Sorry to be late. Lots of work to do today.

Not a great showing in the first half. Down 42-35. Buffalo is hot. Really hot. The Pitt offense got off to a horrible start. Down by 11 several times. It also sounds as if the defense was quite shaky (to be kind). Mike Cook seems to be the one that kept Pitt in the game. Taking over for key shots and making some nice passes to the open man. Pitt got it within 5 with a few minutes left, then fell back.

Dick Groat sounds like he’s going to lose it about how bad the Pitt defense is playing in a 2-3 zone. Pitt got out of it shortly before the half. Didn’t seem to make that much of a difference.

Let’s see what happens in the second half.
FINAL UPDATE: Okay. 70-67 Pitt wins on a comeback.
As Dave in Orlando pointed out, Pitt has to know every team is going to come at them with the best shot.

Buffalo was a good team that really wanted it. Pitt made a slow steady comeback. Not a flurry or an extended run. Just a slow steady climb out of the hole they dug for themselves.

This is a good win, as long as Pitt realizes they just cannot take any team lightly. They have a week off to get ready for Wisconsin (oh, and take finals).

The way the game is going, being down by 7 at halftime sounds like a good deal. Kendall needs to step up and we need Ramon and another guard to get hot, I dont care who but Benjamin could be that guy if they are busy guarding fields and ramon. I am not watching the game but tracking it so I am not sure what the breakdown so far is. How are we doing rebounding?

Comment by Panthoor 12.09.06 @ 4:53 pm

Rebounding – not happening. Buffalo isn’t missing and when they are missing it’s a long shot with a long rebound to them. Stat just on TV: second chance points. Pitt – 1. Buffalo – 7.

This game is a great example of why the NCAA Tournament can be a total crapshoot at times.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 12.09.06 @ 5:15 pm

WORRIED? Yes I am. They need to start to step it up. The time for taking it easy is over.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 12.09.06 @ 5:26 pm

8 minutes left. Second chance points: Pitt 3, Buffalo 12

Comment by Kevin 12.09.06 @ 5:31 pm

What’s up with Kendall’s pseudo-mohawk? Did he get tired of the frosted tips?

Comment by Matt 12.09.06 @ 5:40 pm

Refs really are homers.

Comment by steve 12.09.06 @ 5:40 pm

Free throws could be the deciding factor for Pitt. Give credit to UB. They are really going after it.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 12.09.06 @ 5:41 pm

Just noticed that Evansville beat UB by 30. I guess that confirms that Pitt, with it’s No. 2 ranking, has a big target on its back.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 12.09.06 @ 5:49 pm

phew

Comment by steve 12.09.06 @ 5:52 pm

woooo. wow nice finish

Comment by Panthoor 12.09.06 @ 5:54 pm

10 -0 Wow, geat game and good test for the Panthers on the road in a hostile environment.

Comment by TmgPanther 12.09.06 @ 5:56 pm

They showed some heart. Great win, even though it was Buffalo. Cook is a player. Fields is great too. And Gray is Mr. Consistent this year. Nice spark off the bench from Benjamin. He hit the biggest shot of the night. Kendall played like absolute shit. He needs to get his game together in the next week.

Comment by Omar 12.09.06 @ 5:58 pm

Just watched the second half on ESPN gamecast…

… I hope this was just a combination of Pitt overlooking a mid-major team + the mid-major team being fired up to play a top team and playing WAY out of their mind + a bit of home court advantage for Buffalo.

Because if this close game is not an aberration (and I do think it was an abberation), we’re screwed against Wisconsin.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 12.09.06 @ 5:58 pm

The way it played out it was a trap game. This can only help though..next three games are brutal but even if we go 2-1 this comming stretch we are in good shape for Big East time.

Comment by Panthoor 12.09.06 @ 6:01 pm

Mike Gottfried is drunk.

Comment by steve 12.09.06 @ 6:03 pm

Defensive rebounding has been a huge problem. That is the only reason the game was close. Hopefully, Young can get healthy and help.

Comment by Omar 12.09.06 @ 6:06 pm

Hey what kind of shot did Benjamin hit?

Comment by Kenny 12.09.06 @ 6:08 pm

Huge three to cut the lead to one.

Sorry he cut the lead to five and then hit a lay-up on the next possesion to cut the lead to three. Big baskets that were very timely.

