Open comments. I’ll be watching the game and posting some stuff. Not a full liveblog. Tonight’s adult beverage to get me through is the the Dalmore Single Malt Scotch, Cigar Malt.

7:20: Whenever there is a shot by Pitt, there is no one else besides Gray under the basket. Making any attempt at a rebound a 1-on-3 battle. Gray had better be well conditioned. The plan for every team is to draw Gray as far from under the basket on defense as possible.

Not a pretty start for either team, but I don’t like what I’m seeing from Pitt’s rebounding effort. Pitt is 1-4 on FTs.

7:35: Majerus after Benjamin’s 3 in the corner. “Pitt finally with some ball movement.” Yep. Too much standing around on offense.

The good news for Pitt is that the game is still very close. Pitt can adjust and hopefully get some coffee or something for the second half.

7:47: Pitt trailing at the half, but only by 1. 34-33.

Coach Dixon heading into the lockerroom. As you expect just positive. Folks, the day he rips his team or anything like that at halftime is the day we know pressure is getting to him.

Pitt needs to find Gray. Period. They aren’t even trying to get him the ball. Part of that is Pitt seemed to have a bit more trouble than expected with the zone.

I was really scared when Cook came down badly and seemed to be grabbing his groin, but he seems okay by the end of the half.

I’m really bothered by the poor rebounding. None of the guys at power forward are providing much.

8:04: Syracuse has to burn an early TO as Pitt goes on a 7-0 run in the first 1:12. Much better energy coming out of the break.

8:10: Terrance Roberts is flat on his back. His face ran right into Kendall. Looked accidental, but he staggered down.

8:25: Levance Fields has gotten so aggressive on offense the last couple weeks. And he is 8-13 tonight.

Roberts for Syracuse is getting stitches and checked for a concussion.

8:37: Syracuse is having Krauser flashbacks with the way Fields has played.

Harris for ‘Cuse is showing why Pitt wanted him badly.

Rick Majerus is sticking to his talking points about Ramon. Kind of comical.

Syracuse is making its push, Pitt has to slow it down.

8:58: Pitt wins by 8, 74-66.

Levance Fields for the post-game interview. Talked about the team, and how Gray opens things up for the others and he just happened to be knocking them down.

I nice road win against a place that used to be a house of horrors until the new century.
The post-game credits to Pitt’s mental toughness and not panicking under pressure. Bardo in the studio may be the first analyst to say that any player for Pitt can and will step up — rather than complaining about the lack of a go to guy.

This thing better freakin be in high definition.

We didn’t buy a $1,500 HDTV for nothing.

Comment by Dennis 01.04.07 @ 6:44 pm

what a depressing start. why do we all of a sudden think we can shoot 3s? Do we even practice FTs?

Comment by Jon C 01.04.07 @ 7:21 pm

FT’s are a big problem. Hustling for loose balls too.

Comment by Panthoor 01.04.07 @ 7:30 pm

Tyrell Biggs instead of Levon Kendall tonight is drawing my ire. That dunk off a rebound Syracuse could have been avaoided with a boxout. The two missed free throws didn’t help either.

It’s early, but looking bad so far. Syracuse came out and missed a bunch of shots and we were still behind because everyone suddenly thought they were Dale Ellis. Oh, and Gray has to make those putbacks. I’m done.

Comment by PittHoops 01.04.07 @ 7:33 pm

Wow, how many shots can we miss?

Comment by PittHoops 01.04.07 @ 7:34 pm

Who knew that Kendall was the greatest piano player to ever live?

Now if only he could shoot and defend a little better…

Comment by Sean 01.04.07 @ 7:35 pm

Who knew that Kendall was the greatest piano player to ever live?

Majerus was not impressed.

Comment by Sean 01.04.07 @ 7:38 pm

Seems like when we actually get an open shot we get scared and dish it away.

Comment by Dennis 01.04.07 @ 7:40 pm

Considering the amount of FT’s we have missed..it’s not bad to be down only 1 at the Carrier Dome.

Comment by Panthoor 01.04.07 @ 7:46 pm

Good end to a frustrating first-half. Shooting percentages are eerily similar (Both teams are at 43% from the field and both are about 25% from as 3 point land). We’ve got to hit some of those shots. Syracuse hasn’t impressed me yet tonight, but if we shoot as bad as we did (including FTs), we’re going to be in trouble.

