Now that all football is done, the 6pm games on ESPN begin.

It’s a Coaches Versus Cancer day, so expect to see Jamie Dixon and Tim Welsh in sneakers.

If you are listening to the radio, be sure to leave a comment on how Hillgrove and Groat do when they have to say Weyinmi Efejuku.

6:12: Just got over here as the Hofstra game just went final. Missed the first 14 points of the game.

6:16: Oh, Gray will abuse Hill if the Friars leave it one-on-one.

6:21: 17-14 Pitt, 12:08. Sam Young not exactly looking that sharp early. Inconsistency is a killer for him.

6:24: 18-17 Providence, 10:46. Pitt slipping into Providence’s game by rushing some shots. Need to control the tempo.

6:42: 30-30 Providence, 3:03. Young recovered from missing some shots, a couple turnovers to notch 6 points. Cook has 7 points.

Providence was getting some tremendous penetration from Curry. This is probably the second best I’ve seen the Friars play on the road (the best was against UConn).

Is anyone else feeling a mixture of amusement and annoyance when they keep referring to rivalry week, with the implications that Pitt-Prov is a rivalry game?

6:56: Pitt trailing 34-33. Gray only played 8 minutes in the half with 2 fouls. Pitt’s shots were a mix of some rushed shots and others that just didn’t go. Graves and Ramon were 0-5 and very little. The team looks uncomfortable and unsettled.
Herbert Hill has been able to back down on the Pitt defense and Sharaud Curry has been very creative. The other players for the Friars haven’t shot that well.

Lots of time, and no reason to panic. Mild frustration is permitted.

7:23: Pitt leads 47-43, 13:11 left. Pitt has gone on an 11-1 run. Kendall has taken two charges in this game.

Just some less than smart play from Pitt too often, while Providence — and I can’t stress this enough — is playing one of their best games. They are, though, one of the bad FT shooting teams in the BE.

Pitt’s guards are not having a good game. Graves, Ramon and even Fields are struggling. Not just shooting, but spacing and ball movement overall.

7:38: Pitt leads 57-52. If Gray could just finish — at least two easy ones just rolled off the rim — he’d be closer to 30.

7:47: Graves grabs back the turnover on the errant pass, and wow! 63-59, and after the TV TO, a chance for one more.

7:59: Here’s a statement you don’t get to read everyday. Pitt has the advantage at the free throw line against Providence.

8:07: Whoever the color guy was that simply said “Fatigue” when Curry missed a FT was dead-on. Curry’s played the entire game. Can’t believe how much Gray struggles at the line, though, down the stretch.

8:10: Pitt wins, 74-68. It wasn’t pretty. It was a less then impressive win. Still that’s okay. Pitt was probably due for a bad game. The timing was important. Better to struggle in this game rather than the prior or even the next two.

The MASN schedule says no Pitt/Providence tonight at 6 for us DC/Balt people. Once Cincinnati/Rutgers is done, they’re going to show Colorado/KSU.

Lord only knows why.

Man, I love Aaron Gray. But does anyone else see his moving picks like I do?

Comment by PittHoops 02.10.07 @ 6:12 pm

Um, because it’s on ESPN.

Comment by Chas 02.10.07 @ 6:13 pm

Yeah, I got Pitt v. Providence on ESPN down here in FL.

Heading out to the bar to enjoy the rest of the game, let’s hope it’s a good one!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 02.10.07 @ 6:15 pm

well…sam young looks like shit

Comment by danstrohl 02.10.07 @ 6:20 pm

Sam Young’s missed out on a few rebounding opportunities already…

Comment by PittHoops 02.10.07 @ 6:23 pm

Someone tell Biggs he’s not Dirk Nowitzki

Comment by PittHoops 02.10.07 @ 6:26 pm

I hate when we play down to the level of our competition.

Comment by danstrohl 02.10.07 @ 6:39 pm

Nice to see some solid minutes out of Biggs.

Comment by Jon in NOVA 02.10.07 @ 6:52 pm

Not a great half for us. I think we’ll adjust and play much better in the second half.

Comment by Panthoor 02.10.07 @ 6:57 pm

That certainly would explain it. Wish I’d checked back to find that out more than 10 minutes ago.

Nothing like watching MIB on TBS when a Pitt game could be seen…

Comment by JLA 02.10.07 @ 7:10 pm

3rd foul on Gray now….uh oh.

Comment by Dennis 02.10.07 @ 7:13 pm

Looks like we almost manage to blow a 4 on 1 fast break.

Comment by Dennis 02.10.07 @ 7:14 pm

this may be the worst i’ve ever seen ramon play.

