Closing the McCoy Matter

LeSean McCoy ended the non-suspense by officially declaring that he will be going to Pitt.

Daphne McCoy said her son had seriously considered attending Penn State but said a trip to State College, scheduled for last Thursday, was canceled.

The Pittsburgh trip was also scheduled, and Daphne McCoy said her husband insisted LeSean honor his intent to visit. Once there, Daphne McCoy said, LeSean quickly warmed to the possibility of a Pitt commitment.

“We had to postpone the trip to Penn State and I was going to go there this weekend, but now there’s no need to go,” LeSean McCoy said.

It’s been a rumor for some time that McCoy’s father was really in favor of LeSean going to Pitt — even last year. There have been some sour grapes of course, which is typical (I know I was less than pleased at the time when Morelli made his final switch). The grousing and unconfirmed reports regarding McCoy’s academic status and that PSU pulled his offer, actually was something McCoy had to address.

McCoy also disputed rumors that Penn State hadn’t offered a scholarship because he hasn’t qualified yet or that the Nittany Lions pulled their offer off the table.

“Of course they offered me,” McCoy said. “That’s crazy for people to say that. That’s nuts. Anybody who believes that, they’re nuts, too.”

Or bitter.

It provided a huge boost to what had still been a very good recruiting class.

He becomes one of the most prized prospects in Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt’s 2007 recruiting class, which is on the verge of another top-10 national ranking by scouting services.

“From a talent perspective, he’s a fantastic talent,” said Allen Wallace, Scout.com national recruiting editor and SuperPrep magazine publisher. “We’re talking about the kind of guy who was getting recruited by BCS bowl teams. This is the kind of player Pitt needed to improve its stature.

“They have to get guys LeSean McCoy if Dave Wannstedt wants to get to the next level.”

Scout.com now ranks Pitt’s class as #8 in the country. Rivals.com puts Pitt at #21. The always quirky Scouts, Inc./ESPN.com (Insider subs.) moves Pitt to #26 (behind Kentucky?).

nice pickup, lets see if we can blow his redshirt too.

It’s easy to be skeptical about McCoy until he suits up and plays, but my mind has been changed by reading all the reviews over the last two years about him. Not one mentioned any weakness in his game or that he could be a hit or miss proposition.

Pitt’s recruiting class has six kids with 4.5 or better speed in the 40 yard dash, in addition to the six under 4.5 that we recruited last year. Hope some of these kids see the field this season.

2008 should be nasty.

To Reed about how we have 6 guys who run under a 4.5 forty don’t forget last year at the Penn St. combine he went to his fastest 40 time was 4.26! Also to Rex I can understand why you would say what you did, but if LeSean gets here and is ready to play he will be starting he’s that much better than all of our other TBs.

I would love to see him starting or playing regularly. My problem is when we use him for three plays and he never sees the field again ala DD

The strangest thing to me is how the big two scouting services can differ so much on the Pitt classes. All of their top 20 is virtually the same with a little variation maybe 3-4 spots for some teams. But 8th in one and 21st in another? Wow, that’s a pretty big difference.

Anyone know why that kind of difference shows up between the two? Did Scout (who ranked them 21st) not give them credit for any key players or something? I know that team rankings can vary, but that’s the biggest difference by far of any of the top 25 teams.

Whoops – reverse that. Rivals had us at #21, not Scout.

Comment by PittHoops 01.17.07 @ 2:50 pm

PittHoops as far as Scout.com and Rivals it is primarily based on the number of 5, 4, & 3 star recruits a team has landed.

Scout.com has Pitt with 3 Five Stars, 8 Four Stars, and 8 Three Stars for an average rating of 3.50.

Riavlas has Pitt with 0 Five Stars, 5 Four stars, and 12 Three Srars for an average rating of 3.00.

It comes down to how many stars a service rates a player and Rivals does not rate Pitt recruits as high as Scout.

As for Scouts, Inc./ESPN.com someone who is a subscriber can check it out.

PittHoops–Last year was similar with Scout having Pitt at ~#11 and Rivals ~#21.

There is virtually no chance that McCoy will redshirt (it would take an early injury). He will see a lot of playing time. He is not DD, he is a true tailback. He will not be the typical first year player becuase he is not a first year player. He spent this year at a Prep school, so basically he is a year bigger and a year wiser than most freshmen. He knows the importance of academics, the meeting room and the huddle. He gets it now, and we will have a lot of fun watching him play next year!

McCoy is flat out Nasty! This is a the best running back we have had since Tony D. Here’s to hoping that we get to see him featured and they move LaRod to 3rd down back/return man/reverses/screens guy.

That’s what I’ve been trying to say to people McCoy is in a league above DD I think. Dorin can play but McCoy is a living legend as far as it goes in the high school ranks. I think McCoy could be the best PROSPECTS ever to come out of PA. Now I said prospects because we all know what Tony Dorsett did but as much as I love him he wasn’t that good in high school. Pitt was one of the few teams that offered Tony out of high school and he wanted to go to Notre Dame. Anyway if McCoy sticks with his commitment he could be the best since Tony. LeSean would’ve been the all-time high school leader in rushing yards had he not broke his ankle.

Kenny and Pitt72 – thanks for those notes on the recruiting sites. It helped me to understand it a little better.

It just seems a little odd to me that Pitt was the only one that really differed considerably. And as Pitt72 pointed out, it was like that last year. I’m just curious why Pitt is the only one that differs so much. I guess the two sites just happen to not be able to come to a consensus on Pitt’s players.

[…] So, apparently there have been rumors that have been getting a lot of buzz on the message boards that maybe LeSean McCoy might be lured to Penn State at the last minute (gee, I guess his academic qualification is no longer an issue). This, despite attempts to dispel that rumor by McCoy’s prep school coach a few days ago. […]
