UVa-Pitt Open Thread

Okay guys, last minute thing. Ian Cohen of Sexy Results and a fellow AOL Fanhouse blogger answered 5 questions about UVa for me.

This will be the open thread to comment on the game tonight.

Driving down now…I’m in GOLD lot 2 if anyone wants some free beer and food……look for the 10 foot inflatable PITT Panther….GO PANTHERS!!!

17-3 PITT with 3:00 left in 1st half. Speed kills folks… Big Plays, good line play, almost blocked a punt.

UVA has 12 (that’s right 12 yds) on the ground so far.

Pitt has played well so far, and seems like good rotations of D line in with no drop off. revis is limping.

O Line is dominating UVA up front so far also.

Listening to the game via internet on 104.7 and have ESPN Gamecast up on the screen, so it’s a pretty good way to follow the game.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 09.02.06 @ 8:23 pm

24-10 midway thru 3rd quarter. Palko threw a pick on a poorly run route by Strong, resulted in TD at end of 1st half for UVA.

Special teams look good, Defense looks very good so far with Revis pick resulting in 19 yard return TD. Brooks at RB due to tweaked ankle on Howlings. UVA has about 15 yards rushing so far.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 09.02.06 @ 9:14 pm

Palko-Kinder 78 yd TD strike. UVAs secondary was supposed to be pretty good – so we’re doing pretty well for what we thought would be lacking – big plays.

Take away the UVA interception, and its essentially 31-6 (but back to reality), 31-13 is great at this point in the game.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 09.02.06 @ 9:30 pm

38-13 with 3:21 left. Bill Fralic just said something interesting. He stated that this game was played in a way that he hasn’t seen since he started broadcasting, that it was not the ‘smoke and mirrors’ of Harris’ teams.

Big plays both O and D, great rushing defense – forcing the UVA team to pass on every play almost, and pressure on a continual basis.

To note: almost all the big plays were by veterans; freshman played and contributed, but we didn’t have to rely on them.

This feels good!

Comment by Reed Kohberger 09.02.06 @ 10:09 pm

We gave up 56 yards on the ground – while we ran for 121. Who would have thought? Passing game looked great – only bad play was a broken pattern.

One drawback: 8 penalties for 91 yards. Could be because we were very aggressive, but I’m sure DW will address this with the team.

The team sounded fast, as opposed to last year’s team, and it sounded like it was well played in all aspects of the game, with standout play by the lines.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 09.02.06 @ 10:16 pm

Chris Long was a great first test for Otah and he fared well. Had a few penalties, but held his own for the most part. I feel really good about this OL and the team…

Watched the game at Champs and joined by a Pitt ’96 grad among a sea of Irish and PSU fans (killed my appetite but whetted my thirst). Granted it was against an anemic VA offense, the defense looked awesome. A far cry from last year, what a turnaround! Receivers are just fine and kicking game not a problem. Brooks looked like the real deal and will get better with experience.

Congrats to both the team and coaches!

HAIL TO PITT!

Comment by steve 09.02.06 @ 10:28 pm

When Otah locks onto someone, they are in trouble. McGlynn looked good, and he’s I think our biggest concern. Villani even looked alright.

D line rotation was pretty clutch and the speed on the outside was too much for the slow UVA tackles. Would’ve like to see a few more sacks, but we sacrificed sacks in the 2nd half for taking away the screen pass.

We just looked great. Big plays, but I’m not so sure we even needed them. UVA did nothing on offense. Absolutely nothing.

Comment by RWill 09.02.06 @ 11:21 pm

Tyler scared me on that little shovel for the first TD but all in all I feel we looked pretty good. Clint Session had a much better game than any game he played last year and we never got beat to the outside like last year on defense.

It was also great to see that ’76 National Championship team.

Comment by Dennis 09.02.06 @ 11:55 pm

I don’t know what to say except that I’m real psyched about this W after the ’05 Opener. And somehow, my pick 36-24 wasn’t so fantastic…but again, it was a dream I had, only a dream…and therefore, not being a know-it-all here.

