But Pitt Isn’t #1

I’m not exactly outraged or scandalized that Pitt is now ranked #2 in the AP and #3 in the Coaches. UCLA didn’t just have bigger wins this week, they had bigger televised wins. There’s no pretending that getting on TV doesn’t matter for the profile and the voters. No one got to see Pitt destroy FSU (who, before the game was supposed to be good, but on Sunday night I had the misfortune of hearing Doug Gottlieb stump for UCLA and dismiss Pitt with a “they haven’t beaten anyone,” comment. So predictable.) or any of the other teams Pitt has beaten. Not even on FullCourt for the first 6 games.
That Ohio State got the top spot in the Coaches, though, is a bit of a stumper. If the argument is that Pitt hasn’t beaten anyone, OSU is even worse. Pitt can at least claim to play a team from the ACC and A-10 to this point. The best from Ohio State is Kent St. in the MAC. Yes, OSU takes on UNC on Wednesday, but that doesn’t explain the present.

Still, it’s too early to get that worked up over this. Just slightly annoyed.

I do think it’s quite a testament to the coaching abilities of Ben Howland (and his ability to groom programs) that his current team and his former team (coached by his former assistant) are #1 and #2 in the country.

I find it interesting how the AP poll has Virginia at 25 while the Coaches have them as the last team receiving votes, and only 1 of them.

Yeah these two polls are much different in basketball then in football…

Bad news the ISU head coaching job got filled today. Looks like at least another year of Rhodes

The comment by Doug Gottlieb is so typical of him.
He routinly makes these comments concerning Big East Teams. Since he got kicked out of Notre Dame he has an anti BE bias. Just was his comments throught out the Year.

Andy Katz sez

“The Buckeyes are 6-0 by beating VMI, Loyola-Chicago, Kent State, Eastern Kentucky, San Francisco and Youngstown State. How can that compare to UCLA winning the Maui Invitational with wins over Kentucky and Georgia Tech, let alone a win at home over BYU? Or, how about Pitt, which did have a neutral-site win over Western Michigan, but most recently obliterated Florida State at home? Seriously, do the coaches who vote in this poll really believe that Ohio State is better than UCLA and Pitt at this juncture?”

With the teams they beat at Maui and their getting to the Final last year, UCLA deserves to be #1. OSU coming in at #1 in the Coaches is absurd to say the least.Who have they beat and where did they finish last season?????

It would be nice for Pitt to get to #1 sometime this season but it would be better yet for them to be on top of the NCAA hoops world at seasons end!

Finally, you guys get a test of the hell that I live in, Columbus, OH. OSU, OSU crammed down your throat. I thought great basketball is starting I wont have to hear about OSU, it will be Pitt they will be ranked high. Then wham blindsided by the fricken sothesayers and pundits. Guess I just continue to grin and bare it. Absurdity.
