Lee’s Week 9 Picks

Filed under: Football,Gambling — Lee in Altoona @ 11:06 pm

[Editior’s note: Lee’s been in conferences and lots of other things going on this week (or so he claims), so while he was able to pump out some picks, he only had time for a few.]
Screw all the zoning notices that I’m supposed to be working on right now. First things first…

* MINNESOTA (+27) AT OHIO STATE: The Buckeyes’ record against the spread over the past few years has been incredible. Nobody should call for OSU not to cover unless they’re pretty sure. But I think I am here. Twenty-seven is a lot to lay against a Minnesota team that can run the ball (remember OSU’s problems against the run?), and that gave Penn State everything it wanted and then some (pass interference?). I’ll (gulp) go against conventional wisdom here, taking the Gophers and the points.

* PENN STATE (-3) AT PURDUE: Purdue has no defense. Thus, this is a great place for the Nittany Lion offense to get healthy. Morelli still has plenty of fast receivers and, oh yeah, Tony Hunt. The Nits can definitely put up some points against this pitiful D. On the flip side, Purdue also has a hell of an offense. But, unlike the Boilermakers, the Lions have a hell of a defense. This oughta slow down Purdue’s offense long enough for Penn State to get ahead by more than a mere field goal.

And the “Stone Cold, Lead-Pipe Cinch, Guaranteed Pick of the Week”

* SYRACUSE (+6.5) AT CINCINNATI: You know, the Bearcats haven’t let me down all year long. Every time I’ve picked them, they’ve covered the spread. You gotta love former dormats that are rising from their ashes… but Vegas thinks are still doormats. Cincinnati’s tough schedule and physical play will carry them past a depleted Syracuse squad, especially in the friendly confines of Nippert Stadium. Heck, even Pitt could run on Syracuse. The Bearcats will win by at least seven.

Also, I’ll take Pitt’s defense to give up at least 150 rushing yards to the bye week.

Bye week jokes are always fresh.

Looks like Chris Taft got cut from the Golden State Warriors no thats not a type-o Golden State Warriors cut him! I didn’t even know that could even happen get cut from the Warriors. That’s like getting cut from a Division 2 team. Anyway it’s too bad he had soooo much talent if not the most definatly a top 5 in the most talented players to play for our basketball team. One of the few that didn’t reach their full potential and that’s the what makes Aaron Gray better than him, Aaron is willing and trys to get better while Chris never tried to get any better. Just very sad to hear about.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. From potential number one draft pick, to actual second round, to being cut by an NBA doormat. It would seem Taft doesn’t have a lot of options in the NBA. Back surgery finished him last year, and the Warriors cut him because his back is hurting and he couldn’t keep up in the running offense that Don Nelson installed at Golden State. Add the health issues to the long time concerns about his work ethic and it seem unlikely that any NBA teams are going to be excited about taking a chance on him in the future.

Stop and think that if Taft had not put himself in the draft as a sophomore, he might still be playing at Pitt. I felt through most of this past season that Taft’s departure was actually a plus for the panthers since it allowed Gray to develop as a better player.

I hope for the best for 99% of the guys that come out of Pitt, even if they leave early. I even route for most of them if their decision seemed questionable. However, I honestly route for failure for both Taft and Greg Lee. Perhaps I shouldn’t, but I can’t help it. They both had that combination of unrealized potential and stupidity. I can help but feel the schadenfreude. And I don’t want to hear that Greg Lee had reached his peak. He left after a down year.

I was a little surprised that Lee wasn’t drafted late..even though he dropped passes that hurt us badly. Too bad about him and Taft as well. Goes to show you that there are few agents that really care about their clients. Another example is Maurice Clarett out of Ohio State, from Heisman hopeful to jailtime. As for Lee, he didn’t have good size and his work ethic was piss poor. Taft read the internet and the papers too much during the season. Can’t wait til basketball season.

Just got back from fanfest. The team looked pretty good. Mike Cook is an excellent addition. He is the type of player that we haven’t had in the past. He can really get to the hole and is a natural scorer. He is a big kid, maybe a bit taller than he is listed, and very strong. Graves looked really good out there today. He was hitting his jump shots and penetrating to the hoop at will. Fields jump shot looked good, but he still needs to work on his conditioning. On a negative note, the guards were having a difficult time getting the ball to Gray in the post. He had to start out much farther away from the basket and missed a few jump-hooks as a result. Feeding the post is one area where we will really miss Krauser. Ramon did not play, I don’t if he is sick or injured. Young still needs to improve on offense, but he is progressing very nicely on defense. Kendall hit a three, which if he can make the shot consistently, makes us more difficult to defend. Benjamin was playing with confidence, but I think it will be difficult to get him minutes this year. The team shot free-throws very well.

All in all I left the Pete pretty impressed with the team. We have a ridiculous amount of depth and versatility. I think we will be able to push the ball a little more this year because Young, Kendall, and Cook run the floor and are excellent finishers. The guards definitely need to work on getting the ball to Gray in better position. The defense will be very good, especially if Cook can keep progressing and eventually become a lock down type of defender. Quick guards like Dominic James will still be a problem, but less so than last year. Cook gives us more size on the perimeter as well. From what I saw it looks like fans should believe the hype.

Lee 2 out of 3 not bad, how do you feel regarding Pitt vs USF next Saturday?

Comment by jimbo b 10.29.06 @ 10:45 am

Yeah i was at Fanfast yesterday and was very impressed overall at how our team played. They didn’t even look like they were having as much fun compared to just wanting to beat each other. That intensity is what makes our d so tough. mike cook looked really quick considering his size, and should be huge for our team. however, i couldn’t help but be reminded of krauser the way he took the ball to the hoop (not neccessarily a good thing). he should have the size to adjust better though and to his credit, did dish the ball away a few of the times he was met with defenders. i hope we won’t have to rely on antonio getting us 28 points a game like he dropped on our d, but he sure looked good. as a matter of fact, all of our guards were hitting from deep (perimeter d???). yeah, i agree with omar that we could have brought it inside more but i feel like the object of the scrimmage was to highlight our young guards. everybody knows about ag. aaron even looked in better shape, and had a bounce to his step running down the court that i never saw last year. all in all, this is shaping up to be a great year (or a letdown of astromical proportions)

Omar/Yi — thanks for taking time to report, very informative. appreciated.

…a bit concerned, though, by your observations about our guards having difficulty getting the ball inside to Gray. I still have high hope that Fields will pick up where Krauser left off (esp. in terms of assists). So I hope you’re right, Yi, in your feeling that “the scrimmage was to highlight our young guards.”

Great observation about the intensity. It was nice to see the team that serious and focused for a scrimmage. I’m looking forward to watching us play on Wednesday.