Nevertheless, hate to heap it on, but as posted to panther. rants prior to game…

Considering the weather, I’m thinking more along the lines of Shane Brooks (v. C.Dokish ala Larod). We shall see, though… 12:28 PM …

I need lay it on tonight…esp. after last year’s prognostications.

hence, damnations in full, I am so F*cking Proud Of This TEAM!!!!!

HAIL PITT!

Comment by Neil 09.03.06 @ 12:05 am

I did not suprise me to see Virginia get a chunk of yards on that screen play in the second half. if any team does their homework, they will realize that Pitt still can not stop the screen pass. I was impressed by the receivers tonight as both kinder and turner looked solid. brandon masons hype in camp seemed to be right on. could be a fun year. hail to pitt

Comment by Scott 09.03.06 @ 12:12 am

Greg Lee has been released by the Cardinals. Speculation indicates he’s been too slow for this league. I wonder if he has any regrets.

Comment by Eric R 09.03.06 @ 12:55 am

Sorry, but I caught another surprising Pitt cut. The Cowboys released Petitti. He was decent last year and I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds another team.

Comment by Eric R 09.03.06 @ 12:57 am

“if any team does their homework, they will realize that Pitt still can not stop the screen pass”

Really? Because I was listening to the radio and heard Hillgrove say something to the effect of “…and the screen gets crushed!” about three times. I thinks Pitt’s made some improvement in that area.

Comment by Chris 09.03.06 @ 1:53 am

Am waiting to hear more from the fans that went to the game, but from the radio calls it really sounded like PITT had improved in almost every aspect of the game from last season.

Almost all of the yards UVA gained on the ground were short gains, and no rushing plays hurt us.

Agree with Chris above re: screen plays. The announcers on the radio made it very clear that UVA attempted 4 or 5 screen plays with one succeeding in the 4th quarter for 20 yards. All the others were either well covered or broken up.

The running game, while the stats don’t really reflect it, sounded like it was improved, and I’m speculating, but after LaRod getting gains of 17 & 19 yards in the first half, he could easily have broken off some big ones in the second half had he not been injured. Brooks sounded good though, and he might be the guy to go to in short yardage situations. I’ll bet if DW would have concentrated on running the ball last night it would have worked out well.

From Hillgrove’s calls on the radio it sounded like there was constant pressure on the QB all evening – granted no sacks, but once this team gets settled in and DW feels comfortable about turning loose the blitzes we’ll see some fireworks in that area. And, was the DL as good as it sounded like? Listening to it last night it seemed that there was marked improvement there, with good penetration & constant pressure and speed from Clemond at DE.

I’m interested to hear other’s thoughts on how DW started & played the veterans last night – and how well they responded. It sounded like the players who started last year did very well, and the guys playing for the first time really supported and contributed in a solid fashion.

Look, I’m trying not to get to optimistic after one game, but I was thinking last night that opposing coaches are going to have a hard time with game planning against PITT this year as we seem so well balanced – we’ll see, but this team is going to be exciting to watch as long as the Coach keeps them hungry and humble.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 09.03.06 @ 6:38 am

I was at the game, and Virginia found ONE offensive groove in the late 3rd quarter – the 15-20 yard dump pass over the middle to the tight end. 1st two plays each netted about 15 yards. 3rd time got 10. 4th time got 5. The D began to ADJUST to it! I was afraid because of the screen factor mentioned above, the same as Notre Dame in the opener last year, but the speed is much better at getting to it.

Comment by Kevin 09.03.06 @ 9:09 am

The announcers last night were very good I thought – homers of course, but very honest in their assessments, especially after the UVA interception and TD right before the half. They talked a lot about past team implosions once some adversity happened, and stayed on that theme thru the start of the 3rd quarter and our handling of UVA’s first three & out series. Bill Fralic said that he hadn’t seen the O Line play as well as they did last night for years (he should know good line play). They were very high on Otah also.