Comment by PittHoops 01.04.07 @ 7:49 pm

Decent score considering how poorly we played offensively. For once the defense is keeping us in the game. I think Syracuse coming out in man and constantly switching defenses had the players confused. One way to combat that is to push the ball a bit more after rebounds. We need to relax on offense and recognize what the defense is and run a nice set play. The shots will start to go down if they are preceded by some crisp passes.

Comment by Omar 01.04.07 @ 7:52 pm

They’re short-staffed, we’re starting to wear them down. We’ll pull away.

Comment by steve 01.04.07 @ 8:01 pm

Great start at the beginning of the 2nd half.

Pulled out to the six point lead.

Comment by Dennis 01.04.07 @ 8:05 pm

Nice 7-0 start to the second half. Big 3 by Graves and a nice steal and basket by Fields.

Comment by Sean 01.04.07 @ 8:06 pm

I’m not a basketball expert so someone please explain to me: when the other team (any team we play) gets a fast break, why do we feel the need to foul them? I could understand them doing that to us, since we won’t make either of the FTs, but they apparently practice FTs. I’m sure there is some great strategy here that a simpleton like me does not grasp, please fill me in.

Comment by Jon C 01.04.07 @ 8:13 pm

Can Kendall, for once, please, for the love of all that is holy and great about basketball, take the ball to the hoop instead of meekly shooting 10-foot jumpers he can’t make!!!!

And, please, Mr. Dixon, get Sam Young and Ronald Ramon on the floor.

Comment by Carmen 01.04.07 @ 8:17 pm

Jon C – not sure if you’re being sarcastic, but if not, it’s not you. Generally, you don’t want to foul someone breaking away unless there’s no one back to stop a potentially easy layup. If the other player is on the track to an easy layup, then you want to foul them because they’re basically going to get two points on the layup. You want to at least foul them and make them work for the two points at the free throw line.

Comment by PittHoops 01.04.07 @ 8:19 pm

Chas – Is the new comment process working properly? I’ve submitted a few comments but nothing has appeared on the site. Thanks.

Comment by Sean 01.04.07 @ 8:20 pm

Jon C:

It’s usually just stupidity by the guy who fouls him. Probably the same reason why we aren’t getting it down low into Gray.

Just a bunch of stupidity…

Comment by Dennis 01.04.07 @ 8:20 pm

Carmen, I can’t remember the last time Kendall not only took it to the basket successfully, but even unsuccessfully.

Good point, Omar, about the confusion of the players with the defense. All we heard all week was about Pitt having to play against the zone. You would think that they would at least prepare for the possibility of a switch.

Comment by PittHoops 01.04.07 @ 8:21 pm

Damn, Levance has 16 with a ton of time still left.

Comment by Dennis 01.04.07 @ 8:22 pm

We need to bury them right now.

Comment by Panthoor 01.04.07 @ 8:24 pm

First time these clown announcers mention that the cuse is short-staffed. “It’s all Pitt, it’s all over.”

Comment by steve 01.04.07 @ 8:24 pm

Line of the night from Majerus (although a bit premature): “It;s all Pitt and it’s all over quite frankly.”

Comment by PittHoops 01.04.07 @ 8:25 pm

Is it me, or did Kendall get bumped by a Syracuse player, which led to his arms flailing back and whacking Roberts in the jaw? I’ve seen the replay 3 times now and that’s what it looks like to me? If so, can the announcers shut about it possibly being on purpose or Pitt’s “rough” style of play?

PittHoops, you are probably right. But at least there’s the chance of him getting fouled if he goes to the hoop. He’ll probably miss both free throws, but maybe then Young or Benjamin will get a rebound. See, I’ve got this whole thing worked out. 😀

Comment by Carmen 01.04.07 @ 8:27 pm

I was partially being sarcastic, I just don’t get that strategy when the other team makes thier FTs, they get the points and you get a foul. Giving BB a try because I am no longer a Pitt football fan. Can’t root for a team that won’t fire such an morbidly retarded D-coordinator. Sorry to bring up the football team everyone.

Comment by Jon C 01.04.07 @ 8:28 pm

I appologize for that comment, I didn’t mean to insult retarded people.

Comment by Jon C 01.04.07 @ 8:29 pm

Yeah, Carmen, I think I misunderstood the question a little. I was explaining a breakaway, but I think you were talking about the fouling in general (which Pitt has been doing way to much of).

So in an effort to not confuse Jon, basically the answer is you don’t want to foul someone going to the hoop unless it’s a situation where the person is going to get an easy, uncontested layup.

