Looking Back

ESPN.com has conference reviews, Joe Starkey handles the Big East.

Biggest Disappointment

Pittsburgh

The Panthers garnered some preseason votes in both polls and were picked to finish third in the conference but lost their final five games — their first five-game Big East losing streak since 1998 — to finish 6-6 and mired in sixth place. Some key injuries on the defensive line set the stage for the season-ending collapse. Pitt’s final three opponents (UConn, West Virginia, Louisville) combined for 139 points and 1,621 yards. West Virginia’s home loss to USF also could qualify in this category. It was a season-killer.

Yeah, Pitt was an easy consensus. In the individual capsules (Insider subs.) I was mildly surprised he even mentioned Paul Rhoads.

Shortly after the regular-season finale, second-year coach Dave Wannstedt fired linebacker coach Curtis Bray and strength and conditioning coach Mike Kent but surprised many by retaining defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads. The Panthers finished 87th in Division I-A in total defense.

Capsules are tough, because you are trying to summarize everything past and going forward in too short a space. Still that, was begging for more. Instead, that was the extent of commentary on the defense. In looking back and forward you get this.

Biggest disappointment: The freshman class was supposed to have some major contributors, but players such as receiver/tailback Dorin Dickerson, tight end Nate Byham, tailback Kevin Collier and safety Elijah Fields would have been better off redshirting. Dickerson was hobbled early in the season and Fields didn’t catch on to the defense fast enough.

What’s next: As the pressure rises, Wannstedt is going to have to break in a new quarterback to replace Palko. The three major competitors will be highly touted freshman Pat Bostick, junior Bill Stull and redshirt freshman Kevan Smith. Whoever emerges should have an outstanding corps of receivers, led by Derek Kinder (57 catches, six touchdowns) and Oderick Turner (44 catches, eight touchdowns).

The implication by linking Byham and Collier with the other two, is that they too had struggles that kept them from contributing. Not simply a failure to use them. Something that isn’t actually clear from this past season — especially Byham. If you want to use the heralded freshmen as the “biggest disappointment” rather than the run defense, then the questions on the coaches only increases.
The pressure is going to be on seeing the defense improve. That more then anything else, it is what will be watched closely. It’s what has failed miserably. It is supposed to be Wannstedt’s strength. It’s where he has resisted any coaching changes other then tossing over Bray since coming into the job.

I said very early on that plaing guys like Dickerson would only waste their red shirts and sure enough we did it! Another great move in a disappointing season. I actually think we will have a worse record next year. I dont see the defense improving and losing Palko will certainly hurt, along with Blades and Revis. Not to mention the fact that the Big East is becoming a very strong conference top to bottom. I dont think there are any gimme’s on the BE schedule anymore. Can we play the Citadel for every non-con game?

Football, shmootball, fuhgetaboutit. Hoops is our sport, always was, always will be.

Losing Palko is tough, but I think it will be more for his leadership efforts than his actual QB play.

Every year some players rise up and surprise us fans by being much more productive than we all thought they would be – like Oderick Turner and Joe Thomas of 2006. We have some excellent talent coming down the pike, and one who just might surprise is Bill Stull – he has all the tools, an excellent HS pedigree (first WPIAL player to pass for 3000+ yards in a season), and will probably be better protected than Palko was. I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes close to matching Palko’s stats next year.

Revis hasn’t gone yet – but probably will, and hopefully we won’t need another MLB that gets a million tackles because the D line can’t stop anyone. But again, we have some kids that can rise up and perform as well, or almost as well, as those two did.

My point… every year good players graduate or leave college programs. It does not create an unfillable void. So, don’t get too pessimistic before the season actually starts and the team plays a few games.

Comment by Reed 12.13.06 @ 10:17 am

Im not as pessimistic about the players as much as I am the coaches. After this year, I dont know what to think. DW giving Rhoads another chance is inexplainable. He also burned several red shirts all for nothing…very Paternoesque.

Comment by Rex 12.13.06 @ 10:22 am

Well that’s a good point Rex – and I don’t know what to think either. But, I have to keep reminding myself that DW has been pretty consistent on his vision of what he wants to put out on the field (to the point of driving us mad) in terms of systems and schemes- and he seems to be recruiting to fit that. So, maybe it will come together next season.

As an exercise I looked up some players…

Just for argument’s sake – here are the seniors that saw any real amount of playing time last year:

Palko QB
Blades MLB
Buches TE
Botts DE
Sallett DE
Sessions OLB
Simionitis OL
Villiani OL

So, aside from Palko and Blades, I think that each of these other seniors will not be too sorely missed, and that we will actually see upgrades in their replacements.

