A Couple LB Commits

Yes, as earlier noted in comments in the prior post, Brandon Lindsey committed to Pitt from da ‘Quip. Pitt beat out WVU, BC and Michigan State for his services. He is expected to play OLB at Pitt. Scout.com ranks him as a 4-star and 10th best recruit for SLB. Rivals.com puts him at 3-star and #34 at the OLB. They also put him as the 14th best prospect in Pennsylvania (the Pantherlair ranking isn’t too different at #13).

Pitt also received another linebacker commit. Tristan Roberts out of Pennridge in Perkasie, PA (Eastern side 35 miles north of Philly). Roberts is a 2-star by both services, otherwise unranked recruit with some speed at the weakside linebacker spot. Roberts was part of the group visiting Pitt this weekend along with Lindsey and Maurice Williams. I’m guessing the speed he posessed interested Pitt. His only other actual offer to this point was from Bowling Green. UConn, UNC and Rutgers had some interest but no actual offers.

Update: This article on HS football in suburban Philly notes in passing that Tristan Roberts “was a one-man wrecking crew,” for Pennridge. Of course, Roberts was also playing running back as well, so it’s hard to say which side of the ball they are referring.

yes but we have PAUL RHOADES!!!

this team still sucks!!!!!! DW can’t coach!

Lindsey also had an offer from Ohio St., which Mike Blue and White failed to mention in the PG.

Don’t worry about Rhoades, Alabama will steal him from us. They love the bend but don’t break mentality in the SEC.

Apparently Rivals factored in who Pitt has coaching linebackers and Scout did not.

Tristan Roberts is the nephew of former Pitt great Tim Lewis. The last time Pitt signed the nephew of one its’ former All-Americans it worked out pretty well…Darelle Revis is the nephew of Sean Gilbert.

PITT also got a commit from a NJ RB – I think his name is Sharif Harris, and he’s 6’2″ 220 lbs with speed ( I could be a bit off on the particulars).

It sounds like this is was good weekend for PITT recruiting, and that DW is filling his perceived needs with these guys.

At least it’s showing that this last season’s late swoon hasn’t scared away quality players from considering, and in some cases, committing to PITT. There’s a few more excellent prospects uncommitted and I have to think we have at least a decent shot at them.

Im not too surpised that most recruits arent being scared away. Pitt is a place where young guys can play and they do have a good track record of sending guys to the pros. If there is one edge that DW has, thats it. However if you are looking to win a national title Pitt is not the place to go. At least not anytime in the near future.

I wonder how many recruits (and their parents) look at chances for a national championship as a deciding factor. I agree with you that the opportunity to play and maybe go up another level means more. And, I think that non-football factors probably weigh heavily and that’s where DW’s ability to sell himself as someone who will look after the kid figures in, as well as PITT’s reputation as an excellent academic institution.

Which gets me thinking – has PITT had any off the field problems with thier players in the last two years? – other than a few minor suspensions (Del Sardo and Strong come to mind). If not, that’s a pretty good track record in this day and age.

The last major incident I remember was Del Sardo although I still dont think all of the details of his problems have come out. Also, I think Rod Rutherford was involved in some altercation at a night club in 2003 I think.

Shelly Anderson from the Post Gazette recently did a column on Antonio Bryant, seems like hes always had some discipline issues.

Yes, but really PITT has been relatively quiet in the problem area over the last two years – I think DW’s approach has something to do with that.