On a side note, we need to extend this lead or Syracuse is going to get right back in it.

Comment by PittHoops 01.04.07 @ 8:31 pm

I figured you were at least a little bit, Jon. But figured we’d cover all the bases.

Comment by PittHoops 01.04.07 @ 8:31 pm

Fields on on fire and the game is getting a little more physical now. Tons of little body contact type of things going on right now.

Comment by Dennis 01.04.07 @ 8:32 pm

Gray keeps missing open jumpers. Fields is definitely carrying Pitt tonight.

Comment by Sean 01.04.07 @ 8:33 pm

That was definitely offensive basket interference.

Comment by Sean 01.04.07 @ 8:43 pm

hail to pitt

Comment by steve 01.04.07 @ 8:55 pm

Wow, what a close call. That’s why we had to put them away when we were up by about 10. I know Syracuse is a decent team, but they played badly tonight. Only sloppy play led to Pitt’s lead falling to 3.

On the good side, Pitt really stepped up their play in the 2nd half.

Comment by PittHoops 01.04.07 @ 8:56 pm

Great win. I can sleep in peace now hehe.

Comment by Panthoor 01.04.07 @ 8:57 pm

Fields was great tonight! Nice win for Pitt.

Comment by Sean 01.04.07 @ 9:00 pm

All in all, a great win on the road in a tough environment. Good start to the conference season.

Comment by PittHoops 01.04.07 @ 9:01 pm

Really liked what I saw offensively in the second half. More importantly the defense was tremendous tonight. Nichols had maybe 10 points and they were all on really tough shots. That is the benefit of playing a tough non-conference, you are exposed to good players and know what to expect.

We didn’t get an awful lot from our frontcourt and still won comfortably. That is a very good sign. Fields is awesome. Still thing Young needs to play more, but now I am nitpicking. Last thing, Syracuse is very undisciplined and has a ton of work to do to make the tournament.

Comment by Omar 01.04.07 @ 9:08 pm

It is most certainly a hard place to play. Its great to see Levance score like he did.

The one moment in game that really impressed me was in the latter stages of the game when the Cuse D was playing like he** to deny the pass into the hole in the zone. Graves put a move on and stepped inside of it and dished it to the open man for the J. It’s what you need to do against Cuse’s vaunted zone.

Comment by Kenny 01.04.07 @ 9:17 pm

A good win in a tough away venue – kudos PITT!

Also, PITT football got a great commit today from Mo Williams – a 6’3″, 4 star WR who could have gone a lot of other places. He had offers from PSU, WVU, Iowa and Maryland – and still chose the Panthers. This after PITT not making a bowl. This is a good recruiting coup for DW and shows that there is still buy-in from the recruits, coaches and parents.

Comment by Reed 01.04.07 @ 9:50 pm

One other thing regarding tonight’s game, Keith Benjamin came in and hit some huge shots in the first half. What a great kid! He doesn’t complain or sulk and is a great teamate. More importantly he comes in and plays hard every minute he is out there and always seems to make a momentum changing basket. His three late in the first half was big and he added a few monster boards over Paul Harris (an athletic freak with ridiculously long arms who needs to learn how to play basketball). Glad he is a Panther.

Comment by Omar 01.04.07 @ 11:12 pm

What are the opinions here on Gray at the moment? He was less than impressive last night and moved like a turle with a bad hang nail on defense. How Devendorf can slice through there and get two layups between Gray and Kendall is beyond me. His defensive presence, generally speaking, is somewhat lacking.

On the positive side, Levance was awesome, Benjamin was solid, when he was in, and Graves hit some big shots (although he took one or two bad ones).

Rebounding and hustle continue to be an issue. But they hit big shots when they needed them – on the road, to boot – so that’s a very important sign.

Comment by Carmen 01.05.07 @ 8:14 am

good game played by the panthers….i thought the first half we played sloppy, and we were lucky to be down 1…we played well at spurts in the 2nd half, and it turned out to be good enough……nice to see the guards knocking down important shots, especially since it looks like gray is not going to become more aggressive like we had all hoped…he was timid last yr (settling for layups instead of dunks and those silly 10 footers from the baseline) and it looks like he will continue to be timid this yr……unless he is still feeling crappy from that sickness he had………….

good post about benjamin…..he’s great to have off the bench, and those 2 threes kept us in the game in the first half………

