A nasty paper cut is going to make typing this take twice as long as it should, but the news of celebrity sightings at the Pete have to be mentioned. Monday’s game saw Dallas Mavericks owner and possible Pens/Pirates owner (we all know this’ll never happen) sitting court side. Word has it he might actually be interested in purchasing Pitt and maybe even moving the school to Dallas.

New Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was also there Monday, following Bill Cowher’s steps in attending. Other notable people who have been to the Pete in the last 5 years: Jeff Reed, Jerome Bettis (to support ND mostly), Franco Harris, Mel Blount, Mark Malone, Kordell Stewart, Joey Porter, Hines Ward, Marc Bulger, Dave Littlefield, the late Mayor Bob O’Connor, current Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato, Gov. Ed Rendell, gubernatorial candidate and ex-Steeler Lynn Swann, Penguins owner Mario Lemieux, Pirates CEO Kevin McClatchy and Alex Trebek.

Then we get this quote from Jeff Long.

As Pitt athletic director Jeff Long said of his facility, “It has become the place to be in the cold, winter months in Pittsburgh.”

Pitt basketball might be the place for the stars but for most regular people it’s hard to get a ticket. The hottest ticket in town might be a Pitt game if you like to make a donation on top of your season ticket expenses (or if you’re a celebrity) but to be honest, most people would rather go to a Penguins game than try to find a way into the Pete. With the student rush tickets for Pens games (generally a very good ticket for only $20), more people would say the Igloo is the place to be.

That’s not a big deal though. It’s the fact that Pitt is willing to screw “real” fans who actually care about weather they win or lose in order to bring in big names who don’t really care about the game.

Looking at the actual product on the court though…

I think this is where we miss Krauser. Not his skill set (Fields has filled in much better than most would have ever guessed) but the actual kind of person he was. Monday night, Louisville was able to get pumped up for that game. You can go ahead and say the Cards needed it but it’s not like Pitt has already clinched the Big East regular season title and can afford to lose the rest of their games. Krauser would have been able to bring some life to a team last night that was dead.

Perhaps it’s that Levance feels too young to step up and be vocal. Maybe he’s just naturally not a loud guy. The fact is we really don’t have anyone who can get the emotions going before and during the game.

If you want a ticket to the Pitt game call the ticket office the day of or a few days before each game. They always have a few single seats spread around the stadium. If you can’t get one that way, you can scalp tickets for like $50 or $60 bucks. You can almost always get tickets if you want them.

From my observations, Fields is the loudest and most vocal player on the court. Most of the other players are mute, in the sense that they only show emotion through facial expressions, especially Cook! I’m always going to support these kids but ultimately they need to communicate better. Why is it that other teams huddle up after a foul is issued against them and we don’t?

Comment by MoE 02.14.07 @ 12:21 pm

why do you want them to huddle-up?

Comment by scoocher 02.14.07 @ 1:11 pm

If you want tickets to the Pitt game, they are easy to get – MAKE A DONATION. “Real Fans” make a donation to support a team they care about. I’m 2 years out of Pitt, and I made a $1500 donation the first year, and the tickets were about $700, and I was already in the lower bowl! That’s $2200 for about 20 games, $110 per game including the donation. I had Pens season tickets last year, and they were $120 per game! They barely won a handful of home games – so tell me, which is a better deal? Pitt just structures the cost of the tickets differently – and if you want cheap tickets, go to Penn State. I think they have a pickup basketball team that plays tonight. I don’t think you can complain about the cost of Pitt tickets, everybody just wants them for free.

Comment by Stuart 02.14.07 @ 2:29 pm

I know I’m not the only one that feels that they screwed people who have held season tickets for a long time because there was a lawsuit filed against the athletic department about it.

Comment by Dennis 02.14.07 @ 2:40 pm

Pitt fans don’t donate a lot of money. That is a fact. I think the athletic department did what they felt was necessary to get people to donate. I don’t enjoy spending an extra grand for 2 tickets, but I love basketball and Pitt so I have to.

If you don’t want to donate you can still get tickets.

Comment by Omar 02.14.07 @ 2:50 pm

Omar-do you work for Pitt?

Comment by scoocher 02.14.07 @ 3:26 pm

Yhea Pitt screwed longtime season ticket holders.
Give me a break typical yinzer b.s.
Everything is great till ya got buck up.
Everybody wants top notch athletic programs at Pitt.
But when it comes to supporting those programs , well thats another story.
How and the hell is Pitt suppose to fund the programs?
We ranked in the bottom 5 of the Big East for donations. That is sad and people still bitch when they have to buck up.
It takes money to get to the top and to stay at the top.

Comment by kp 02.14.07 @ 3:26 pm

I’m sure that if Pitt still played at the Field House and went to the NIT every year, this wouldn’t be an issue. But the fact remains that Pitt is one of the top programs in the country, plays in one of the 5 or 6 best/prettiest/coolest/newest venues in basketball to watch a game (at least, in my book), and there are probably 30,000 people on a game-by-game basis that want tickets.

If you can figure out a economic model to placate everyone’s demand for $20 tickets without putting anyone off, and still making some cash for the athletic department, well, my hat goes off to you, good sir.

