I swear, there are days when I think stories like this are planted just to give me hope.
The future prospects of Dan McCarney remaining the football coach at Iowa State beyond Thanksgiving grow more bleak by the week. For some folks the die is already cast, although for others Mac still has their support because of his past exploits…
…
Pollard has repeatedly passed on opportunities to give Mac, who we shouldn’t forget was just named the Big 12 Coach of the Year three seasons ago, a vote of confidence as of late. Conventional wisdom amongst the media and fans is that Pollard has already made his decision, and I count myself in that camp. It’s gotten to the point that folks are even speculating on prospective names for replacements. Two names I’ve heard bandied about already are Paul Rhoads, the defensive coordinator at Pittsburgh, and Jim Harbaugh, the head coach at Division I-AA San Diego.
Rhoads is a former ISU assistant under McCarney and Ankeny native, this year’s Sporting News College Football Preview named him the best defensive coordinator in the Big East.
Go for the gusto Paul. An opportunity in Ames, Iowa doesn’t come around very often.
Did you see Randy Edsall’s comments in the Hartford paper about his recruiting difficulty being related to UCONN academics. Edsall mentions that Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse can “hide” athletes in sub-par programs. Zeise touched on it breifly in his article this morning. Just was wondering the context of Edsall’s comments etc…I can’t believe that Khalid El-Amin(spelling?) is a Rhodes Scholar! Seems to me Jim Calhoun is competent enough at hiding his players in programs at UCONN!
Very good point, gameplans are about strategy and coming up with how to find a way to win. In college football talent is key but coaching that talent is paramount. Pitt has some talent but not enough right now. Pitt has a coaching staff but it needs an over-haul.
At this point in the season, depth is becoming a major issue with Pitt. Did anyone notice Chris Vangas? Is he a legit second stringer? If it isn’t a penality, its a missed assignment, I do not think all the coaching in the world can help this kid, he just doesn’t have it. Sadly, Vangas had to play saturday and he did kill 2 drives with very bad penalties.
I think this coaching staff has some problems and W must address them at the end of the season.
They have to beat UConn, 7-5 is still a reality, with a minor bowl. WVU and LVille will run all over them but hopefully Pitt can manage the game and not get blown away.
Look at how well the D line is progressing – we just need that with our linebackers and secondary. Clint just doesn’t know HOW to play.
Clint has made the same mistakes over and over and over. Need I say more…
Good call on the d-line, they have improved and take into consideration Fulmer and Williams are out due to season ending injuries.
Rhodes has to go.
It’s not much different then what we saw from the Offense last year and the last two games. For some reason Wanny is not a risk taker and will not try anything new.
I like what he has done with recuiting it’s hard not to but his gameplans are weak and as conservative as they come and only work if you have the better talent on the field.
He will never be known as a coach that get the most from his kids as he never gives them the chance to win against the kids who are just as talented or better then they are.
In order to beat more talented teams you have to role the dice once and a while, sadly Wanny keeps them in his pocket.