Comment by spur 02.10.07 @ 7:14 pm

I’m glad he’s leaving Gray in…if we had a little more control of the game, I might feel differently.

Comment by PittHoops 02.10.07 @ 7:15 pm

Ramon is playing like a POS tonight. He’s not even hitting the occasional 3.

Comment by Jon in NOVA 02.10.07 @ 7:15 pm

Finally, an Antonio Graves sighting.

Comment by spur 02.10.07 @ 7:20 pm

They’re contesting shots much better now, but giving up some offensive boards still.

Comment by PittHoops 02.10.07 @ 7:32 pm

Imagine what Gray could have if he wasn’t in foul trouble early.

Comment by Jon in NOVA 02.10.07 @ 7:38 pm

we need to slow down and get the ball to Gray. We’re running too much

Comment by TMGPanther 02.10.07 @ 7:41 pm

Graves is on tonight

Comment by TMGPanther 02.10.07 @ 7:45 pm

That didn’t look good. That big dumb white kid could have seriously hurt Gray. I was surprised he got up so quick.

Comment by Jon in NOVA 02.10.07 @ 7:54 pm

They just refuse to put this thing away. every time we’re up 4 or 5 the ball is thrown away or a wide open 3 is missed.

Comment by spur 02.10.07 @ 7:58 pm

Although Kendall has been good on the boards (10 rebounds), has Sam Young played in the second half?

Comment by Sean 02.10.07 @ 8:01 pm

Those announcers had a clear agenda. They seem to be disappointed that PC lost. For them to argue that the foul at the end on Gray was anything but an intentional foul is pathetic. Gray was in the air (even if was only two inches) to put in a layup and duffus pushes him with no attempt to play the ball. That is a text book definition for an intentional foul. Good to get this win, someone above said it right….they can’t all be pretty.

Comment by HbgFrank 02.10.07 @ 8:14 pm

Actually, they agreed that Hall from behind should have been called. It was that the call by the officials went on Efejuku instead. The refs called the wrong guy — missing the shove in the back that really sent Gray to the floor.

Comment by Chas 02.10.07 @ 8:18 pm

Man, Providence might be tough next season if they replace Hill. I’m happy we won today because West Virginia just made us look amazing. We beat them by 16 on Wednesday at their place and today they beat #2 UCLA by 5.

Comment by Panthoor 02.10.07 @ 8:18 pm

Chas, good clarification

Comment by TMGPanther 02.10.07 @ 8:19 pm

Winning on an off night–you have to love it.

Comment by danstrohl 02.10.07 @ 8:22 pm

I actually think the announcers thought that an intentional foul should have been called. They just said that the foul was on the wrong guy. Hall pushed Gray in the back, but the foul was called on Efejuku who got Gray on the arm trying to block the shot.

Comment by Sean 02.10.07 @ 8:24 pm

They acknowledged it but dismissed it. Maybe because AG got right up but he fell hard, and it could have been a disaster for him and Pitt’s team. Consistent with their attitude of the whole game though. It POed me at the time but we played poorly and didn’t deserve many accolades.

Comment by geeman2001 02.10.07 @ 8:50 pm

Just got back from the game, great win, did anyone see Cook pouting constantly, when he was taken out of the game he would walk slowly off the court barely making it off in time for play to start and his head was down like he was mad about something, looks like attitude adjustment is needed.

Comment by Buzz 02.10.07 @ 9:17 pm

apparently Tim Welsh missed the memo about coaches versus cancer…

Comment by Lauren 02.10.07 @ 10:03 pm

I think Welch was wearing black sneakers. The announcers commented on it during the game.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.10.07 @ 11:26 pm

I was at the game – was the refereeing as abhorrent as it appeared live? The last few minutes they couldn’t put hte game away because the refs called a foul on every Providence possession.

He wasn’t much early, but Graves hit a big shot every time we needed it tonight. He and Fields are clearly the go-to guys in the crunch. Both have hit big shots when we needed them game after game.

Comment by Carmen 02.11.07 @ 8:05 am

I’m usually one of the biggest ref bashers but last night I think we deserved most, and probably got away with a couple. It’s maddening when we keep sending them to the line and let them score with no time lost. Kendall nearly (or did) foul Curry on that late layup too, I think there was contact and we were lucky not to get that call. The announcers had just pointed out that going for a 2 there was probably a shaky decision and we almost made up for it for them. That extra free throw could have changed things.

Comment by geeman2001 02.11.07 @ 1:39 pm

Buzz,
I noticed Cook’s pouting and even worse was Benjamin–anyone see how after he was taken out in the first half he became completely despondent on the bench?
Wasnn’t even near the huddle during any timeouts.
Hope this stuff doesn’t steamroll into problems the rest of the way.