Comment by Omar 12.09.06 @ 6:13 pm

Teams seem to be pulling AG out from under the basket when they need a shot and a rebound that was working tonight for Buffalo. The Panther need to start games like they played the second half tonight. It’s like they aren’t taking these teams seriously. They seem to think that the other teams will lay down for them. That won’t happen in the next three games and they need to play the entire game instead of trying to coast for periods of time. We are deep enough that these guys should be at full throttle all time.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 12.09.06 @ 6:15 pm

Thanks O, can’t get the game down South. Had to sit and watch updates on the computer.

Comment by Kenny 12.09.06 @ 6:16 pm

I have never seen a team (Buffalo) make more shots that should never even come close to going in… They got every bounce possible. We looked good in the final 15 minutes of the game but that won’t cut it against Wisc, OKState, or the majority of the Big East. PITT being #2 means that every team is gunning for us and we are going to get everybodys A game. I’ll take the win and hopefully we can continue to look as balanced as we did in the final 15 minutes.

Comment by Scott 12.09.06 @ 6:24 pm

Was Dixon coaching his butt off in this game?

Comment by Kenny 12.09.06 @ 6:26 pm

I guarantee we come out more fired up for the next two games. Buffalo started out hitting every shot, there wasn’t much we could do. It was so frustrating that we went to a zone for a few possesions. It didn’t help that they got so many second chances. I am not worried about our intensity against Wisconsin or Oklahoma St. Not too many teams have two solid road wins on their resume. It would have been a disaster if we lost, but we didn’t. This win showed some character, which will be important later in the season.

Comment by Omar 12.09.06 @ 6:35 pm

I read on the “Pride of the Pete” board where a UB fan gave credit to Dixon for changing up the interior D in the latter part of the second half.

Comment by Kenny 12.09.06 @ 6:38 pm

Dixon did a nice job settling the team down and getting them to run some very nice set plays in the second half. We isolated Cook in the post on a couple of plays which was a brilliant move, since they fouled him on each one. The move to zone was effective but we didn’t take advantage on the offensive end. Dixon definitely should get a lot of credit for this win, he made some good decisions with personel and with his play calling.

Comment by Omar 12.09.06 @ 6:38 pm

Defensively he put Kendall on their big man instead of Gray. The biggest thing was better rebounding from the players down the stretch.

Comment by Omar 12.09.06 @ 6:41 pm

Cool!!! I really like him as a coach. He has gotten better each year. I went for a run at halftime and while I was running the thought came to mind that JD was going to have to out-coach UB in the second half.

Comment by Kenny 12.09.06 @ 6:45 pm

Hopefully the game was shown in the Rochester/Syracuse area. Good kids up there and it would be good exposure for them to see us come back like that. They would have also seen Dixon coach them to a win like this and know that he has their backs. Recruiting has to be a big part of scheduling a game in Buffalo. Paul Harris is a good example, the kid is amazing.

Comment by Panthoor 12.09.06 @ 6:49 pm

I went to see Apocolypto….I’m glad I did from reading these entries….the movie is great…extremely bloody, but worth it….sort of like watching this Pitt team play…go Pitt!

Comment by Marco 12.09.06 @ 10:35 pm

What a scary game that was.

One thing that really scares me – while Gray did play 32 minutes, there was a key possession near the end of the game where he was inexcusably out. Pitt had the ball and was up by maybe like 2-3 points and Dixon had Gray on the bench. Granted, Cook got into the post and got to the line and Gray was back in the next possession, but if you’re Dixon, you’ve got to have him in every trip down the floor in that case. There was about three minutes left and maybe Dixon just got caught with his pants down if he had Gray resting. But in my opinion, that’s something that can’t happen. Even if he had called a timeout just to get him in the game, I think that’s a wise decision.

This Pitt team is really tough to beat, but as someone pointed out earlier, it was the perfect snapshot of the NCAA tournament where you can lose any given game in a hostile environment.

Comment by PittHoops 12.09.06 @ 10:48 pm

That is why we scheduled the game. Wins like this prepare you for the tournament. It was a great effort down the stretch with some really nice offensive sets. I am looking forward to next weeks game. It stinks that we have to wait until Saturday for the Wisconsin matchup.

Comment by Omar 12.09.06 @ 11:12 pm

At least we don’t have to go into the long break with a loss on our minds.
