SI On Campus has a feature called “Monday Awards.” A look back at the past week in college games. One of the new features is a basketball “power poll.” For top-10 teams they give the partisan blogger for that school a chance to comment about the past week. Despite not quite getting the my name right, I got to summarize Pitt who was slotted at #2.

Sounds like the rich kids didn’t like a disiplinarian as coach. That’s too bad for Walt. Any coach would suck at Stanford, especially given all the injuries his team had. They didn’t give him much of a chance. The next coach will suck too.

Tribune review referenced the article about Walt Harris’ departure from PITT in 2004. Interesting to look back. Surprising thing is that he beat out Norm Chow (formerly of USC) for the head coaching job at Stanford. Also, the AD that hired Walt Harris is no longer at Stanford. I think that might have had something to do with his firing so quickly.
I wasnt a Walt Harris fan but I hope that he lands on his feet.

Several interesting remarks from the article:
Harris was a disciplinarian who clashed with some players, including linebacker Michael Okwo, who briefly quit the team in November. Players complained of a communication gap with the coaching staff.
“It was maybe just a bad fit,” receiver Mark Bradford said. “Maybe we didn’t respond to the way that was his style of coaching. His style of coaching probably would have worked in a lot of other places. It didn’t work here.”
