Dodging a Blow

Remember when Pitt made a run for Luis Colon out of Miami? Instead his AAU coach steered him to his good buddy Bob Huggins. Guess, we know why. He fit the system there a little better.

Kansas State freshman basketball player Luis Colon received an automatic one-game suspension for throwing a punch Wednesday in a game against California in Berkeley, Calif.

The suspension is Big12-mandated. So Colon, who is 6-10, won’t play Saturday when the Wildcats play against Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo. Colon was ejected with 6 minutes, 39 seconds left in K-State’s 78-48 loss. He threw the punch at Golden Bears’ 6-10 freshman Taylor Harrison.

“Luis actions last night are inexcusable and will not be tolerated,” K-State coach Bob Huggins said in a prepared statement. “This is a tough game, and you have to be mature and maintain your emotions. Luis understands that he made a mistake and there are consequences for his actions. This cannot happen again.”

If it does happen again, the Big 12 has him done for the season.

Huggy-bear made Colon go the Cal lockerroom after the game and apologize directly. K-State lost the game 74-48

Chas,

Being a Pitt grad and living in Cincinnati, I have followed UC basketball, I must say UC was smart in dumping Huggy, frankly, he is a scum-bag. K-State was hard up and hired him for a quick fix, we will see how long the administration of K-State can put up with the antics of future felons and thugs.

The sad thing is, no one is surprised by these stories at all anymore. I’m sure Bobby and K-State are proud, way to go!

Huggins is sleazy. Although, I do appreciate the comic relief. Remember when the Bearcats’ Art Long punched the police horse?

Disclaimer: I usually do not endorse harmful behavior directed at animals, but that made me chuckle.

I found it funny that Bob Huggins had a prepared statement. Did someone write the apology for him? Could he not say that statement without it written out in front of him. Or did he just go to the apology filing cabinet for that one. Lets see, “Drunk Driving, No. Player beats Girlfriend file, No. Player busted for drugs, Not that one, Player punches other player, There it is. Great. Tell them I will be at the press conference in a second.”

As interesting to read about as this is – how refreshing that PITT seems to be above this stuff when it comes to the their sports programs. Both Dixon (and DW in football) appear to be the type of coaches that are willing to let the Ws & Ls come as they may without sacrificing the integrity of the respective programs. I noticed that Huggins didn’t impose any punishment by the head coach on the kid, other than making him do something that the kid should have wanted to do himself.

As a PITT fan I appreciate this more and more, and it makes it that much easier to follow the teams without embarrassment – even in disappointing seasons.

Watched a few PITT BB games already this year – first in a long while – thanks to the passionate posts on this Blog. Have to say they look pretty solid, and I’m hoping they can stay healthy for the NCAA run. At least no one in the national media can bitch about the BE BB strength/scheduling.
