New Players

A couple pieces on some verbals for Pitt’s 2007 recruiting class.

When you are a WPIAL football player who is headed to Pitt, often, the focus is on you.

That is where Thomas Jefferson senior Dom DeCicco is right now.

DeCicco has given a verbal commitment to coach Dave Wannstedt’s program and the ongoing renewal of Panthers football.

That said, DeCicco, 6 feet 3, 205 pounds, knows that the focus is on him this season when he lines up at quarterback, returns kicks, plays a little receiver and also defensive back for the Jaguars.

“You kind of feel like you have to show what you can do all the time,” DeCicco said. “You know that there are a lot of local Pitt fans interested in what you are doing and how you are playing. I think it is a little bit of you having to show those Pitt fans that you deserved the scholarship that coach Wannstedt gave you.”

DeCicco has been living up to the hype as the best player on the top ranked team in the WPIAL Class AAA rankings and the PIAA. Tomorrow, Thomas Jefferson plays Keystone Oaks. A team with two other players who have verballed to Pitt, Chris Jacobson and Myles Caragein.

By now, just about everyone who follows high school and college football closely is familiar with Chris Jacobson.

They know that he attends Keystone Oaks High School, that he gave a verbal commitment to Pitt earlier this year before other colleges could even sniff him out, and that the 6-foot-3, 290-pound guard has been invited to the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Four hundred of the game’s best high school players were nominated to play, including Keystone Oaks’ Myles Caragein. It was announced on Friday prior to KO’s game with Elizabeth Forward that Jacobson had been invited; Caragein still has a shot, according to Kamberis.

You can put absolutely no stock in this. Just a gut feeling that could be totally wrong, but I think Pitt should be getting some more recruiting announcements in the next week or so.

Hopefully they will have some prospective recruits at the Toledo game and put on a good enough showing to erase the MSU debacle in the kid’s minds.

I’d like to see some WR commits like Toney Clemons and the Williams kid from Erie, PA.

Lots of rumors about Walt Harris’ job being in question with his dismal showing at Stanford this year (0-4 and counting, continually in ESPN’s Bottom 10 lists).

This came up yesterday and it looks like DW said that Dickerson is expected to play this weekend:

NOTES — It appears freshman Dorin Dickerson will not redshirt. He has yet to be used this season, but that should change Saturday. “We’re going to play Dorin this week,” Wannstedt said. Word is that Dickerson will play running back, receiver and returner on some special teams. … Wannstedt also said freshman offensive lineman Jason Pinkston is getting closer to playing.

This is good news. The sooner we get the early game jitters out of him, the sooner he can become the offensive weapon most of think he will be.

Maybe PITT got lucky by not getting Tyler Smith.

Does anyone know about espnU? Is this a pay per view? internet broadcast? I saw that Pitt is not on gameplan but on espnu. I’ve never used this before. Any info would help. I was hoping to see the game this week.

Thanks

Should be a fun friday for Pitt. I’m a senior at Keystone Oaks and it is gonna be nice to watch a game where 3 of the best players at the game are all going to Pitt.

GO OAKS!

I echo the ESPNU question above, it certainly doesn’t appear to exist among the 4000 channels on my Comcast Digital Cable. Is the game available on ESPN360 again?

I’ve tried ESPNU and can’t seem to get it to work. So, I’m satisfied listening to the game thru the Internet on 104.7 and having the “gamecast” window from CSTV or ESPN up on the laptop screen to check stats, drives etc. You actually get more info that way – but can’t see the plays (that way I can read a book at the same time).

Guys, I’m wondering if there is more ‘behind the scenes’ drama at PITT then at other college programs. We’ve had a lot of quitting/transfers since Wanny came here; Jennings leaving, the training camp AWOLs, Del Sardo’s situation, Derron Thomas bags out, etc., and now this squib in the newspaper….

“One player who seemingly has fallen from favor with Pitt’s coaching staff is freshman wide receiver T.J. Porter, who did not play as a receiver or kick-returner against The Citadel. Wannstedt, however, said he is not in the doghouse.” Too bad because I really like Porter and think he can be a very good player for PITT, but it seems that he’s alway on the brink of something.

Admittedly, I’m just in the last two years getting back into really following PITT football, but these actions shock me. Am I worrying for nothing? Maybe someone who closely followed PITT during the Harris years can shed some light on whether this has happened in our past, or compare it to other school’s programs.

I guess a silver lining to all this is that it opens up more scholarships (I would think) for DW to get players he wants into the fold. Anyway – it’s disheartening.

If you have Adelphia in Pittsburgh you get ESPNU on channel 133.
