outside.
Howland, Dixon, Williard, Evans, Chipman … whoever. It is the same story. They beat who they should beat and they lose when they should lose. The also lose most pick em’ games. On the bright side, at least we are looking at a program such as Penn State.

They did a nice job this year. Losing stinks no matter how or when it happens.

Comment by Mauler 03.23.07 @ 1:46 pm

To Tony in Harrisburg: I came on this site to get some perspective from “real” Pitt fans on what happened to their team. I got on your site because this is the internet is FREE and doesn’t have a front door. I’m not an arrogant winner, notice I didn’t rub anything in your face. I actually PRAISED your team but also had something for those who wished ill will on my team.

Nobody likes an arrogant winner? Nobody likes it when you talk shit behind their back. Go onto a UCLA blog and say it where the fans can see it.

UCLA 61
KU 54

thanks for playing guys! but it is time for you to sit back and watch the big boys play, now.

enjoy!

Comment by LuiDAbruin 03.23.07 @ 3:22 pm

“btw, this is what it feels like to reach the elite 8 for a second straight year.”

Thanks for not rubbing it in our faces Joe, we really appreciate that. What are you trying to accomplish on here anyway? You’re on a blog talking to a bunch of fans that just watched their team play poorly and lose – do you think you’re going to have a worthwhile discussion with us? Go away, enjoy the rest of your team’s games. Take LuiDaAbruin along with you – as much as we want to see his prediction of the UCLA/KU game, I think this Pitt blog would be better off without him.

Comment by Matt O 03.23.07 @ 4:15 pm

Joe, LuiDAbruin, on a serious note, how do you think KU and UCLA match up? I’m not that familiar with KU’s style of play. What I saw from UCLA/PITT was two teams that looked tired from a long season of agressive play.

Comment by HbgFrank 03.23.07 @ 4:27 pm

Again, this is a Pitt blog – 99.9% of us do not care to hear about how KU and UCLA match up. Spare us please…

Comment by Matt O 03.23.07 @ 4:35 pm

yeah! im out.
time to move on. i will see you guys in the future. i do home UCLA and pitt would schedule each other in the regular season. some of the best trash talk in a while.
anyways, i do wish Pitt luck next year.

time to move on to KU blogs

You know the reason Tubby exited UK, the primary reason is that he has failed in recruiting. Those at UK expect to get great recruits. Pitt got to 3 Sweet 16s in 6 years without great recruits.

Just think how Pitt will fare with better recruits…..

Comment by Kenny 03.23.07 @ 4:59 pm

I’m sure they’ll be happy to have you Lui.

Comment by Matt O 03.23.07 @ 5:01 pm

I think the main point of disagreement is how much of Pitt’s “success” which, let’s be honest, we have been no better than SIU the last 6 years, has come because of Dixon and how much is him reaping the benefits of what Howland built. To me, the answer is pretty clear.

Comment by J-Maile 03.23.07 @ 5:06 pm

“i respect the pitt team for all they’ve done and congratulate them for a great season, and now you piss on ucla and try to represent the pitt fan base with your classless comments.”

Oh, tsk, tsk, those Pitt fans! Really!

Joe’s eithier 1.) being sanctimonious, or 2.) really is a thin-skinned little weeny, or 3.) a bit of both.

Sorry if you don’t like what we’ve said post-game but hey, that’s venting. And as venting goes my comments were fairly mild. I mean, what did you expect? It’s an East Coast league, the attitude starts to permeate the atmosphere PDQ. And if you think this is all too much, I’m guessing it’s in your best interest to stay away from any Jayhawkers. Given their fan base and loyalty, I’m guessing you’d almost literally melt from flaming you’d get if you get too uppity whith them.

As for us, well, if you don’t like it, don’t come back.

Oh wait, you already did. *snicker*

Guess Bob Crane wasn’t the only one on the West Coast w/a masochistic streak.

Comment by Shawn 03.23.07 @ 5:17 pm

bill, sorry about the spelling – not too bad for being drunk and CELEBRATING you LOSER, there is that better.
Not a WVU or PSU fan, just tell the last BIG game you guys won – a sports fan know that you guys suck when you have to play somebody.
also, thanks man, my team STILL is PLAYING and yours (yet again) isn’t!!! Can’t change that!!
Why don’t you google and find out when your next game is, i know when ucla plays……

Comment by UCLASPORTSGOD 03.23.07 @ 5:47 pm

What position do you play on the UCLA’s team?

Comment by J-Maile 03.23.07 @ 6:02 pm

The only “playing” UCLASPORTSGOD is doing is with himself…and probably plenty of it!

Comment by HbgFrank 03.23.07 @ 7:35 pm

ooooh frank, a little jealous or sour grapes???

Comment by UCLASPORTSGOD 03.23.07 @ 7:57 pm

Has SIU reached 3 Sweet 16s in 6 years? NO. Pitt has been better than them. As for Dixon reaping the benefits of what Howland built, there is such a thing as maintanence.

If Howland was here the last 4 years would he have done any better than Jamie? Would he have had better recruits than Jamie? The answer to these two questions is most likely NO.

Comment by Kenny 03.23.07 @ 8:34 pm

That’s insane. Howland took the worst job in the BE and built the team into a powerhouse. He then took UCLA who was in decline and has them rolling. There is no logic to what you are saying. There are many, many, many, reasons to believe the team would have done better with Howland and that Dixon is purely coat-tail riding so far.

Comment by J-Maile 03.24.07 @ 4:17 pm

“That’s insane.”
No it is rather reasonable.

“Howland took the worst job in the BE and built the team into a powerhouse.”
Powerhouse? Getting to the sweet 16 and no farther is not a powerhouse. When you are a powerhouse you get great recruits…..Pitt did not do it under Howland and it has not happened yet with Dixon.

“ He then took UCLA who was in decline and has them rolling.” In decline coaching wise perhaps with Lavas but not with recruits……2nd season NCAA, 3rd season Final Game, 4th season Final Four and perhaps more. How did he do it there and not at Pitt. Great, atheltic, recruits plain and simple. And some of those recruits were there when he arrived. Recruits want to go to a powerhouse you know. If it was just his coaching why did he not do it at Pitt…you know he is such a great coach!

“There is no logic to what you are saying.” Evidently not to you but your logic is evident for all to see…….You think Dixon sucks and is an average coach at best.

“There are many, many, many, reasons to believe the team would have done better with Howland” PLEASE TELL US ALL these many, many, many reaons. How the he** would he have made the players that were on this year’s team overcome their athletic/talent defeciencies and be the supposed powerhouse you say? Please tell us how with Ben the team would have dusted GU in the BE championship, never let VCU come back, and beat UCLA.

“ and that Dixon is purely coat-tail riding so far.” Like I said you think Dixon is a bad coach and that he sucks.
