I’ve got to tell you, I thought I had calmed down. Thought I was ready for some measured critiquing, analysis and perhaps even a cogent thought or two. Dare I say, a few pearls of wisdom. Then I was looking over the comments again, thinking about what I saw, and it all went to hell. I’m still pissed and I’m in a foul mood. I’m perfectly willing to keep my ire trained on Rhoads. I take a backseat to no one in my distaste for the job he has done. I nearly lost my mind when he was very close to getting the HC job.
In a piece that lauds the performance of Drew Stanton, it is just as much an indictment of the job done by Defensive Coordinator Paul Rhoads.

The Panthers had permitted a total of only 87 rushing yards in their first two games. Michigan State had almost four times that yesterday — 335.

“I think we responded real well to a some adversity,” Stanton said of Pitt’s 10-0 lead.

We never intended to run so much option, but a team that plays a lot of man defense like they do has no one to account for the quarterback.

We just kind of adjusted to things as we went along. Our line was really doing a good job blocking, and our wide receivers did a tremendous job of blocking downfield.”

By the time the Spartans erased that 10-point Pitt lead, the physical momentum had swung so violently that the Spartans felt they could move at will.

“By the third quarter, we just felt like we could go right down the field,” Stanton said.

“There were some plays that we could have made, some throws I’d like to have over. But I kept looking over [to the sideline], and they kept calling that option, so, you know, let’s just go with it.”

[Emphasis added.]

Imagine that. Making an adjustment. Taking advantage of the defense.

The thing we used to mock Walt Harris for most, was his unwillingness and/or inability to adjust his gameplan. That trait is gallingly part of DC Rhoads. Sure, the MSU receivers were coming up small for most of the game with drops and bad routes (aside from Reed), making the option and running more important. Sure that 6’6″ WR (Trannon) was playing more like he was 5’6″. Sure, all that is true, but it just shows that the pass defense is working. Losing the game to a ground attack and and a mobile QB? That’s just crazy talk.

MSU converted 11 of 15 3d downs. That’s pathetic. Time of possession was MSU 35:38, Pitt 24:22. What makes that worse, Pitt held the ball in the 1st quarter for nearly 10 minutes. Meaning MSU held the ball for about 30 of the remaining 45 minutes of the rest of the game.

Once MSU knew it could move the offense at will on Pitt. Knew it could score points, it afforded the defense the chance to gamble. To just blitz the hell out of the Pitt offense because they knew Pitt had to score and throw the ball.

As bad as old Wanny did in the pros, he had an very very good D with the Dolphins. I was really hoping he would take over the defense. At least if he keeps recruiting well we can assume the team will get better no matter how bad the coaching is. I still remain a big Wanny fan. I think recruiting is the #1 most important aspect of college football, and our last 2 coaches sucked at it, big time. I’ve repressed those Johnny Majors II years.

Cavanaugh had some of the worst Offenses the pros have ever seen. Even in the super bowl year, his team (Ravens) was ranked last in offense. In his defense, the Ravens offense still sucks long after his departure. Yes Jamal Lewis had some good years, I know.

I don’t recall where Paul Rhodes came from. He must be from the west coast where they don’t run the ball.
In his defense, he has done some very good things with the Pitt D, all of which I will list below:

Why didn’t we adjust defensively during halftime? They scored so easily using the option in the second quarter. Did the coaches think they were going to stop using it? It was just awful to watch the last three quarters of the game. Hopefully things improve quickly or PITT might not win another game. Don’t let the offense off the hook either. We came out with the ball in the second half and a tie game and we go 3 and out on some of the dumbest play calls I have seen. Our recievers have been making big plays down the field, not on stupid screen passes. Make them stop the deep ball before you abandon it. Darrell Strong played a horrible game as well. Dropping way too many passes. And why does Palko always try to force the ball to a certain player? Last year it was Greg Lee and this year it is Strong.

Man, the negativity on this board is just killing me. Pitt won’t win another game?

I don’t understand why Michigan State is getting NO CREDIT AT ALL. They adjusted. And they aren’t some scrub team. They are a team that is a contender in the Big 11 almost EVERY YEAR. MSU is hardly an “average” team.

Everything I hear is “oh it’s Paul Rhoades fault” (and he does an awful job), or “oh, don’t let the offense off the hook” (which is true) – but MSU came out in the second quarter and decided to stop screwing around. They have some serious talent.

I wonder if when they play ND real tight next week, people will finally say that they aren’t some lousy sub-500 team.

Maybe I’m saying things that no one wants to hear, but it’s true.

Share your comments with Jeff long and Wannstedt re: Rghoads …you are right on…he’s terrible.