Comment by Schoe 01.05.07 @ 8:49 am

Victories in Big East away games are always a good thing, but I didn’t like a bunch of things I saw last night. Pitt rushed their offense for the first 10-15 minutes and Dixon wasn’t able to get them under control. Everyone and their mother knows the way to beat the Cuse zone is to get it in the high post/middle, but Pitt was only too happy to keep shooting 3s and ignore the fact that the Orange only dressed 7 and were asking to get pounded down low. It’s great that we now have a team that can hit some outside shots, but I’d like to see more game coaching out of Dixon. When was he going to tell the players not to throw it down low on the baseline where Syracuse wants to trap? When was he going to realize that Cook is pretty useless on O against that type of zone team and doesn’t give enough on defense/rebounding to deserve many minutes? (Give Benjamin more of his minutes against the Orange and let Cook play more against man-to-mans when his driving ability matters.) I think Dixon is running a great program, but I think his game coaching is, at best, a work in progress. He doesn’t seem to have his wits about him when it matters. (It doesn’t make me feel any better when a Pitt player told us 2 yrs ago that Dixon was so worked up before a BE game that he threw up in the locker room and the kids had to calm him down. I’m hoping he’s past that stage.)

I’m worried the Big East is down SO FAR that we’re going to watch Pitt win 12 games or so without great efforts and then need more when it comes to March.

One other comment…..why do Gray and Kendall have to spend so much time on the court together? It makes for a really slow, unathletic frontcourt. I’d like to see Dixon let Kendall have some minutes backing up Gray and get Young in the game more alongside both of them.

Again…I’m happy with any road win, but Boeheim’s team looked a mess and Pitt didn’t look a whole lot better for large stretches of that game.

Comment by jason maile 01.05.07 @ 9:50 am

While there are other players that you could argue control Pitt’s ability to go deep in the tournament, I think Gray is the only one where if he plays good enough, could take Pitt all the way.

However, it looks like sometimes he gets ignored on offense. And when he’s not being ignored, Pitt can’t find a way to get him the ball (ala late in the game last night).

In the past three games, he’s had a TOTAL of 19 points. The first thing to point out is that Pitt won ALL of those games. I don’t place that lack of scoring on Gray because it wasn’t really his fault as he got less than ten FG attempts in each game. So I don’t think he’s getting the ball enough.

By the way, seems like we settled for too many outside shots in the first half without even looking inside.

Back to the post.

To me, he should be getting about 13-15 shots a game. For those that think that’s too much and not possible, he managed to get 16 off in only 25 minutes against Northeastern this year (I know, I know – Northeastern is a nobody. True, but I’m just using the stat to show it’s possible).

I’m not saying he should be in there forcing shots, but I just think that for them to go far, they’ve got to go to him a little more. When he’s generally the tallest guy on the court, why not take advantage of high-percentage shots? Not to mention he can also step out a little bit and shoot mid-range jumpers.

Comment by PittHoops 01.05.07 @ 9:57 am

Jason, I think Pitt rushed their offense because they wanted to tire Syracuse, with only 7 bodies, out. It worked.

Comment by steve 01.05.07 @ 10:08 am

Syracuse was determined not to let Gray get the ball in the high post. His 10 foot baseline jumper was a little off yesterday and that held back his point total. I think 10-12 good shots is enough for Gray. 15 is too many for any player on Pitt, unless they are on fire like Fields in the second half.

Syracuse had a good strategy on defense early and Pitt was confused. We really calmed down late in the half and made some big baskets. The second half was picture perfect offensive execution. If we keep knocking down these perimeter shots, then things will open up significantly for Gray. The defense was much better last night and that is the most important takeaway from yesterday’s game. Graves played a great game against Nichols.

Comment by Omar 01.05.07 @ 10:15 am

That’s an interesting point. Could be true. But even it was by design, you can play up-tempo without taking bad shots.

Comment by jason maile 01.05.07 @ 10:15 am

The high post is always wide open against Syracuse’s zone, and it was again last night. Boeheim hasn’t changed defensive strategy in 20 yrs.Gray is the wrong guy to exploit the high post, however. I’d rather see Cook or Young flashing to the ball and then dumping it down low to Gray.(Like Sam did once for Gray’s only dunk of the game. That should tell you something. You should be able to pass high to low like Lett and Troutman used to against Syracuse.) That should have been the plan going into the game. I also agree that Gray has to see the ball more. He’s a good passer now and Pitt might beat mediocre comp with the backcourt scoring like last night, but they won’t beat anybody good that way.