Comment by Aaron 02.14.07 @ 3:30 pm

Team huddles help players gain motivation and it also reinforces the need to communicate as a team…

Comment by MoE 02.14.07 @ 3:31 pm

Ha, Ha, I don’t work for Pitt. Maybe I should.

Comment by Omar 02.14.07 @ 3:43 pm

Donations? As far as I’m concerend, Pitt has still not attoned for the sins of Posvar and Bozic – the two men most responsible for the demise of what was once the pinacle of college football. Every program has up and down years, but they systematically destroyed it through arrogance and petty politics. I won’t contribute a dime until Pitt football wins a BCS-level game – one that they actually deserve to be in. Its why to this day I won’t buy season tickets to football. Return the program to even 80% of what it once was, and they’ll have my attention. Until then, they have to earn a donation. Considering the product on the field lately, its economic blackmail. I admit this a personal vendetta, and I don’t expect the younger guys to understand or agree – thats fine. But I also don’t feel like I’m missing much at Heinz Field these days, either.

As far as hoops are concerned, I could be persuaded to make the donation as I think they’ve really earned the support, but it still feels like extortion at some level. I don’t relish the idea of scalping tickets – with my luck I’d be one of the guys who gets scammed – so I won’t go that route. For 50-60 bucks, I’d rather go to the igloo legit if I can (this year – last year was a debacle for sure), but its getting tough to do.

On the Krauser comments, yeah, I think we miss his personaility. Everyone on the other teams hated the guy, but he got in your head. He was reckless and irresponsible at times, but I don’t think anyone ever questioned his heart. I’m not saying his presence would have changed the outcome of the Louisville game, but it might not have been the ass-kicking embarrasment it ended up being.

Be careful what you wish for. I wouldn’t curse my worst enemy with that fate. I’ve been there . 🙂

thestumper (Posvar) systematically destroyed it through arrogance and petty politics.

Cure Polio, or stack on 11th 12th 13th and 14th championships? Tough call… at least Posvar’s way we’re not all limpin’ and gimpin’ to the Heinz field turnstyles.

My call: push

The last two years Ive gotten tickets for the game like this.I do not donate and wait until they call me with the season tickets that are left over.I get 4 good seats and enjoy every game.Im still mad that they took my seats off me at the Feild house,I sat 3 rows back behind the Pitt benchRow C seats 1-4 for years, then all of a sudden if you didnt donate BIG money for those seats you lost them.I was really pissed. This was right after the Charles Smith/Jerome Lane/Demitrias Gore days. They figured they had the product it time to raise the price. Then we went into the shitter.Hey I pay for the tickets whatever they cost, but the seat liciense is a real ripoff.

Comment by Lapper 02.14.07 @ 8:10 pm

Supply and demand. It’s justified because they can. Same with football parking. What I don’t understand is, with football ticket demand NOT there at all, why they do it. I can see a moderate license for the Club Boxes plus the premium price, but not for the other sections.

Comment by geeman2001 02.14.07 @ 9:44 pm

I’m not THAT old, but yeah, I’m a little bitter – I admit it freely. In truth, the university has come a long way. Its a much safer campus, academic quality is up – the important things are there, and I’ve donated to a number of non-athletic concerns in the past. It doesn’t consume me – I’ve got far more important things in my life that bring me joy. Pitt football just isn’t one of them right now. I’d like it to be, but I’m wating for results.

Note that the Polio vaccine was announced in 1956. Posvar didn’t start his tenure until 1967. So you do the math, but he WAS a master money raiser. I give him credit for that and his military service – I think he was a general in the Airforce. But he was arrogant, and stuborn, and knew nothing about big time college athletics, and didn’t care to learn. Bozic was possibly the bigger culprit, but Posvar appointed him for a reason. There’s two sides to every story, but the results on the field make it clear that poor decisions were made for the wrong reasons.

I see no reason why you can’t have both. Other schools certainly manage it. I remember the days when you could tune into Pitt game and just assume they were going to kick the crap out of whoever they were playing – it didn’t matter who it was. Think current-day Ohio State. We had that once, even if only for a brief moment in time. But its hard to forget…

I am hopeful – Wanny is a lot of things, but you can’t say he’s a poor recruiter. He has to work and mold the talent he has, so we have to be patient for a couple more years, but there is hope. I think next year will be a wash at best, but things could get interesting 2-3 years from now.

Come to think of it, I’d even settle for a Gator Bowl win 🙂

Thestumper,

I enjoyed your initial post, even though I disagree with it. The AD at the time may not have been the best hire (or decision) but overall your assessment of Posvar is off.

You’re right he was an Air force pilot-he also graduated first in his class at West Point, went on to be a Rhodes Scholar and earned 5 academic degrees. He may have been tough to deal with at times, but great (driven) leaders often have this characteristic. He did not serve during the polio vaccine development but did serve after the fact-forging the medicine into the world renowned heights it has reached today.

Despite late80s and early 90s struggles, Pitt football was reborn during Posvar’s admin. Simply look at the records. I credit Tony Dorsett more for this development (similar to Vick at tech or Dawkins in hoops at Duke). The ‘76 season is when Pitt author Alberts said, ‘it came together”(1987). We would win our 9th championship before state would win 1…In itself amazing.

