All of the major sports websites have confirmed that the Big East will be saying farewell to one of it’s coaches; Luhlvuhl’s Bobby Petrino will be heading to Atlanta and will be named the new head coach of the Falcons.
There are two ways to look at this from a Big East standpoint. Either you say it’s great that B.E. coaches (Petrino, Rodriguez, Dantonio, Schiano) are considered for jobs like these…or you can go the opposite way and say it’s not good that the conference is losing such a good coach.
I’m not sure which way to think yet, what about you?
No reason for him to think his stats will increase under a new coaching staff his senior season.
Will Michael Bush even use a medical red-shirt to stay at school with a new coaching staff?
Things looks bleak for Louisville currently.
It’s an enormous conference perk to have a BCS designation – and means big guaranteed $$ to all the conference schools – national recognition aside.
And again, everything in sports is not measured against the best of that sport. But, you can’t tell me that the top BE teams couldn’t hold their own against most, if not all, of the PAC 10 teams (may be a loss against USC). All this is terribly important in light of the big three team defection that occurred in our conference – no other conference probably could have survived that – and the BE did and actually has thrived, and in the long run might just be a stronger conference for it. Say what you will about the BCS committee, but they showed a real leap of faith keeping us as BCS designated and we are showing that faith was justified.
So, I believe we have proven that we can hang with the ‘big boys’ as you say – just look at the BE’s out of conference record for 2006. We had the best record against non-con opponents and swept our bowls. And, no matter how you cut it or your outlook on whether we could beat the top non-con teams – it’s damn good.
Louisville will survive the loss of Petrino if he goes, their program is pretty strong, and they might just find a coach to carry on what he started.
I won’t miss Petrino.
That’s my point-we have proven we can play with anybody as a conference.
However, I believe the reason why we’re able to survive the exodus of some teams is not the upgrade in level of play (although it helps) but rather that we have as a conference, with major markets which means major dollars (regardless if cities like Philly or New York don’t have a football team in the conference or our Florida representation is average at best).
The real question for me is-can we get some Louisville commits now that Petrino is gone?
The BE sweep in the bowls was great. The conference teams have to strengthen their respective out of conference schedules for the BE to gain greater respect.
I was particularly happy to see two BE teams beat two ACC teams. Too bad Navy barely lost to BC. Miami was fortunate to beat Nevada. Coker should be happy that he does not work for UM as he was treated poorly after several very good years.
The Tulsa coach looks to be a front runner for Petrino’s old job, and from all accounts he’s well regarded so there might not be a big drop off in their level of play.
The real issue is that we should go after L-ville’s recruits!