The problem is losing Revis. The secondary goes from bad to abysmal without him. Hopefully our safeties improve dramatically. Did anyone else notice how bad our defense was after Eric Thatcher got hurt? He had a really big impact on the defense (a couple of huge hits early in the Cincinnati and Toledo games that sent a message) and I hope he recovers and has big year with Fields as the other safety.

Comment by Omar 12.13.06 @ 10:40 am

i’ll be honest with you, i think wanny’s move of pauly to the lb’s was a demotion. he’s taking the guy out of his comfort zone, setting him up to fail. next year when the D gives up 984 yards rushing to slaton/white, he can drop his ass without any question. just a thought.

Comment by Harrison B. 12.13.06 @ 11:06 am

Thatcher was pretty impressive when he was in there, but I can’t figure out how his career has progressed at PITT. I looked up the last few years recruiting classes at PITT and I think he was recruited in 2002, but somehow was a soph. last year. Must have been hurt or ineligible for a few years.

We might actually have more athletic & talented personnel in the D backfield next year especially if Fields can come around.

I asked a question on the other Blog as to whether DW should put the most talented players – regardless of age and experience – on the field and let the wins/losses come as they may, or should he take each game individually and try for a winning record regardless of getting the young talent gameday experience. (Basically, play for 2007 or 2008?)

What do you think?

Comment by Reed 12.13.06 @ 11:08 am

I have no problem with ditching the strength coach – look at how our lines were man-handled all year. Bray seemed to be pretty good, though – and the only bright spots the last few years have been the LBs (at least when they were seniors).

Comment by Patrick 12.13.06 @ 11:14 am

I think every coach should just put the best players on the field from the start. If we lose a few games at the beginning because of inexperience, then so be it. As long as we are a better team in November than we were in September I will be pleased. However, a losing record will be unacceptable in my opinion.

I agree with you that Stull will be better than people think and the offensive line will be better too. I think we should be able to score points next year. The coaching has been suspect and I don’t want to hear Wannstedt complaining about talent anymore. That is bad leadership, you shouldn’t insult your players publically. Dixon would never do that. No matter how badly a player screws up, Dixon always has their back in the press.

Comment by Omar 12.13.06 @ 11:32 am

Hey Steve, how many NCAA championships has Pitt won on the hardwood….thought so….so you can stick it about your comment how Pitt is a basketball only school…to be quite honest i’m impressed with our basketball program, but in reality I could care less, football is king in SW PA and not bb.

Comment by Marco 12.13.06 @ 11:40 am

Basketball is my favorite sport. Football is great and I’m glad we have a program that is competitive, but I think basketball is the future at Pitt. The administration feels the same way. That is why they tore down Pitt stadium and built a state of the art basketball facility on campus and football has to play in the piece of shit that is Heinz Field.

Comment by Omar 12.13.06 @ 12:04 pm

Omar, we will be fine with Aaron Berry after Revis goes. He can’t match Revis’s leadership or decsion making skills yet, that will come with some game experience. But from the standpoint of pure coverage ability, there is not a big drop off between Revis and Berry. That’s not a knock on Revis, Berry is very talented. Berry will be a dominant corner by the end of next season with throws to his side few and far between by the following season. I do agree with your overall statement that the secondary was bad this year. It was just overshadowed by our horrible run defense. One can only hope that the fresh perspective brought by a new secondary coach will improve the overall play of the secondary.

Comment by Frank 12.13.06 @ 1:02 pm

I got an incomplete in Masochism 80 Maybe that explains it.

Comment by steve 12.13.06 @ 1:14 pm

Frank, I hope you are right. Those kids really didn’t get to play much. I saw Chappel out there a few times, but I can’t remember seeing anyone else. The safeties were just awful this past year. It was embarrasing to see those guys in a Pitt uniform. I will miss watching Revis play, even though he laid a huge egg in his last game.

Comment by Omar 12.13.06 @ 1:38 pm

Our one gigantic weakness is our D and I dont see that improving at all next year, in fact it could even get worse.

Comment by Rex 12.13.06 @ 1:42 pm

Not sure the D could get much worse – but just remember the majority of the D players will be a year older and so should have improved. Webster or Nix might rise to the occasion at MLB, Berry and Fields could be great – any number of things could happen.

Comment by Reed 12.13.06 @ 4:57 pm

Omar, just re-read this string of posts, and I wonder if you and I have the same take on DW’s complaining about a lack of talent. At first glance I was pretty surprised to read the quotes of him saying that, but as I went back and re-read them (or listened to his press conferences) I’m convinced that those statements need to be taken in context. I believe he meant that he didn’t have the talent to accomplish what wants to have happen on the field – in terms of schemes and strategy (which still might point to your comment of the coaching being suspect). I really don’t think he meant to critize the actual players for not being talented enough. At least I hope so – my take could be wrong.