I do enjoy hearing about the times that Pitt was “like Ohio State today.” It reminds me of what we can return to and gives me a sense of pride to look back on. Despite the drop-off after the Sherril days, we did have two guys who would just miss out on the heisman and nearly 20 years later, have Larry #1 just miss out on the honor as well. More importantly, we are recruiting Larry type character guys and talent and have world class facilities.

People tend to follow a school for two reasons 1) because of the significant and profound impact the school had on their lives and/or 2) because what the school is doing today and where it is going tomorrow.

I am fortunate to support both notions-Pitt provided me with an excellent foundation to pursue my career, earn two master degrees and form relationships with friends I still have and value today. Today I believe we are moving in the right direction (in some cases sprinting) the campus has seen a massive face lift and the quality of student learning there is amazing-Pitt has produced more Rhodes Scholars than any other school in PA in the last 20 years (yes, including Penn).

You seem like a bright guy-we need more people like you on board as we head towards the next great chapter in Pitt sports.

Dennis, I’m glad you put that Krauser statement out there. I have felt the same way (and not just in the Lville game). I did not post a similar comment becuase Krauser seemed to have two types of fans on this blog: those who loved his game (me) and those who hated it. This is not a criticism of the current players, it’s just a recognition that when a team loses a fifth year senior point guard, there will be elements of his game that are missed in the following year, the most important of which is leadership (on the floor, in the huddle, at practice, and in the locker room). For the record, I think that Fields is doing just fine and by next year he will be the leader that Krauser had become. I will take issue with the “reckless” play criticism of Krauser. The fact is, last year almost every team we played was pressing our Guards for the entire game, you have to be agressive to beat the press and trapping our team faces and you are going to draw a few charging fouls. The same is true if you want to penetrate the middle to create for other players, which was what Krauser often did. This year’s team seems to have a lot of trouble driving to the basket. They have adjusted nicely with the strategy of dumping the ball to Gray and leting him be the playmaker. Next year, I think there will be more emphasis on the guards driving to to the basket, and yes, you will see those charging fouls return. You might even call Fields reckless!!! I’ll call him aggressive. And so it goes…

According to today’s PG, the team motivator and vocal leader is….Austin Wallace.

Comment by Kevin 02.15.07 @ 7:33 am

maybe stuart, we could combine two programs -your comment “and if you want cheap tickets, go to Penn State. I think they have a pickup basketball team that plays tonight” with the PITT football team and the $10.00 football ticket and lure some local high schools in and play…..

Just calling a spade a spade……

Comment by paulhackett 02.15.07 @ 12:01 pm

[…] And as I mentioned that Carl Krauser was missed as a leader, look at who pumps us up before games now: Austin Wallace! Actually, it says that Marcus Bowman did the same job last year, but still, you need someone who actually plays to keep a team pumped up. A red shirt sitting on the end of the bench during the game does not seem like the best leader to have. […]

OK, so let’s bring Krauser back to lead the pre-game and half-time team dance and he can even yell encouragement from the sidelines. JUST DON’T LET HIM ON THE COURT!!!!!! His inability/refusal to involve the rest of the team combined with his lack of speed, bad decisions and just general over-dribbling cost me more than few blood vessels. I’ve been on a few summer league teams that he wouldn’t have started for….

Comment by andre aldridge 02.15.07 @ 4:59 pm

A couple of years ago when I said they should have built the Pete with a few thousand more seats, everyone thought I was wrong and it would be too much. Today I still say they should have made it more of a 16-18,000 seat arena. And it seems like every year more and more bigger name concerts are playing at the Pete as well.

Comment by Eric R 02.16.07 @ 12:25 am

Eric R – you’re right; also, we’ll never have a first or second round game because its too small…i think the only mistake i can think of the administration made when they decided to built the Pete.

paulhackett – for now, i understand no one paying for a ticket to football. But give it a few years, i think we can have a howland like turnaround for football as well. We have everything you need, we just need a little time – freshman lineman don’t do so well against 4th and 5th year seniors… But the talent level is going up. I’m willing to be patient for a few more years on this. I think the admin made the right decision.

Krauser was a good player. The only player in school history with 1500 points, 500 assists, and 500 rebounds.

Comment by Omar 02.16.07 @ 1:28 pm

If I was dribbling the ball 60% of the time that my team had it, I’d have 1500 pts and 500 assists too. Apply some sound economic principles — you have to think about the opportunity cost — what other production could Pitt have had if Carl wouldn’t have had the ball for all those shots and passes? He cost them way more than he benefited them. His stay at Pitt was like a bad dream….like some older relative whose eligibilty would never end.

Comment by andre aldridge 02.16.07 @ 4:42 pm

Andre…for the three years that Krauser was our starting point guard, Pitt was 76 and 22. Over the four year period that he played, Pitt was 104-27. That’s pretty impressive. Seems to me that you want to give him blame for the losses and no credit for the victories. The guy could play, clearly it’s his brash style of play that bothers you and many others on this blog.
