Unspoken Frustration

It would seem Dorin Dickerson is quite bothered that Pitt has not played him yet. And yet, there are no actual words from him.

As Pitt players headed to the tunnel at Heinz Field after Saturday’s victory over The Citadel, the body language of one told an entirely different story.Dorin Dickerson couldn’t hide the disappointment, bordering on disgust, that he didn’t play against an overmatched Division I-AA opponent.

The former West Allegheny High School star was one of the Panthers’ more heralded recruits, but he has yet to play a down in their first four games. That makes him a candidate to take a redshirt and preserve a year of eligibility.

“I was in Dorin’s shoes before, and things didn’t work out the way I wanted them to for the first two years here,” said Pitt fifth-year senior quarterback Tyler Palko, a fellow West Allegheny graduate who redshirted as a sophomore. “This is only the fourth game of his career here. He’s going to have a lot of football ahead of him.”

Dickerson is smart enough not to actually say anything, though his body language is apparently betraying him. Dickerson also has an uncle who is a former head coach at the college level. Sure it was Temple, but Ron Dickerson is probably giving him some good counsel.

I’m a bit torn at this point on playing Dickerson. It’s a third of the way through the season and it just doesn’t seem worth it to play him. The prudent thing might be to preserve his full eligibility and give the coaching staff more time to figure out how and where to play him. Something I suspect is a little more problematic than they admit. Playing him without any clear idea of what to do with him seems just as stupid.
On the other hand, there is the curiosity to see what he can do. He is a top recruited prospect and in this day and age, it just seems madness to sit him like this. Plus, if he is as good as everyone thinks he will be, then there is no guarantee he will stay for his full eligibility. Redshirting him would just mean only 2 years of Dickerson playing. He could leave after his redshirt sophomore season. The idea of leaving that kind of weapon just sitting on the pine all season for the sake of his full eligibility would be the kind of thing that makes you question whether Coach Wannstedt even understood what kind of player he had.

you gotta play these kids — esp. the ones that you “say” you’re going to. the program’s ability to recruit is wholly dependent on the coaching staff following through on their word(s). If you tell a kid he’s going to play, and he comes to your school (above multiple offers built on this principle), then you ought need play the boy.

I say play him now – we need anything we can get in the running game, and he was probably told he could contribute right away when he was recruited. If it is a matter of learning the offense, and he’s behind the curve, stick him in at HB where he’ll just have to run to daylight. FB with blocking schemes, and WR with routes may be harder to master, but his ability to rush should be used. Look, it’s hard to believe he won’t be able to get 3-4 yards a carry, which is about what we average per attempt currently.

I agree with Chas, it could end up that he would succeed well enough to leave early – or, conversely, decide he’s not getting the playing time he deserves and would want to transfer (as seems to be an option for more than one player lately).

Any truth to the PITT vs PSUcks rumor for 2009 and 2010….or is somebody just hoping not to play 1AA patsies anymore?

Zeise debunked that rumor today in the PG

Ive been thinking about Dickersons playing time and this is a tough one. My first instinct would be to redshirt him just because I dont think Pitt is has a chance at a BCS this year even with him in there. Its already coming up on Game 5. Why not save him for a few years down the road when hopefully Pitt will be competing for a BCS and who knows maybe a national title. Look at all the mistakes Joepa made over the years by not using the redshirt. Morelli being case in point. Hes already a junior and had almost no game action prior to this season.

On the other hand it seems that he may be frustrated by not playing and I am concerned that this will lead to him wanting to leave or becoming disgruntled. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I say play him now – we need all the help we can get at the RB position, and he could be the spark that helps. If it’s a matter of not wanting to use a year of eligibility, that’s counting your chickens before they are hatched. He could easily do so well he leaves early or, as said above, transfer like some other players have.

Also, I believe one of the reasons DW has recruited so well is that he has alluded to the fact that these highly recruited kids can get on the field quickly at PITT – we’ve seen some freshmen play already, but I’d hate for other HS seniors to see this and think – “well, there’s a year of my life gone without playing if I decide to go there.”

I don’t know the inside details of what goes on in redshirting decisions, but my gut says get the talent on the field – it seems that the coaching staff is too worried about someone making a mistake by being put in too early (which I can understand in the case of DBs & SSs).

I remember specific members on this blog complaining about Wannstedt burning Conredge Collin’s redshirt unnecessarily last year.

DW put him in and it didn’t have much impact on the season.(granted, Collins is no Dickorson) However, I’m confident Pitt’s trio of RB’s can handle the load right now. No need to toss another guy into the mix 5 games into the season.

Maybe DW is not playing him because he makes mistake after mistake in practice or because he is having academic issues. I don’t know these things, I’m just saying that there may be a reason he is not playing other than the redshirt.

Zeise pointed out that DD has only had one consistent good week of practice. Meanwhile the stories throughout camp indicated guys like Brooks and even Mason (while still here) were doing better. Suggests he has been too injured or not experienced enough at TB to deserve to play. Regardless, in my opinion the MSU game decided the issue. A quarter of the season gone and a loss (with the suggestion of several more to come) changed my mind — if there was ever a time to unleash DD it was in the 3rd quarter of the MSU game when the team was reeling and had lost the crowd, and DW didn’t do it (suggesting what I said in the first sentence). I do hope they have a good idea of what they are doing with DD though. Old school coaches don’t seem to know how to exploit athletes (witness how Strong has largely been wasted). Another case in point is how PSU has not capitalized on the tremendous talents of King and Williams, even after the promise they showed last year.

[…] I’ve hardly been decisive in my opinion about Dickerson and redshirting. I tepidly (and with more than a little wiggle room) thought he should get to play this season, so I don’t think it was a mistake. I do, however, want to see how they use him. Hopefully a little more than just gimmick plays and special teams. With the injury to Simonitis the redshirt also came off of Jason Pinkston. Honestly, this is the scarier prospect since Pinkston was converted in training camp to the O-line from the defense. Now he will be expected to be a key reserve for the O-line. That just speaks to the issue of injuries on the line and lack of depth. […]