Paul Rhodes simply put, is not the solution for a program looking to move forward. He is part of an old regime that was pathetic. Part of Walt Harris’ problem was that the defense never showed up against the better teams (except V tech). Paul Rhodes had a decent first year at PITT and then ever since he has been mediocre. He has NEVER been able to stop the run. NEVER. He pass defense (particularly against the short crossing routes) has been absent. He insist on playing 10 yrds off the receiver.

That being said, I am surprised that Wanny didnt make adjustments.

I am still a believer in Wanny but he must realize when one person (DC Rhodes) is not qualified for the job.

TO think, he was two people removed from being the head coach during the interview process. WHoa!

I owe an apology to Jeff, you were right about the defense.

I think Rhodes is from Iowa, and I still think he has pictures on someone, thats why he keeps his job.

Strong yes had a bad game. Palko was hitting him because he was open. That’s Palko’s job. Don’t even try to blame him for yesterday. We got whipped on the other side of the ball. The entire D was hung out to dry when the coaches kept the Base D in the game against the option. But what else is new. Everyone watched the WVU game last year right.
I would love like to see Wanny run the D. I know he knows how to do that. We have not had a imposing Defense since Foge Fazio was here.

Notice above that I unknowingly managed to use the words “defense” and “Rhodes” in the same paragraph.

Anyone have any stats on the decline of Pitt D in the last 8 or so years, would love to see opp rush yards per attempt each year.

5 Dusquene bb players shot last night, WTF?

Comment by JC 09.17.06 @ 1:57 pm

Chas you have every right to still be pissed. That was an outright disaster. I know Rhodes is taking a ton of heat but what about Cavanaugh??? The offense play calling has been equally horrible. We do absolutely nothing to throw teams off balance. We run two plays, run up the middle, 5 to 10 yard pass to the sideline. Nice creative offense….what a joke. I am still pissed and probably will be for a few weeks over this one.

Comment by Rex 09.17.06 @ 3:55 pm

Palko forced at least two passes to Strong. The first one should have been intercepted. In fact, Strong was shocked that it wasn’t and that is the reason he dropped it. I’m certainly not blaming Palko for the loss, but the offense did not play well after the first quarter and neither did he. We need to regroup and get ready for the Citadel. We have to forget about the debacle that was yesterday’s game.

Comment by Omar 09.17.06 @ 4:22 pm

Anyone who’s been watching the last few yrs of Pitt football knows it’s a matter of time before a team who has a bit O line and big backs starts ramming it down Pitt’s throat. They’re just physically overmatched up front, which is why I have a hard time blaming much of yesterday on Rhoads. I blame the loss on the offense, which only chose to play one quarter of football and decided WAY too early that they had to throw every play. Pitt’s only chance to win against a team like MSU (when they’re firing on all cylinders, which they were yesterday) was to keep the ball away from Stanton, Ringer, the big back etc. etc. They didn’t do that and better, bigger athletes prevailed. Give Wannstedt & Rhoads another couple yrs to get some behemoths up front and then they’ll win some of those games, but until then criticizing a defensive coordinator is a waste of all our time.

I went to Michigan State undergrad and Pitt for grad school.. so I was on the fence for this game. One thing about the game. It wasn’t Rhoad’ Defensive Plan that caused all the MSU yardage. Drew Stanton has an unbeliveable ability to run and create. I’ve seen it the last 2 years. No defense can really stop him. I bet we will see it again next week vs. ND. The thing that does stop the MSU is their poor defense; however, Pitt couldn’t seem to move the ball like they did early.

Comment by John 09.17.06 @ 7:07 pm

MSU may be good…..but they didn’t play very well on Saturday. That is right. They had about as many dropped passes as I’ve ever seen. They had a ton of holding penalties (all of which the were easily able to overcome.) They may be good but not good enough where a 21 point loss is any sort of moral victory by any stretch.

Comment by JC 09.17.06 @ 7:49 pm

agreed pitt didn’t make any visible adjustments to stop option, but paul and wanny aren’t on the field making plays. at some point, ya gotta make a tackle! way too many missed tackles. bottom line, we got whipped, no excuses. just very disappointing. we don’t seem to be making any progress, keep losing at home to middle of the pack teams from other BCS conferences(Texas A&M, Nebraska and Michigan St.)not good.

Five Duquesne Players Injured in Shooting
One Player in Critical Condition as Gunman Sought
AP Sports
PITTSBURGH (Sept. 17) – Five Duquesne basketball players were shot on campus early Sunday, leaving at least one critically injured, after some of them tried to calm a man who apparently had been disruptive at a dance, officials said.

Obviously the team was looking past MSU to the big game against Citadel.

Maybe all the long term PITT fans and posters are correct regarding Rhodes. Here’s hoping Wanny can reach out to an innovative D specialist and convince him to come to PITT next year.