Have been following other Big East results and we did very well with the exception of the Orange who lost to Wake Forest (expected). Rutgers is for real in my opinion, and they have a backfield that might turn out to be one of the best in the country with the great FB Leonard and young HB Rice who went for 201 yards yesterday (after a 1200+ yard rookie season). If Louisville wins tonight this weekend will help in boosting the BE presence with the poll voters down the road – I hope.

We can’t take any teams lightly this year, the ‘lean and hungry look’ will have to be there game after game. This is where we’ll see how good of a college coach DW is.

As I listened to the game it struck me that, toward the end, I expected PITT to make the important defensive plays, as opposed to hoping they would as in the past. That’s a big difference, and as I understand one game means little in the scope of a full season, my expectations of progress, competitiveness and team play seems to have been met at this early stage.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 09.03.06 @ 11:20 am

Reed, right on regarding expectations. A twinge of concern going into the second half was squashed quickly by the defense (and a quaff of Yuengling’s as well). Feet up on the bar from that point on. What a different feeling from the recent past. This is shaping up to be a fun 9 months.

An aside: Pitt picked up another highly-rated hoops recruit this weekend, Gary McGhee of Indiana. Rated as 11th best center in the 2007 class.

Nice weekend!

Comment by steve 09.03.06 @ 11:49 am

PITT looked awesome last night. The secondary is phenomenal. Revis is the real deal, one of the best players I’ve ever seen in person. The offensive line was significantly better, as Palko had time on almost every passing play. The big plays were fun, but that first drive was something I haven’t seen from PITT in a few years. I am very excited to see how we come out next Friday.

Comment by Omar 09.03.06 @ 12:11 pm

Was in my hometown playing cards and, I can’t even believe it, but had to follow the game on a freakin’ ESPN gamecast! And had a friend texting me updates as well. From the few highlights I have seen and these descriptions, sounds like it was a great game. I know O’Connor died and all, but you’d think some of the local news stations in the ‘burgh could provide more than 3 highlights. Isn’t it bad enough that you had to have ESPNU just to see the game here?

Great start, though. I’m actually excited.

Comment by Carmen 09.03.06 @ 1:32 pm

So whats the deal with LaRod’s injury?

As a side note, I saw Aaron Gray with Orlando Antigua before the game (I was standing near the Pitt tunnel) and he looked slimmed down and more athletic. A very good sign IMO.

Comment by Dennis 09.03.06 @ 2:13 pm

It was interesting earlier in the day to be riding around Cleveland listening to the Michigan State broadcasters talking about how after two easy games, MSU faces probable problems with Notre Dame and Pitt. It was surprising, but good to hear Pitt talked about in those terms.

Comment by Mitch 09.03.06 @ 10:31 pm

MSU scares me as they are a historically a strange team. They always seem to rise up a beat a much higher ranked school (not that we are in this case) and then they either lose to a weaker team or go onto have a lousy season. I remember Lou Holtz saying that USC aside he was always the most wary of MSU because you never knew what to expect.

I don’t doubt we can beat them – I’m just concerned about staying level headed for Cincy.

Watched the Louisville game last might – they are good but definitely can be scored against – they gave up a lot of big plays for TDs.

Don’t believe the loss of Michael Bush will really hurt them – the two sub RBs that played in his place were fantastic and one was so frickin’ fast no one seemed to be able to touch him on end sweeps.

I thought I’d hear May May crow a little about PITT, but maybe he’s holding off for awhile. I am glad that Trev Alberts is gone though, he was very poor as a commentator.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 09.04.06 @ 7:14 am

Dennis – Post Gazette has this re: injury

Tailback LaRod Stephens-Howling had an ankle injury and sat out of the second half, but he is expected to play Friday at Cincinnati. No other player was injured, though several battled cramps throughout the game.

Strange, but I read about a lot of cramping in HS games up in that area also – must have been the weather somehow.
