You know, Pitt didn’t shoot free throws particularly well (13-21), but they were aces compared to Providence (7-16). Interesting to see that the final shooting percentages were nearly the same. Pitt was 28-60, while Providence 28-61. The key difference was that when the final stats come out and the halftime splits are seen, Pitt shot better in the second half.

This was a key win, because Pitt was actually outrebounded 41-33 (and worse 16-11 on offensive glass), and didn’t have a great advantage on shooting. Those are usually the things that indicate doom for Pitt. Pitt was able to overcome that. This was an off-night for the team, but they were good enough to over come that.

Providence played a much better game than I had seen from them recently (they looked nothing like the team that nearly blew it to Cinci at home. Hard to believe, but the Providence team could actually be quite good in the next year or so. Still, Pitt has beaten the Friars 7 straight. Since Pitt came into the Big East, Providence has been the one team they have consistently beaten.
The good: Pitt only had 10 turnovers to Providence’s 6. And the team had 18 assists.

Gray had 22 points. Cook had 11. Graves had 13 (all in the second half). Kendall had 10 rebounds — doing a decent job of picking up the slack on the boards when Gray was out — and those two charges he took were so important.

Despite all the struggles, Pitt had a very balanced distribution of minutes. Levance Fields and Graves played 31 minutes. Five  other players had at least 22 minutes. Benjamin had 11 minutes.

The bad: guard play was shaky, especially in the first half. Pitt only had 7 assists in the first half, and 6 turnovers.
It was disturbing to watch Ramon dribbling, trying to shake his defender to create space for his shot. That wasn’t fooling anyone. If he wants to do that, he needs to show them that he can take them off the dribble and go to the hoop.

It’s probably just me, but there were points where Gray settled for short jump shots rather than push to the basket. It made me think that he was doing that because he’d rather take the chance with the shot than draw the foul, and have to shoot free throws.

Ramon is absolutely pathetic when it comes to creating his own shot or trying to drive.

Ramon has never been quick enough off the dribble to create his shot.

Or could it be that Gray actually has a very good shot from 3 to 8 ft out, and really tends to sruggle with layups in a lot of games.

Nice win. Antonio Graves made key plays down the stretch once again. You can’t say enough about that kid. Providence played very hard and had a chance to get a huge win, but Gray was too much inside.

I like Gray, he’s a solid player and seems like a nice person on top of that. But when he goes up to the line to shoot free throws, I don’t like him as much. He played very well today, except for the FT’s which I do not want to speak more of. Louisville on Monday is a must win to keep the pressure on Marquette and G’town. The Washington game is genius at this time of the season because we get to taste a bit of the Pac-10. Both games should be wins and also the Seton Hall game down the road has to be won. Playing the #2,3,4 and 5 teams in the conference in the final 6 games is brutal.

What do these BE teams have to lose when playing Pitt, a top ten team? Absolutely nothing. Because of that they’ll be loose and have fun like last night. Winning games like this shows character.

I thought Gray played much more agressive. He needs to dunk the ball more. He tends to go soft to the basket too often. Either way we will miss the big guy next year. Another good win.

No Big East win is unimpressive. Just about every school is good enough, the coaches are decent enough, and they work hard enough to put it together any given night and beat one of the top dogs.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Gray. His presence changes the opponents entire game. He is a real force on defense (which is why he will be a first round pick in the NBA draft). We will definitely miss him next year. I just think that he is better when he shoots the ball from 3 to 8 feet, then when he is trying to muscle the ball in from under the basket. I’ve seen many say that he needs to dunk the ball more. The truth is, if he could, he would. The only way he can cleanly dunk the ball is when he can turn and face the basket with a full step. Have you ever seen him dunk the ball in the face of a defensive player? He has a nice hook shot and a good set shot, I have no problem with him taking those shots. I also like the reverse layup that he seems to have added to his game. He tends to make that one a lot because he is not trying to pump fake someone and draw a foul. On too many occasions he tries to muscle in a layup, misses the shot, gets fouled and then, at best, makes one of two. Again, I love the guy, I just want him to do what he does best.
