That was the big thing people were taking away from what Pitt did last night.

It’s a chicken vs. egg argument.

Are Pittsburgh’s shooters hitting so many 3-pointers because center Aaron Gray is so dominant? Or is the Panther big man so dominant because his guards are knocking down those outside shots?

It doesn’t matter much to seventh-ranked Pitt, but its opponents would love to know the secret.

“They are balanced in every sense of the word,” Georgetown coach John Thompson III said of the Panthers.

“They can put three or four shooters around Gray,” Thompson continued. “It’s hard to focus on Gray because you could leave a terrific shooter.”

Andy Katz from ESPN.com also wrote of the balance.

The reason Pitt is in this position? The Panthers are the most experienced and balanced team in the Big East. That may or may not equate to a No. 1 seed or a Final Four run. But if you look at the Big East, who has as complete a team as the Panthers?

The box score is fascinating in the pace of the game was actually quite slow. Under 100 shots taken in the game. Yet because both Pitt and Georgetown were shooting and executing their offense so well, it was a very high scoring game despite not a lot of possessions. Pitt and G-town regularly ran plenty of time off the clock, but few turnovers and not even much fouling.

It really was a tremendously well-played game by both teams.

“I just know that’s a very, very good team,” said Thompson, when asked if he ever had a team shoot 60 percent and lose. “I don’t think we played poorly. When you make a mistake, they capitalize on it. It seems like every mistake you make, they capitalize on it. At both ends of the floor, that’s a very deep and experienced team.”

It was so well-played that on the rare times that Pitt or Georgetown would actually fail to score on consecutive possessions you would get nervous for your side. It leaves Pitt as the only unbeaten in Big East conference play. Even Bob Smizik seems encouraged.

About the closest to a “negative” would be that the anticipated battle of the big men didn’t materialize as both Pitt and Georgetown play as a team and know to keep everyone involved. Of course, someone has to be a little down on Gray not dominating as anticipated this season.

More later.

Awesome performance last night. The crowd was unbelievable. It was the best atmosphere since last year’s West Virginia game. Lot of fun! We are really good, but the defense has to get a little better. I think it will. I look forward to a deep run in March with this team.

Big weekend coming up here UConn and Marquette both at home though if we win both games then we will have a real big lead in the Big East. Also we have got a huge commitment from LeSean McCoy if he gets eligible he will be a monster for us. Probably the best RB out of PA in the last 10-20 years maybe the
best ever.

I think that Tony Dorsett might take issue with that last statement…

Tony Dorsett wasn’t that good while in high school yes he was one of the greatest in college he originally wanted to go to Notre Dame but didn’t get an offer. LeSean could have went to any school he chose to so as far as high school LeSean was a better prospect

I was in the Zoo for the game, and one person had a big checklist with the names of prospects like Bostick and Hynoski on it, and all were checked off except McCoy’s name. We chanted his name, and he came over and checked it off. So I guess I had inside info on his commitment.

this guy could have a bigger impact on the program than..uh um…TD.

He will start and gain over 1,435 (just in rushing)this year

The new order: Hoops leads, fb follows.

To quote Bill Parcells… before we get out the annointing oil for LeSean let’s see what he delivers. I hope he is better than Dorsett, but that is a pretty high mountain to climb.

Curtis Martin, Larry Johnson and a whole lot of other great PA backs might take offense also. Let’s not name this kid the second coming of Tony Dorsett yet – he hasn’t played against anyone at this level for two years, has a history of talking out of both sides of his mouth and might have trouble being academically eligible. He has a long road to go before he is even able to practice with the team let alone start any games – if he sticks with his verbal.

It is great that he wants to go to PITT though, and if he lives up to the hype DW will have found that back he’s been looking for, but just not the ‘big back’ he’s stated he wanted. 5’11” & 200 lbs is not your bruiser – but Hynoski can fill that bill. I’d personally like to see us use some of the rushing talent we already have on the roster run behind an improved O line – if those lineman don’t improve it really won’t matter who’s carrying the ball.

P.S. He’ll never be better than Dorsett was in college because he’ll never break the existing records that Dorsett did, or have the type of impact on a program that was almost assured of shifting down to Div. II football. He (and Majors) pretty much saved PITT football. You have to remember that when Dorsett set those records he shattered then and pushed them up so high no one touched them for 20 years.

brian davis was a heck of a back in h.s. maybe one of the most highly recruited pre internet backs from pa. never got elgible for more than 3 games. saw him play and get a 7 yard run hit in the backfield does a 360 hit again at los nother 360 runs for 7 . prettiest run i ever saw from a back.
