Electioneering

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chas @ 2:52 pm

I’ve followed the Athlon Spirit contest for the last 3 years, and vote stuffing has been almost as obvious as other types. I’ve always wondered about who and how they plug certain co-eds. This year, the Cinci Scout.com site is leading a charge.

Alright Bearcat fans! Let’s help on of our own as she competes against other cheerleaders across the country in the Athlon’s “Sideline Spirit” contest. Brittany Hartigan has been selected for this contest and is now in the first round. She needs our support and the support of the Big East.

Alright Bearcat fans, now is our chance to help one of our own and it’s very easy to do. During the course of covering the Bearcats I’ve enjoyed the chance to cover the Bearcats Co-Ed Cheerleaders during many of the past football and basketball games. One of the members of this year’s squad is involved in a contest called “Sideline Spirit” sponsored by Athlon Sports.

[Emphasis added.]

Now, I just hate to see the integrity of this fine contest ruined by such cheap tactics as appealling to conference loyalty (this article seems to be popping up on other Scout.com BE team sites). Besides, looking at the participants, this one got my vote.

Judging by the pictures, the Cinci girl has nothing to support. Literally. Give me one with a pair a little further into the alphabet and maybe I’ll offer my support.

Looks like our friend Gregg Lee is going to be bagging groceries while he could have stuck around and significantly helped this Panther Team not to mention got more ass than a toilet seat. I would single out his agent and put him on the chopping block for robbing Lee of his senior season …

Arizona Cardinals – Released running back Damien Anderson, tackles Alan Reuber and Jeremy Bridges, fullbacks James Hodgins and John Bronson, linebackers Isaac Keys and Mark Brown, defensive tackle Tim Bulman, cornerbacks Justin Wyatt, Darrell Hunter and Dyshod Carter, tight end Eric Edwards, safeties Jay McCareins and Chris Harrell, wide receivers Micheal Spurlock, Todd Watkins, Greg Lee and Carlyle Holiday, defensive end Tyler King and center Shawn Lynch; placed safety Jack Brewer on injured reserve and linebacker Lance Mitchell on the waived-injured list.

TWhite – I’ll bet Coach W agrees with you. I had a rather intense email volley with Bob Smizik of the Post Gazette about this, and he said that Lee owed nothing to PITT and shouldn’t be criticized for his leaving early. I said then, and still believe, that any player that takes a scholarship does owe the university something – not to be held in bondage – but should weight what the school did for him in his decision making. Also, he had to be a fool not to listen to someone with Wanny and Cavanaugh’s Pro experience when they counseled him not to leave early after his sub-par season.

When will kids realize that a degree from a good university is also worth a lot of money – for a longer period of time, than an outside shot at the NFL’s minimum salary. Not to mention his football experience could have ended in a positive note, some to build his life onto. Now, it will have ended in “what might have beens”.

The only flaw in your college degree argument is that Pitt will always allow G. Lee to re-enroll and finish his degree.
And if Atonio Bryant or Larry Fitz don’t owe anything to Pitt, then neither does G. Lee.

As I said, I believe it should be weighed as a factor in leaving – along with a realistic view on whether they will succeed at the next level, and as you pointed out, whether they would actually return for a degree at a later date (and at their own expense – very few do).

Look, Bryant and Fitzgerald were award winning WRs whose talent was recognized across the board by the media, pro scouts and fans. Lee did not raise his game to their level, and was bamboozled by an agent hoping to get 20% of whatever Lee signed for. To me the tragedy was not Lee leaving early, it was his inability to listen to people that had real knowledge of his skills and chances at being drafted. Hence, Wanny’s irate phone call to the Lee’s agent stating “…are you happy now?”

I do hope he does well and hooks up with a team, and as a PITT fan hold no animosity toward him – but I also hope that the other kids on the team look at what happened and realize that there might not always be a big pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Well, Smizik was mentioned in all of this back-and-forth, so technically we’ve covered that area.

Your right – that dead horse has been beaten enough.

Predictions for Friday?

I’ll say 28-10 PITT.

I’ll got with 35-10, the 7 additional points coming via Revis touchdown.

A+ comment on Smizik, by the way.