Comment by jason maile 01.05.07 @ 10:21 am

“Boeheim hasn’t changed defensive strategy in 20 yrs.” Is that why they came out man-to-man? Boehiem didn’t want Gray getting the ball in the high post because he is a more skilled passer than the rest of our big men. It was open for Kendall but he couldn’t exploit because his mediocre jump shot doesn’t have to be defended. I agree with Young being a better option and the game tape will confirm that for the coaching staff.

Comment by Omar 01.05.07 @ 10:53 am

they played man for 1-2 possessions and then went back to what they’ve been doing for 20 yrs. think you’re too optimistic about the coaching review, but here’s hoping.

Comment by jason maile 01.05.07 @ 11:14 am

I think 15 shots is too much for just about every Pitt player, but not Gray. Oklahoma State plays a very similar style to Pitt and they have TWO guys (Boggan/Curry) that have done it several times this year. Since he’s a center, you’d get many more high-percentage shots, so it makes even more sense to me.

And again, I’m not saying for him to force shots (or for the players to force the ball in the paint). If it’s not there, then it’s not there. But if defenses play him as tightly as they did last night, can’t we run some plays or set screens to get him more open? It seems when he’s not open, that the players spend time trying to find the first open 3-point shot they can.

A big benefit to him being covered so much is that other players are getting some open looks. But if Pitt can’t hit the shots (as they couldn’t in the first half last night), that could cost us a big game down the stretch.

Maybe I’m wrong on this, but it seems like he could use a few more looks.

Comment by PittHoops 01.05.07 @ 11:51 am

Gray took 9 shots last night. Only 2 were layups or dunks. They denied him the ball in the high post and doubled him on the baseline. If teams are going to do that, then he can’t take more then 10 shots a game.

If we continue to share the ball like we have, then we will get really good shots for everyone else. Just have to knock down the open jump shots and drive to the hoop when they over play the three. If our guards continue their solid play, Fields especially, then things will get a lot easier for Gray. Of course there will be nights when we struggle, but so far the offense has been very smooth. Even in our losses we played well offensively.

The defense was much better yesterday and that is great news. Hopefully Dixon plays Kendall less at the 4 for Young. Kendall can make up the lost minutes at the 4 by backing up Gray at the 5. Young really helps us in every aspect of the game relative to Kendall at power forward. However, I am not that optimistic about seeing this particular change.

Comment by Omar 01.05.07 @ 12:17 pm

I saw the exact same team that played against Wisconsin and Okl St. The difference is Syracuse is not one of those teams. We will not make deep tournament runs (BE or Big Dance) if we consistently miss the front ends of 1 and 1’s. It truly does frustrate me. If I was Coach Dixon, I would start devoting a lot of practice time to shooting FT’s. This team has enough talent and depth to cover other mistakes, but missing FT’s when the game is on the line, especially the front end of a 1 and 1, will not cut it at tournament time.

Comment by Frank 01.05.07 @ 12:37 pm

We didn’t miss the front end of any one and one’s yesterday. None. Only two players shot one and ones, Ramon and Fields. Ramon made both and Fields made the first and missed the second.

If you saw the same team that played against Wisconsin you are crazy. Pitt played much better defense last night. Look at the stats. Tucker went for 32 against pitt on something like 11-17 and Nichols (who averaged 26 his past 5 games) scored 11 on 4-15. Not even close to the same production. Pitt was much better last night than at Wisconsin.

Comment by Omar 01.05.07 @ 12:58 pm

i actually think we played a better full game against ok st. then we did against cuse…..so we lost to them in 2 ot’s on the road….in the tournies a game like that goes either way, and ok st. will be a top team come tourney time….we werent ready for the wisconsin game, but maybe, since we actually played a couple of good teams in december, (and we play washington in feb) we will be ready come tourney time……..

Comment by Schoe 01.05.07 @ 1:07 pm

It is an intriguing thought about not having Gray and Kendall playing together. It is a valid point that they are not the quickest players down low.

I would like to see them switch Kendall to back-up center on a more consistant basis.

Comment by Kenny 01.05.07 @ 2:42 pm

Our defense and rebounding was awful against Oklahoma State. We fouled them on way too many shots. I think they were in the bonus with something like 10 minutes left in the second half. You aren’t going to win alot of games when the opponent is shooting free throws on every foul with 10 minutes to go. We did a much better job playing defense without fouling last night. Perhaps this has something to do with Big East refs or Pitt learned something from the two losses. I think it is a little bit of both.
